Analysis of the policies and constraints limiting the aquaponics industry in Portugal

    Get PDF
Aquaponics is an innovative and potentially sustainable method of producing vegetables and fish, enabling local, inland fish production, and vegetable production without the need for artificial fertilization. With the aim to analyze the potential development of commercial aquaponics in Portugal, a group of Portuguese stakeholders and experts were interviewed to capture their understanding of the challenges faced by the emerging Portuguese aquaponics sector. The paper evaluates and discusses the main issues experienced by stakeholders, proposing solutions to overcome barriers and restrictions. Legal and administrative barriers were identified, and it is recognized that aquaponics requires its own legal and administrative framework. Bureaucracy is duplicated in licensing processes, authorizations for sale, and permits. Exotic fish species, such as tilapia (Tilapia spp.) face legal barriers to their use in aquaculture. The freshwater aquaculture species to consider for integration into aquaponics systems are largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), pikeperch (Sander lucioperca), and eel (Anguilla anguilla). To address barriers to the organic certification of aquaponics products, producers need to collaborate and establish their own certification schemes.0F1A-358B-43B5 | Fernando Jorge Ribeiro da MataN/

The following project was carried out as part of the second year of the Master's degree in Food Engineering at the Municipality of Esposende. A healthy and balanced diet is essential for maintaining health and preventing numerous diseases prevalent in today society. However, quality food must be not only nutritionally balanced but also safe in terms of hygiene and food safety. Ensuring food safety is crucial in school canteens, as it guarantees that food will not harm consumers during its preparation and/or consumption. Therefore, continuous monitoring is imperative, which requires the verification/inspection of the school canteens operation and the entities that provide the Municipal schools with meal services. During the internship, 30 canteens in the Municipality of Esposende were visited, of which 16 have their own preparation facilities, and 14 only receive pre-prepared meals. The purpose of these visits was to analyze hygiene and food safety conditions, from the menu provided in the school canteens to the preparation and distribution of meals. To assist in this analysis, a checklist (based on Regulation (EC) No 852/2004) organized into 16 evaluation domains, each consisting of several parameters, totaling 233, was used. Hygiene and Food Safety (HFS) audits were conducted for the canteens and meal transportation, allowing observation of the facilities, work practices, and behaviors. Subsequently, the work included preparing individual HFS reports for each canteen, personalized training, among other activities. The overall Food Safety Index of the canteens was 96.15%, indicating that the canteens in the Municipality of Esposende generally comply with the required food safety standards. In conclusion, the Municipality of Esposende has an adequate quality and food safety monitoring system. Every year, objectives and goals are established to enhance continuous improvement and motivation to comply with the system

Modeling cork yield, thickness, price, and gross income in the portuguese cork oak montado

    No full text
The cork oak (Quercus suber L.) woodlands, known as montados in Portugal, hold significant economic, cultural, social, and environmental value. They are found in the Mediterranean Sea basin, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula, and sustain various activities like silvopastoralism, with cork being a primary product. Despite its economic significance, challenges such as climate change threaten its sustainability. This study aimed to analyze the edaphoclimatic variables affecting cork yield, thickness, price, and gross income in the Alentejo region of Portugal. A total of 35 farmers were selected for the data collection included in this study. Multivariable linear regressions were performed to establish relationships between cork yield, thickness, price, and gross income as dependent variables, various edaphoclimatic factors, and tree densities. A higher tree density correlates with an increased cork yield but a decreased cork thickness. Soil pH affects cork yield and thickness, with a lower pH favoring higher cork yields but thinner cork. A higher clay and silt content in horizon soil C enhances cork thickness and raises the price but reduces the cork yield. Higher accumulated precipitation and temperatures contribute to higher yields and thicknesses of cork. It is concluded that the relationships between the dependent and the independent variables are complex but partially explainable. Understanding these relationships is paramount to ensure sustainable management practices are adopted that are capable of addressing issues raised in the current context of climate change.0F1A-358B-43B5 | Fernando Jorge Ribeiro da Matainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Nature sports have a wide range of activities. However, this project focuses on the realisation of nature trails with a cultural slant, aimed at the target public who practise accessible sports. "Freedom allows us to create authentic experiences tailored to each individual. Sport is a form of freedom, nature allows those who pass through it to be free." Nelson Mandela proclaimed. Nature is a heritage that is constantly changing due to weather conditions such as rain, snow, drought and landslides. In terms of fauna, nature serves as food and shelter, as well as changes caused by man, through the clearing of forest areas and fires, which alter the landscape. The PNPG brings together a range of services and offers, including support and information points, the gates to the Park, hotel and restaurant services and a variety of nature-related activities, such as the GR50. The GR50 is a mountain walking route, approximately 200 kilometres long, covering the entire PNPG area and five municipalities in the Alto Minho and Trás-os-Montes áreas. The PNPG does not have high mountains, but the different variations in altitude mean that the mountains have minimum and maximum heights, with differences between 60 and 1545 metres, making the degree of difficulty different, thus making the routes more difficult, because apart from this issue, as it is a natural, preserved environment, it is not possible to alter its physiognomy. (ICNF) The "Nature and Culture without Limits" project has two strands, the first of which is aimed at assessing the GR50 of the PNPG and creating conditions and mechanisms that enable greater autonomy for people with disabilities

A SWOT analysis of organizations in the agri-food chain sector from the northern region of Portugal using the PESTEL and MEETHS frameworks

