Critical thinking: an experiment in initial teacher education
It is undeniable that educational institutions play an important role in any society’s development. It is expected for schools to contribute to people’s development in a whole, as well as to prepare students for the personal, professional, social, and economic challenges that a constant changing world demands. Such form of education involves building knowledge, developing dispositions, values, abilities, and skills, so that individuals can have a holistic understanding of the world, while also knowing when and how to act in all life’s challenging situations.
Being aware of how to think and act critically from early on is particularly decisive in initial teacher education curricula, especially in the Curricular Unit “Initiation to Professional Practice 3”, which was attended by 3rd year students of Basic Education of a Polytechnic Institute in the North of Portugal, in the 2020/2021 academic year.
This was achieved throughout appropriate strategies and methodologies, which were able to promote: (1) the development of the students’ critical skills, who will ultimately become future education professionals; (2) the development of the students’ sensitivity to understand the decisive role they have in shaping their potential students’ future; and (3) their empowerment as promoters of critical thinking.
It was the first time that students and teachers worked in this Curricular Unit and, therefore, from a methodological point of view, it was openly and experimental endeavour.
Based on the resources and guidelines made available, and after carrying out various training actions with children ranging between three and 10 years old, in this experiment, future teachers were suggested to identify different educational contexts and practices and were proposed to carry out an analysis, an evaluation and a reflection of and on several parameter
Based on the resources and guidelines made available, and after carrying out various training actions with children ranging between the ages of three and 10, in this experiment, future teachers were suggested to identify different educational contexts and practices while also being advised to carry out an analysis, an evaluation and a reflection of and on several parameters
Data were mainly collected from written records made by students and from conversations between them and/or between students and teachers. All of these took place in the classroom, where all tasks were monitored.
By analysing the collected data, it was made clear that the cognitive processes were highlighted during the resolution of the aforementioned tasks. That said, a few higher-level tasks were performed with certain difficulty by the students. They have reacted positively to these tasks, even though they have often focused on the content of the work instead of focusing on the skills as expected. Students have valued the opportunity to get to know different contexts, as well as various educational resources and model practices that could be applied in their future careers. By recognizing the importance of training selective, assertive, and thoughtful professionals, the teaching team believes that the Curricular Internship Units allow students to reflect critically about several aspects that relate, either directly or
indirectly, to education, as well as to the sharing of exemplary, inspiring, challenging, innovative, and context-appropriate educational practices, experiments and resources.B217-9560-A2C5 | Ana Raquel Costa Aguiarinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Assessment of low-cost infrared thermography systems for medical screening in nursing homes
Recent developments in microbolometer array technology have favored the spread of low-cost infrared cameras and their dissemination in different application domains, in particular, regarding medical applications. According to the World Health Organization, elevated body temperature is one of the most common indicators of an abnormal medical condition. Indeed, body temperature monitoring is paramount, particularly in pandemic scenarios like the world is living in since late 2019. In this context, we aim to develop a body temperature screening system using a low-cost infrared thermography system designed to be used in nursing homes. Towards our goal, this work presents the assessment procedure and the results obtained when comparing the performance of two low-cost infrared cameras with a more expensive flagship device.911A-2C18-106F | Carlos Jorge Enes Capitão de AbreuN/
Goat production in the county of Terras de Bouro: forest fire prevention, organic goat production and parasitism
