Choice experiments to elicit the users preferences for coastal erosion management : the case of Praia da Amorosa

    Get PDF
Coastal erosion is a complex and increasingly important problem, largely due to its efects and management strategies. The current context of climate change, together with centuries of human occupation of shorelines, adds pressure for the development of sustainable coastal management policies, the success of which crucially depends on the consideration of all stakeholders’ perspectives. This research investigates users’ preferences over alternative options of coastal erosion management. Through the implementation of a discrete choice experiment, respondents’ preferences regarding management alternatives are elicited, and their willingness to pay for alternatives’ attributes is estimated. The results show that respondents prefer some interventions to mitigate the problem rather than no action, and prefer lighter intervention (palisades, gangways) to heavy infrastructures (rockflls, seawalls, groynes). Moreover, the results show the presence of preference heterogeneity and thus the need to use more fexible and complex models. Based on the results obtained, it is possible to drive some policy implications. First, the do-nothing option is not viable from the population’s standpoint; second, although some type of coastal erosion protection is demanded by the general population, the preferred approach is for light forms, contrary to the policy adopted in the last century, and still overwhelmingly present in the territory. Lastly, given the considerable heterogeneity in respondents’ preferences, careful consideration of the welfare impact of coastal interventions by population segments is required.221F-EEA6-A7D7 | Susana OliveiraN/

Children’s motor competence (MC) was negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; however, possible chronic effects have not been studied. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the possible impact of the forced lack of physical activity (PA) during the COVID-19 lockdown on children’s MC two years later. The motor competence of sixty-seven healthy children (7.4–12.2 years old) was assessed using the Motor Competence Assessment (MCA). All participants completed the MCA tests at two different moments (before and after the COVID-19 lockdown), four years apart. The mean values after the COVID-19 lockdown for all participants on the subscales and on the Total MCA are lower, but no significant changes were found when controlling for gender and age (p > 0.05 in all analyses). However, a significant decrease was found in the Locomotor subscale in boys (p = 0.003). After dividing the participants into three age groups, the youngest also suffered a decrease in the Locomotor subscale (p < 0.001) and their Total MCA (p = 0.04). In addition, those participants who had a higher MC at baseline decreased their scores for the Locomotor (p < 0.001) and Manipulative (p < 0.001) subscales, and for the Total MCA (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the younger children and the more motor proficient did not fully recover from the negative effects of the pandemic lockdown after two years.4811-99FE-2ECD | Luis Paulo RodriguesN/

Resulting from the sociodemographic evolution of populations, the importance attributed to health and quality of life leads to a set of identified care needs and differentiated responses in health care. The woman, during her life cycle, has the opportunity to live the process of generating a new life. From this stage, important changes are made in all its systems, which lack proper monitoring in order to reprogram the structures involved and maximize functions and quality of life. The Specialist Nurse in Rehabilitation Nursing (EEER) focuses his attention on the person with special needs, aims at early diagnosis and intervention, promoting quality of life, maximizing functionality and self-care and preventing complications by avoiding disabilities or minimizing them throughout the life cycle. In this way, Rehabilitation Nursing (RE) undoubtedly has a contribution to make to the rehabilitation of women in the postpartum period. This Internship of a Professional Nature (ENP) aims at the development of common and specific competences within the scope of the Rehabilitation Nursing specialty, with the main objective of developing competences as an EEER in a community context, guided by the theoretical framework of Alaf Meleis, the Transition Theory. As an investigation component, a study was developed whose objectives were: To identify the motor and sensory symptoms of the abdominal and pelvic muscles of women in the postpartum period; Implement a motor and sensory functional reeducation program for postpartum women; To analyze the effects of the motor and sensory functional reeducation program on postpartum women; To know the perception of women about the effects of the motor and sensory rehabilitation program in the postpartum period. The study carried out is a mixed study, with a qualitative and quantitative approach, of an exploratory and descriptive nature. The data collection instruments were the Woman Characterization Questionnaire, the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Short Form (ICIQ-SF) and the Semi-Structured Interview. The study sample consisted of 7 postpartum women. The intervention took place through the implementation of a program of motor and sensory rehabilitation of the abdominal and pelvic muscles, in a group, in a weekly session of 60 minutes, for 8 weeks. After the intervention, it was found that the rehabilitation program implemented contributed to the reduction of low back and pelvic pain, decreased diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscles, decreased complaints related to sphincter incontinence, increased perineal muscle strength. At the end of the program, the women showed greater knowledge and skill about the abdominal and pelvic muscle rehabilitation exercises, revealed a perception of greater strength, less flaccidity and less pain compared to the beginning of the program, expressed feelings of surprise and satisfaction as well as the importance of professional support