    No full text
Research on modern agri-food chains aims to enhance flexibility by analyzing supply chain aspects to identify improvement opportunities. A SWOT analysis of 39 agri-food sector organizations using a SWOT analysis organized using the PESTEL and MEETHS categories was conducted to evaluate the stakeholders’ needs in this sector of activity in Northern Portugal. Logistic regressions were used to compute inferential statistics, which were complemented with a qualitative analysis. Cooperatives and primary sector companies often claim superior product quality without clear evidence, while corporations integrated into competitive national markets, like those with smoked products, adapt better to dietary trends. Small- and medium-sized enterprises struggle with competitive wages, leading to high turnover and difficulty retaining skilled workers. High costs hinder many organizations, particularly cooperatives, from adopting modern communication technologies affecting competitiveness. Challenges include identifying market opportunities and managing global competition for raw materials, like wild fish. Fishing and meat sectors depend heavily on modern distribution and are dominated by large retailers. Low labor costs boost competitiveness but reflect the struggle to add value. Larger organizations are more optimistic though many face challenges with the cost and volatility of key products, like pork and milk. This study offers the following key recommendations: invest in technology and innovation while balancing short-term gains with long-term sustainability; strengthen strategic planning and collaboration among corporations, cooperatives, associations, and academic institutions; and adapt to regulatory changes, invest in market and technological capabilities, and address resource limitations. Research and collaboration with policymakers and academic institutions will support tailored solutions, enabling the sector to anticipate challenges and capitalize on opportunities

Hip muscle strength ratios predicting groin injury in male soccer players using machine learning and multivariate analysis — a prospective cohort study

    Get PDF
Despite ongoing efforts, the relationship between groin strength and injury remains unclear. The challenge of accurately predicting injuries presents an opportunity for researchers to develop prevention strategies to reduce the occurrence of such injuries. Consequently, this issue requires further investigation to obtain insights into effective mitigation strategies. In 120 male soccer players, the maximum isometric strength of the hip muscle groups was measured, and the strength ratios were calculated. Previous injury and anthropometric data were registered. Injury data were collected following the FIFA/UEFA consensus. k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) was used to predict the incidence of injury, while the significant predictive variables of the k-NN algorithm were fitted into a multivariate logistic regression model (LR) to analyze the likelihood of players sustaining a groin injury. The LR model determined two variables as significant predictors of groin injury. Players were less likely to sustain a groin injury by 76% for each decrease of the adductor/abductor isometric strength ratio in the non-dominant limb (OR = 0.238, CI 95% = [(0.098–0.572]). Players with a history of previous injury had a 67% greater risk of sustaining an injury (OR = 0.333, CI 95% = [(0.1068–1.038]). Isometric hip adductor and abductor strength imbalances of the non-dominant lower limb and a history of previous injury were risk factors for groin injury in soccer players.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/

Como melhorar a experiência do turista no destino desde os aeroportos: o caso do aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro

    No full text
Air transportation plays a major role as a means of transport, social connector, and economic booster. Over the years, traveler’s perception of airports has evolved, with airports being seen less as mere boarding and disembarking infrastructures, but more as integral parts of the tourist experience. This study focuses on Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (AFSC), located in the northern region of Portugal, and intends to diagnose and analyze the arrival and departure experience of passengers, with the aim of proposing significant improvements. Mixed-methods research was adopted, which is understood as a combination of different theories, methods and sources that help to overcome the natural obstacles that arise when using a singular approcah to the study (Denzin 1970). Creswell & Plano (2011) define mixed methods as a process of collecting, analyzing and combining qualitative and quantitave techniques in the same research. In the case of the presente study, interviews with professionals in the sector and surveys of AFSC users and tourists were combined, as well as literature analysis and benchmarking Comparative analysis revealed innovative and sustainable strategies in airports such as Schiphol and Vienna, focusing on ecological efficiency and modernization, respectively. Meanwhile, AFSC stood out by its operational efficiency, particulary in the speed of baggage processing and formalities. It is noteworthy, however, that there is a need to enhance the cultural and sensory experience at the airport, as well as the available tourist information. Integration with public transportation and improvements in the airport's design were also identified as areas for improvement. The conclusions point the need for an integrative strategy in the management of the AFSC, emphasizing operational efficiency and the cultural, sensorial, and informational experience of passengers. The implementation of the suggested actions will position AFSC as a representative portal of the Northern region of Portugal, improving the overall experience of its users

    Enhancing sustainability through non-financial reporting

    No full text
The issue of sustainability has become increasingly important at a global level, prompting governments, international organizations, and private and public organizations to seek ways to contribute to sustainable development. However, the lack of accountability and transparency in organizations has made it difficult to identify, measure, and disclose their sustainable practices and impacts. Additionally, there is a lack of consensus on the determinants and impacts of the extent and quality of non-financial information reporting. Enhancing Sustainability Through Non-Financial Reporting is a book edited by Albertina Monteiro, Ana Pinto Borges, and Elvira Vieira that offers a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between sustainability/ Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices and reporting, and the accounting, finance, and management fields. The book provides a high-quality vehicle for the dissemination of new knowledge and tendencies, using both qualitative and quantitative methods. It welcomes and encourages articles from both academics and practitioners, with empirical and theoretical articles accepted to reach various audiences and a diversity of topics. The book aims to better understand the contributions of organizations to sustainable development, the level, determinates, and impacts of non-financial information reporting, the impact of sustainability reporting standards on the extent and quality of non-financial reporting, and the role and challenges of accounting, finance, management, and auditing. It is an essential resource for academics and practitioners in accounting, finance, and management, as well as other interested groups and individuals seeking to enhance sustainability through non-financial reporting.B913-0565-0908 | Elvira Vieirainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