In Terras de Bouro, in the northwest of Portugal, goat production is a relevant activity for social, economic and environmental development. Often animals and shepherds are seen along the landscapes of Gerês mountains and grazing plays an essential role in the landscape mosaic. Many of the grazing animals are goats, many of which are kept in organic production systems, as encouraged by local organizations. Goat production produces meat but also has an essential role in natural control of vegetation. The dry matter content and the flammability of the natural vegetation increases in the summer, which consequently enhances the risk of fire. Goats grazing influence the vegetal biodiversity, reduce the scrubland and contribute to reducing the fire risk. However, human management is important to reduce the negative impact to the ecosystem. The aim of this study is to estimate the environmental contamination with parasitic forms in goat faeces, in Terras de Bouro region, because the animals walk long distances during grazing and contaminate the environment with these parasitic forms. The parasitic forms remain infective in the environment and may also infect other domestic animals, wild animals and even humans. A coprological survey in goats (n=59) (4 flocks: 2 organic; 2 conventional units) was performed using the FLOTAC method. It is a very sensitive method and allows the detection of parasitic forms in faeces. Parasitic forms were present in all samples and a high diversity of parasitism was observed: Eimeria spp. (59/59), Strongylida (51/59), Dicrocoelium dentriticum (45/59), Nematodirus spp. (44/59), Skrjabinema spp. (26/59), Moniezia spp. (15/59) and Trichuris spp. (14/59). Fifty seven samples had concomitant infections. When it is necessary to control the animal parasitism, pharmaceutical compounds (most often) are used, which can also contaminate the environment. This selective pressure has led to the rise of parasitic resistance to antiparasitic compounds. The present preliminary results are part of an on-going project on the study and promotion on use of goats in forest areas, as a factor in the sustainability of human activities in rural areas, and having an important role avoiding fires in forest areas.A91F-E8B8-FA62 | Teresa Susana Letra Mateusinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Critical thinking in initial teacher education
Partindo do
avaliassem e refletissem, mobilizando, assim, processos cognitivos diversos.
ABSTRACT: All curricular guidelines show the need that the school has to train citizens who are able to answer, in a critical and autonomous way, to the challenges that society presents. Based on the need that future teachers should be critical thinkers and, simultaneously, be prepared to contribute to the
training of their future students in this area, in the curricular unit (UC) of Introduction to
Professional Practice 3 of the Degree in Basic Education, strategies and methodologies were
adopted to contribute to this preparation. In this sense, it was proposed that the students would,
after some training sessions with children aged between three and 10 years old, and based on the
resources provided, observe other realities and analyse, evaluate and reflect, in a manner that
applied different cognitive processes. Students teachers worked in this way for the first time on this
course, which is considered an exploratory experience. These teaching and learning situations,
which require a realistic examination and a reasoned, comparative, evaluative and reflective
analysis of the educational action and the whole structure on which it is based, are crucial from the
point of view of students and teachers. The students particularly highlighted the importance of
knowing different contexts and resources and practices that may constitute models for their future
professional activity. The teachers, aware of the importance of training selective, assertive and
reflective professionals in the choices they make, consider that, in these subjects of teacher training,
moments should be reserved for reflection on diversified aspects that relate directly and indirectly
to educational action and exemplary, inspiring, challenging, innovative and contextually
appropriate practices and resources should be exposed.B217-9560-A2C5 | Ana Raquel Costa Aguiarinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Presence of Helicobacter pylori and H. suis DNA in free-range wild boars
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative bacterium that infects half of the human
population worldwide, causing gastric disorders, such as chronic gastritis, gastric or duodenal
ulcers, and gastric malignancies. Helicobacter suis (H. suis) is mainly associated with pigs, but can
also colonize the stomach of humans, resulting in gastric pathologies. In pigs, H. suis can induce
gastritis and seems to play a role in gastric ulcer disease, seriously affecting animal production
and welfare. Since close interactions between domestic animals, wildlife, and humans can increase
bacterial transmission risk between species, samples of gastric tissue of 14 free range wild boars (Sus
scrofa) were evaluated for the presence of H. pylori and H. suis using PCR. Samples from the antral
gastric mucosa from two animals were PCR-positive for H. pylori and another one for H. suis. These
findings indicate that these microorganisms were able to colonize the stomach of wild boars and
raise awareness for their putative intervention in Helicobacter spp. transmission cycle.A91F-E8B8-FA62 | Teresa Susana Letra MateusN/
Determinants of tourist expenditure: the role of tourists' experiences in the city of Porto
