Impact of daylight saving time on energy consumption in higher education institutions : a case study of Portugal and Spain
Daylight Saving Time (DST), involving clock shifts forward in spring and backward in autumn, was introduced to promote energy savings. However, its effectiveness remains controversial, especially in buildings with temporary occupancy like academic institutions, which have high daytime use but low summer occupancy. This study investigates the impact of DST transitions on energy consumption across seven campuses of two higher education institutions (HEIs) in northern Portugal and Spain, located in different time zones, using measured data from 2023. The analysis accounted for the structural
and operational characteristics of each campus to contextualize consumption patterns.
Weekly electricity consumption before and after DST changes were compared using independent samples t-tests to assess statistical significance. Results show that the spring transition to DST led to an average energy saving of 1.7%, while the autumn return to standard time caused an average increase of 1.2%. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in five of the seven campuses. Descriptive statistics and confidence intervals indicated that only sites with intervals excluding zero exhibited consistent changes. Seasonal energy demand appeared more influenced by academic schedules and thermal comfort needs— particularly heating—than by DST alone. Higher consumption coincided with periods of
intense academic activity and extreme temperatures, while lower demand aligned with holidays and longer daylight months. Although DST yielded modest energy savings, its overall impact on academic campus energy use is limited and highly dependent on local conditions. The findings highlight the need to consider regional climate, institutional policies, user behavior, and smart technology integration in future energy efficiency analyses in academic settings.7211-5AB5-5A23 | Ivo AraujoN/

The research aimed to analyse the contribucion of tasks that promote conections with citizenship education to the development of statistical reasoning in the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education. The following guiding questions were established: (1) How is students’ statistical reasoning characterized regarding data, data representations, and statistical measures in solving tasks of this nature?; (2) What difficulties do students experience when solving tasks of this nature? To address these questions, a qualitative research methodology was adopted, involving a 6th-grade class. Data collection techniques and instruments included participant observation, field notes, students’ written work, and interviews.
The results show that students demonstrated skills in data interpretation but faced difficulties in justifying their answers, organizing and calculating frequencies, constructing graphs, and linking statistical concepts to real-world contexts. The integration of meaningful themes fostered student engagement, promoting a more contextualized learning experience. However, difficulties in written communication and in elaborating justifications indicate the need for interdisciplinary reinforcement to refine argumentation and statistical interpretation
This research contributes to the design of sustainable solutions in the construction sector applied to interior space coverings. As highlighted by several media outlets, the construction sector is going through a period of global uncertainty, with direct consequences for costs and waste management, imposed by RCD (Construction and Demolition Waste) legislation, which requires a reduction in waste production and greater responsibility from companies in its management. In this sense, the central problem of the study was to rethink and qualify the identity of materials associated with the construction sector, such as concrete. The study assumes design as a catalyst for innovation and survival in the coverings sector, transferring the potential of this material to the context of interior spaces. The cultural transfer between the coverings sector and interior design and the integration of the concept of Primary Design are the basis for the creation of luxury interiors. By applying principles of sustainability and innovation, design can revitalize the use of concrete, transforming it into a functional and aesthetic solution that responds to the sustainability needs of the construction sector. The methodology applied followed a mixed model, combining non-interventionist and interventionist approaches based on qualitative approaches. The non-interventionist approach was used to rigorously investigate the problem and generate well-founded alternative solutions, while the interventionist component allowed the hypotheses formulated to be tested, validating the effectiveness of the proposed solution. Qualitative research was also essential to enrich the understanding of the problem, adapting the objectives according to the development of the study. The work included the analysis of different hypotheses for the application of concrete in interior spaces, prototyping, the creation of prototypes and the carrying out of tests to optimize the aesthetic, social, business and environmental sustainability of the product. The results achieved show that design has the potential to transform traditional materials, such as concrete, into solutions that meet the aesthetic and sustainable demands of contemporary markets. The product developed was evaluated by the target audience of the partner company, which recognized the value of the proposal from both a functional and visual point of view, highlighting its suitability to current market trends. This research aims to prove that design can act as a driver of innovation within the construction industry, helping companies respond to contemporary challenges such as sustainability and adapting to new market demands. By transferring values and practices from one sector to another, design contributes to the creation of a new identity for materials that seem dormant in history and opens doors to new business opportunities with a sense of the future
