How is the association of teat-end severe hyperkeratosis on udder health and dairy cow behavior?

    Get PDF
The teat-end hyperkeratosis is a pathology which causes pain and discomfort in dairy cows, increasing the risk of infection of the mammary gland. A total of 2,957 dairy cows from 43 farms in Portugal were examined to evaluate the teat-end, degree of hyperkeratosis and callosity on 11,828 teats. Factors related to milking management, characteristics of the individual and udder health status with the most severe level of hyperkeratosis were evaluated. The link between stepping and kicking during milking and the levels of hyperkeratosis was also investigated. Most animals observed (70%) showed signs of hyperkeratosis and 12% showed the teat-end more serious types, thick and extreme. The incidence of severe hyperkeratosis was highly variable between farms (1-35%) and front teats showed twice the risk compared to back teats (P <0.000). A trend towards higher levels of hyperkeratosis in cows with higher milk production was identified (P <0.094). Hyperkeratosis increased with parity (P <0.000) and for the period 61-180 days of lactation (P <0.000). Over-milking influenced hyperkeratosis levels (P <0.002). Higher levels of hyperkeratosis were observed on cows with a higher incidence of mastitis (P <0.004). More steps (P <0.025) but no kicks during milking were also associated with higher levels of hyperkeratosis. The results suggest that hyperkeratosis needs to be monitored in order to prevent and control this pathology, ensuring the udder health and welfare of dairy cows.FE1B-06B2-126F | José Pedro Pinto de AraújoN/

Morfologia e crescimento dos 6 aos 10 anos de idade em Viana do Castelo, Portugal

    Get PDF

Causality in economics with time series data : a guided tour since classical antiquity

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The transport network and mobility aspects are constantly changing, and major changes are expected in the coming years in terms of safety and sustainability purposes. In this paper, we present the main conclusions and analysis of data collected from a survey of drivers in Spain and Portugal regarding user preferences, highlighting the main functionalities and behavior that an advanced driver assistance system must have in order to grant it special importance on the road to prevent accidents and also to enable drivers to have a pleasant journey. Based on the results obtained from the survey, we developed and present a working prototype for an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), its architecture and rules systems that allowed us to create and test some scenarios in a real environment.5311-8814-F0ED | Sara Maria da Cruz Maia de Oliveira PaivaN/

Study on marketing in restaurants with a presence on the web : the influence of communication and attributes valued by customers

    No full text
The empirical study focused on restaurant companies with web presence in Viana do Castelo, located in Portugal, aiming to understand the influence of communication and attributes valued by customers in the marketing of these companies. In order to complete this study, a questionnaire survey was made and distributed among various restaurant companies and their respective customers. Given the results obtained, it was found that the focus on a good location, the environment and the kind service are paramount attributes to attract new customers, particularly belonging to the female gender group. This will benefit the company's recommendation to new people, since this is how most customers come to the restaurant establishment for the first time. On the other hand, social media and online intermediaries seem to have some relevance in how people know these companies. Therefore, we suggest a greater bet from restaurant companies on the three attributes most valued by customers as well as on social media and online intermediaries, specially oriented towards the female gender group.8316-FD77-85EB | Pedro Miguel Fonseca Moreira de Carvalhoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Significance bias in the tourism-led growth literature

    No full text
We use an original meta-regression analysis to test the existence of bias of statistical significance in the literature on the study of Granger causality relationships between tourism and income. We conclude for the presence of such bias. We also conclude that some methodological choices are more likely to lead to statistically significant results. Additionally, we find that the empirical association between tourism and income is stronger the shorter the time horizon analyzed and that it is correlated with the countries' economic, touristic and demographic profile. Altogether, our results suggest that there are reasons to mistrust the typical methodological approach followed by the literature reviewed and cast doubt on its usual implications for economic policy.5118-0ED1-0B16 | Nino Valério Matos da Fonsecainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Determinants of international association meetings : a panel data analysis

    No full text

Big data and modern-day technologies in COVID-19 pandemic : opportunities, challenges, and future avenues

    No full text
The COVID-19 pandemic has emerged as one of the most crucial health emergencies in the last decade where almost all entities of a nation’s ecosystem like inhabitants, businesses, governments, economies, and environment are impacted. The large volumes of epidemiological, clinical, personal, and environmental data generated during any pandemic can provide useful insights about the underlying causes, symptoms, relations, and correlations, which if analyzed can assist in mitigating the impact to a great extent. The cheap and easy connectivity and communication provided by the social media platforms (SMP) have established them as one of the most preferred mediums of communications among the masses. The data generated by these platforms can be analyzed in context of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis to provide critical information and insights related to the ground level realities like spread and severity of infection, the state of implementation of control measures, the mental state of individuals, and their needs. The tweets and comments of the users can provide information about the current situation and intensity of the problems in the affected regions. With the help of techniques like sentiment analysis and web mining, we can identify the emergent requirements and needs (like food, shelter, medicine, medical emergencies, security, etc.) of the population in the COVID-19-affected areas. With this chapter we aim to identify several use cases where the big medical data from the patients, epidemiological data, social media data, and environment-related data can be used to identify patterns, causes, and other growing factors of the COVID-19 pandemic with a goal to mitigate the damages and contain further spread of the disease. The chapter also discusses the impact of a preferred mitigation measure of nationwide lockdown on the number of new novel coronavirus-positive patients as well as the impact on the environment by analyzing the available data. Since the tourism industry is now of the worst hit businesses, we also discussed the impact of COVID-19 on tourism industry. Furthermore, we identify the challenges associated with handling the massive amount of data generated during such pandemics. Finally, the future avenues of using big data for effectively devising predictive mechanisms and techniques to contain such pandemics in the initial stages are discussed. The chapter also discusses the importance of edge/fog technologies and IoT to identify possible use cases and where immediate point of contact actions is needed to mitigate the situations. Since edge computing facilitates calculations near the origin of data, it is imperative to understand the potential use cases in times of COVID-19-like pandemics.5311-8814-F0ED | Sara Maria da Cruz Maia de Oliveira PaivaN/

COVID-19, that appeared in China on December 2019, led to a Global Public Health Emergency decreed by World Health Organization on 30 January 2020. With several lockdowns taking place worldwide, various tasks and activities started to rely on technology to deliver services and elementary goods. In an attempt to stop the spread and help save lives, we have assisted to the appearance of several software applications using AI, big data, robots and drones for several and distinct purposes and domains of the society, business and citizen´s daily lives, claiming the importance technology can have in a pandemic crisis. This paper addresses several domains such e-commerce, the health sector, education and public services, in order to summarize the impacts during this COVID-19 pandemic crisis and refers to how technology was used so far.5311-8814-F0ED | Sara Maria da Cruz Maia de Oliveira PaivaN/

Adaptation and validation of a measure of students’ adaptive and maladaptive ways of coping with academic problems

    Get PDF
Little research has, to date, explored students’ coping in the academic domain. Yet, children and adolescents frequently refer daily academic difficulties as a common source of stress. The ways children respond to academic demands have the potential to make a difference in their learning and achievement. Therefore, the availability of a measure of academic coping is of critical importance to expand educational research and practice in this area. The current study adapted and validated the Portuguese language version of the Multidimensional Measure of Coping (MMC). Cognitive interviewing, confirmatory factor analysis, and measurement invariance testing using calibration and validation samples provided sound support for the validity of the MMC to measure academic coping among Portuguese elementary and middle school students. Furthermore, the external and discriminant validity of the scale was established based on the relations found between adaptive and maladaptive coping and their differential functionality for academic performance.8C1E-AFB9-6BE1 | Maria Teresa Martins GonçalvesN/