Little attention has been paid to the specifics of urban and cultural tourism and the experiences associated with it, namely in the study of the factors that determine tourists' spending behaviour. We assess how tourists' spending during a visit to the city of Porto is related to experiences related to gastronomy and wine, to their socio-demographic attributes and the characteristics of the trip. Data is based on interviews with domestic and foreign tourists. Ordinary least squares (OLS) estimate shows that indicators such as age, education or activity in the labour market have a positive impact on the spending of tourists, with the length of stay being associated with lower spending. The experiences offered at a destination play an important and positive role in tourists' spending. This implies that it is important to offer specific offers and experiences to increase the attractiveness of the destination. Also, the relationships differ between men and women.B913-0565-0908 | Elvira VieiraN/
Urgent orders impact on materials management in portuguese construction sector: case study
The urgent orders could have an impact on construction company performance since affects
the organization of the work in the materials warehouse and enhance stress of workers. In this work,
the effect of material urgent orders in a Portuguese construction company was analysed. This project
consisted of an exploratory study carried out in two phases, the analysis of data and direct observation
of the process. The results show that, in this company, there are no-cost impacts on the operations
related to logistics, but with urgent requests, the rate of meeting deadlines is lower.9F18-6D02-26B9 | Ângela Maria Esteves da SilvaN/
Reducing environmental impact using vehicle route planning
Companies focus on achieving high service levels and need to combine short service times with the dynamics between cost and quality. Their transportation systems are therefore a fundamental part; they must be reliable and efficient. This study was implemented in a company of the marine industry, and its
final product has special characteristics that require special transportation, i.e., they need a truck with a special structure to be able to transport the boats. This situation causes the vehicle to return empty to the company, a route that the company must support economically. The company has already approached several options with logistic service providers (3PL) without obtaining positive solutions. It is in this sense that the present project arises, which aims to develop a tool for the creation of round-trip circuits, given that in the current context the company intends to acquire a vehicle with reduced environmental impact. In a first phase we analyze the company's needs based on the unique characteristics of the final product, then we study the existing options on the market. Culminating in the proposal of a vehicle that allows performing a circuit in round trip (distribute the final product and return with raw material and not empty) powered by renewable energy.FC10-68A7-C36A | Jorge Esparteiro GarciaN/
Viana do Castelo.
ABSTRACT: This paper reports on a study that seeks to understand future teachers' perceptions
about the use of digital technology in outdoor mathematics. We followed a qualitative
and interpretive approach, and data was collected through participant observation,
questionnaires and photographic records. Forty-eight future teachers participated in this
study, who were enrolled in a curricular unit of Didactics of Mathematics, using the
MathCityMap app to carry out a math trail in the city of Viana do Castelo. The results
show that they valued the experience, having had the opportunity to solve tasks in a real
context, through cooperative work, which promoted critical thinking and the
establishment of mathematical connections. They considered the application motivating,
easy to use and more interactive than the paper version, also referring to its contribution
to the engagement of students in active learning, the development of spatial orientation
and autonomy. As for limitations, the participants highlighted the possible lack of access
to Wi-Fi; the fact that younger students typically do not own smartphones; and, in terms
of tasks, limited answer formats to exact value, interval or multiple choice.0D1E-4824-1244 | Ana Cristina Coelho Barbosainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The use of CRM in marketing and communication strategies in portuguese non-profit organizations
he truth is that competitivity has gained a strong growth in business, and it is important that companies
pay attention to the practice of their relational marketing strategies. Technology, innovation, and digital
have been transforming the way society operates in the market. Organizations must look for current
opportunities in order to add value of their business and negotiation process and of course in the way
they act and interact with the target. This way, the current research demonstrates the importance of
CRM in relational marketing practices, particularly in non-profit organizations. Regarding the methodology, a case study was developed using a qualitative methodology through semi-structured interviews in a convenience sample, with the aim of retaining the opinion fundraising and marketing responsible department between the different organizations under study. The main result of this exploratory study appears to prove the importance of using CRM for the good practice of relational marketing strategies in order to attract, retain, and build trust with their stakeholders.691D-6753-BE59 | Manuel José Serra da FonsecaN/