Exploring canine mast cell tumors : an investigation into demographic characteristics, and grading system analysis from a pathology lab data (2019–2021)
Mast cell tumors (MCT) are among the most common neoplasia in dogs, representing up to 21 % of skin tumors. However, etiology and risk factors for its development remain unclear. This study aimed to reduce this knowledge gap by comprehensively analyzing 905 MCT cases diagnosed in Portugal between 2019 and 2021, using descriptive and inferential analyses. Most tumors affected the skin, with 69.9 % and 21.2 % classified as cutaneous and subcutaneous tumors, respectively. Only subcutaneous MCT exhibited female predisposition. Breed-specific analyses revealed male predominance in French Bulldogs and female predominance in Shar-Peis. Tumors in the extremities were the most prevalent (43.2 %, n = 183). Age-related characteristics varied by breed, with Pugs, Boxers, French Bulldogs, and Shar-Peis being diagnosed at younger ages. Logistic regression showed that age increased the likelihood of developing higher-grade cutaneous tumors (p < 0.01, OR=1.17, 95 % CI 1.02–1.21) and subcutaneous tumors with an infiltrative pattern (p = 0.02, OR=1.17, 95 % CI: 1.04 –1.33). The estimated annual incidence risk for MCT in dogs from Lisbon and Setúbal districts is 3.1 cases per 10,000 dogs, and 3.0 for males and 3.2 for females. Compared to mixed-breed dogs, Boxers, Shar-Peis, and Golden Retrievers had significantly higher relative risks (7.1, 6.3, and 5.9, respectively, p < 0.01). Sex-specific relative risks showed Boxers with the highest values among males (9.9, p < 0.01) and Shar-Peis among females (8.0, p < 0.01). This study provides insights into canine MCT, emphasizing the importance of age, sex, and breed, as well as the need for tailored veterinary care that considers these demographic characteristics to enhance prevention, early detection, and management.5F1C-9D14-387E | Joana Margarida Ferreira da Costa ReisN/

Dry needling in sports and sport recovery: a systematic review with an evidence gap map
Background Dry needling is an increasingly popular technique used in sports and regenerative medicine contexts. However, there is no comprehensive overview of investigations of dry needling in sports and sport recovery.
Objectives The objectives were to perform a systematic review of dry needling in sports athletes with an evidence gap map, to identify current gaps in the literature, and to provide stakeholders with direction for future research.
Methods Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines were followed. Studies on healthy and injured athletes receiving dry needling were included. Three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) were searched, data were synthesized narratively, key data were summarized quantitatively, and an evidence gap map was created.
Results The authors incorporated 24 studies into the current study, encompassing 580 athletes, predominantly involving talent/developmental and highly trained/national-level athletes across 13 sports. Most studies used passive or placebo controls, with 37.5% incorporating active controls. Interventions focused mainly on the lower limbs (58.3%). Around 69% of studies reported pain perception outcomes, while six examined muscular strength, activity, and range of motion. While results varied, dry needling generally showed a more positive effect on pain than on athletic performance. Conclusions Dry needling studies seem to describe general effectiveness and safety for reducing pain and muscle stiffness in a wide variety of body regions. However, further research is needed on underrepresented populations such as elite, world-class, and Paralympic athletes, as well as expanding investigations into long-term effects and a broader range of muscle groups,
particularly the hamstrings. The results may be valuable for medical professionals, sports medicine specialists, and researchers.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/
The teaching of orality in official regulatory texts, in Portugal
ABSTRACT:
Given the importance of official regulatory texts (also) for the teaching of orality, this contribution
of ours analyzes precisely what is proposed, for this domain, by curricular prescriptions of PreSchool Education and Basic Education. Globally, if the documents analyzed seem to show
considerable concern with skills related to the production and comprehension of oral texts, the
lesser attention that seems to be attributed to the remaining (sub)dimensions suggests that the
complexity of the oral has not yet been fully apprehended.3213-8D7F-ACAB | LUCIANA MANUELA DE ALMEIDA GRAÇAN/