The national network of integrated continuity care is one of the most recent responses of the Portuguese National Health System. It is therefore crucial to carry out studies that assess this response, but also focus on the professionals who ensure the provision of care on a daily basis. Knowledge about the quality of work life and work engagement of professionals is essential to improve the quality of these organizations. In this way, the motivation for this study arises, which aimed to know the levels of quality of life at work and work engagement of professionals in the national network of integrated continuity care. The data collection instrument consisted of a sociodemographic and professional questionnaire, the Quality of Work Life Scale (QWLS) by Sirgy et al. (2001) translated and adapted for the Portuguese population by Sinval et al. (2020) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale short version (UWES-9) by Schaufeli and Bakker (2003), translated and adapted for the Portuguese population by Sinval et al. (2018). In a universe of around 1000 professionals from Residências Montepio – Serviços de Saúde S.A., 240 individuals were studied. The results obtained show that professionals have values of quality of work life in line with other studies and that they have values of work engagement considered high. There were statistically significant differences in the means of quality of work life according to sociodemographic variables, gender (t=-1.97; p=0.016) and nationality (t=-2.041; p=0.042) and socio-professional variables, classification in salary level (t=--7.865; p<0.001), professional experience (t=-2.51; p=0.013), seniority in the institution (t=2.123; p=0.035), professional category (F=3.483 ; p=0.033) and type of employment relationship (F=3.178; p=0.043). There were also differences in the averages of work engagement taking into account sociodemographic variables, marital status (F=-4.28; p=0.006) and age group (F=3.476; p=0.009) and socioprofessional variables, classification in salary level ( t=--5.015; p<0.001), professional experience (t=-3.343; p<0.001) and professional category (F=6.385; p=0.002). There was a positive, moderate and highly significant correlation between quality of life at work and work engagement (r=0.658; p<0.001). It is concluded that the evaluations and, consequently, the interventions in terms of quality of work life and the work engagement of the professionals of the National Network of Integrated Continuity Care, must take into account the sociodemographic and professional variability of these individuals and that actions in terms of quality of work Life and specifically in terms of professionals' updating needs, can have positive effects on work engagement levels

Symbolic approach to 2-orthogonal polynomial solutions of a third order differential equation

    Get PDF
In a recent work, a generic differential operator on the vectorial space of polynomial functions was presented and applied in the study of differential relations fulfilled by polynomial sequences either orthogonal or 2-orthogonal. Considering a third order differential operator that does not increase the degree of polynomials, we search for polynomial eigenfunctions with the help of symbolic computations, assuming that those polynomials constitute a 2-orthogonal polynomial sequence. Two examples are extensively described.4516-0A1C-E9CD | Teresa Augusta MesquitaN/

Assessing trails and potential for hiking tourism in northern Portugal

    No full text
Outdoor activities, and in particular hiking activities, are amongst most significant tourism offer in many destinations, becoming even more relevant as COVID-19 pandemic hits Europe. Tourists are increasingly keen to travel to natural, rural and undertourism destinations, with a particular interest on Protected Areas (PAs). In order to provide extraordinary outdoor experiences, as hiking, a diversity of trails with certain infrastructure and general conditions, is critical. Yet, little research has focused on evaluating the existing conditions on a systematic approach, and based on specific assessment instruments. This paper aims at building upon this research gap, by proposing the assessment of the trails and the potential for hiking activities, in Northern Portugal, a tourism destination increasingly known for its natural and green landscape, especially vacacioned for outdoor activities. Given their well preserved landscapes, and natural and cultural resources, protected areas lend themselves as preferred settings for outdoor activities. Therefore, a comparison of existing conditions, inside and outside PAs will be performed. The assessment matrix employed in this study is original and innovative, constructed based on the analysis of related literature, but mostly with contributions from various professionals of outdoor tourism activities. The results of the assessment process are discussed and opportunities for improvement are identified.8014-1B5A-933A | Goretti Silvainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

From health literacy to self-care: contributions of the specialist nurse in rehabilitation nursing

    Get PDF
Background: Initiatives aimed at assessing and intervening in health literacy have the potential to promote adherence to self-care behaviours, which is the main focus of intervention by rehabilitation nurses. Thus, the objectives were to analyse the level of health literacy of working-age citizens and identify priority areas for intervention by rehabilitation nurses. (2) Methods: Quantitative, correlational and cross-sectional study, conducted in a multinational company, with the participation of 161 workers. The data were collected between 14 April and 7 May 2021, using a self-completion questionnaire composed of sociodemographic and clinical characterization and the European Health Literacy Survey, following a favourable opinion from the Ethics Committee and the company’s management. (3) Results: Overall, low to moderate literacy scores were predominant. Age and education were significantly associated with literacy scores. Workers with higher levels of health literacy had no diagnosed illnesses, took less medication, reported less sadness, fewer memory changes and less muscle and joint pain. (4) Conclusions: The fact that higher levels of health literacy trigger self-care behaviours and, consequently, fewer health problems reinforces the need for rehabilitation nurses to invest in this area.DA10-CEBF-4D75 | Maria Salomé Martins FerreiraN/

Kinesiophobia levels in patients with multiple sclerosis: a case-control investigation

    Get PDF
ear of movement or kinesiophobia is a health problem related to an irrational fear of physical movement and fatigue that can lead to a limitation of functional capacity and a decrease in daily physical activity. Thus, the purpose of this study was to test the level of kinesiophobia in people with multiple sclerosis and compare it with a group of healthy people. The findings of this research support evidence that kinesiophobia is higher in people with multiple sclerosis than in a healthy control group. Therefore, people with multiple sclerosis should be evaluated and monitored to plan the treatment and preventive care activities of a multidisciplinary health team (podiatrists, physiotherapists, nurses, physicians, occupational therapists) in the attempt to improve their quality of life, autonomy, and wellbeing.991B-C3B6-3D4F | Salete Soaresinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    nutrition and performance in football

    Get PDF
Nutrition is an undeniable part of promoting health and performance among football (soccer) players. Nevertheless, nutritional strategies adopted in elite football can vary significantly depending on culture, habit and practical constraints and might not always be supported by scientific evidence. Therefore, a group of 28 Portuguese experts on sports nutrition, sports science and sports medicine sought to discuss current practices in the elite football landscape and review the existing evidence on nutritional strategies to be applied when supporting football players. Starting from understanding football’s physical and physiological demands, five different moments were identified: preparing to play, match-day, recovery after matches, between matches and during injury or rehabilitation periods. When applicable, specificities of nutritional support to young athletes and female players were also addressed. The result is a set of practical recommendations that gathered consensus among involved experts, highlighting carbohydrates periodisation, hydration and conscious use of dietary supplements.D915-7373-ED16 | Cesar LeaoN/
