Besides Helicobacter pylori, a Gram-negative bacterium that may cause gastric disorders in humans, non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacters (NHPH) may also colonize the stomach of humans and animals. In pigs, H. suis can induce gastritis and may play a role in gastric ulcer disease, possibly in association with Fusobacterium gastrosuis. In the present study, gastric samples from 71 slaughtered pigs and 14 hunted free range wild boars were tested for the presence of DNA of F. gastrosuis and gastric Helicobacter species associated with pigs, dogs cats and humans, using species-specifc PCR assays, followed by sequencing of the amplicon. These gastric samples were also histopathologically evaluated. Almost all the pigs presented gastritis (95.8%). Helicobacter spp. were detected in 78.9% and F. gastrosuis in 35.2% of the animals. H. suis was the most frequently identifed Helicobacter species (57.7% of the animals), followed by a H. pylori-like species (50.7%) and less often H. salomonis and H. felis (each in 2.8% of the animals). H. suis was most often detected in the glandular (distal) part of the stomach (pars oesophagea 9.9%, oxyntic mucosa 35.2%, antral mucosa 40.8%), while the H. pylori-like species was mainly found in the non-glandular (proximal) part of the stomach (pars oesophagea 39.4%, oxyntic mucosa 14.1%, antral mucosa 4.2%). The great majority of wild boars were also afected with gastritis (71.4%) and Helicobacter spp. and F. gastrosuis were detected in 64.3% and 42.9% of the animals, respectively. H. bizzozeronii and H. salomonis were the most frequently detected Helicobacter species, while a H. pylori-like species and H. suis were only occasionally identifed. These fndings suggest that these microorganisms can colonize the stomach of both porcine species and may be associated with gastric pathology. This should, however, be confrmed through bacterial isolation. This is the frst description of the presence of F. gastrosuis DNA in the stomach of wild boars and a H. pylori-like species in the pars oesophagea of the porcine stomachA91F-E8B8-FA62 | Teresa Susana Letra MateusN/

Household costs for personal protective measures for dengue disease

    No full text
Dengue is a vector-borne disease considered one of the major concerns in public health. Measures can be used to reduce the impact of the mosquito around the houses. In this paper, the main focus is mosquito bites prevention through the use of personal protective measures (PPM), such as skin repellent and bed nets. It is proposed a system with six ordinary differential equations, modeling the interaction human-mosquito. At the same time, a functional, related to the household costs with these measures, is added. The aim is the studying optimal control analysis to understand the best way of applying these measures. It is concluded that the application of skin repellent and treated bed nets have as impact on the reduction of infected people and at the same time contributes to the flattening of dengue cases, which could lead to better health cares for each patient.DA17-66FE-09A6 | Helena Sofia RodriguesN/

Tourism-led growth and granger causality : issues on publication bias

    No full text
We present the main findings of a research project concerned with the study of the presence of publication bias and significance bias in the literature on the relationships between tourism and economic growth by means of tests of Granger causality. We aim at giving answers to three related research questions: (!) Is there evidence of a preference for the publication of studies tending to the validation of any of the Granger causal hypotheses between tourism and economic activity? (2) Is there evidence of a preference for the publication of statistically significant results, independently of the Granger causal direction dectected? (3) Do the results of this line of research represent agenuine empirical association between tourism and income? The answers found are, respectively, "yes", "yes" and "no". Together with the additional finding that some methodological choices are correlated with the size of the emmpirical effects, we conclude that there are reasons to mistrust the typical methodological approaches followed by the literature reviewed, which cast doutt on its usual implications for economic policy. Nevertheless, purged from bias, we confirm previous assertions that the variability of the emperical effects can be explained by the degree of tourism specialization, by the level of economic development and by the size of the countries analyzed.5118-0ED1-0B16 | Nino Valério Matos da Fonsecainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Insights towards IFRS legitimation and institutionalization based upon perceptions of statutory auditors : the portuguese case

    No full text
Drawing upon the experience of adoption of an International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)' based model by Portuguese non-financial unlisted companies in 2010, designated Sistema de Normalização Contabilística (SNC), this research sheds light on the potential of the IFRS model to conform to countries and jurisdictions whose accounting system is remarkably disparate as it was Portugal's. From a vantage point in 2017, seven years after the formal implementation of the IFRS-based model, sixteen detailed interviews with statutory auditors were carried out to explore their perceptions regarding dimensions of relevance and suitability of the new accounting model to the Portuguese setting, major difficulties and benefits brought about. Evidence were gathered suggesting a significant level of legitimation and institutionalisation of the IFRS-based model: (i) the perceived motivations for SNC adoption are a good fit with the theoretically acknowledged motivations underlying accounting convergence; (ii) two major innovations introduced in the Portuguese accounting system by the IFRS model- the principle-based standards and the fair value, were largely perceived favourably; and (iii) in spite of criticisms concerning a set of in-country adaptations, SNC resembles the IFRS model at least close enough to have brought about a number of benefits that according to relevant literature would result from the application of such an accounting model: contextual benefits at the country and business levels, operational benefits, and benefits at the level of statutory auditors’ profession. Despite all these encouraging evidence towards the success of the adoption process of the IFRS model in Portugal, this was not exempt from its early difficulties or problems, with some of them still ongoing such as those related to fair value implementation and Notes preparation.BA16-BE06-B89C | Ana Paula Martins da SilvaN/

Wearables and internet of things (IoT) technologies for fitness assessment : a systematic review

    Get PDF
Wearable and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in sports open a new era in athlete’s training, not only for performance monitoring and evaluation but also for fitness assessment. These technologies rely on sensor systems that collect, process and transmit relevant data, such as biomarkers and/or other performance indicators that are crucial to evaluate the evolution of the athlete’s condition, and therefore potentiate their performance. This work aims to identify and summarize recent studies that have used wearables and IoT technologies and discuss its applicability for fitness assessment. A systematic review of electronic databases (WOS, CCC, DIIDW, KJD, MEDLINE, RSCI, SCIELO, IEEEXplore, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Cochrane and Web of Science) was undertaken according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. From the 280 studies initially identified, 20 were fully examined in terms of hardware and software and their applicability for fitness assessment. Results have shown that wearable and IoT technologies have been used in sports not only for fitness assessment but also for monitoring the athlete’s internal and external workloads, employing physiological status monitoring and activity recognition and tracking techniques. However, the maturity level of such technologies is still low, particularly with the need for the acquisition of more—and more effective—biomarkers regarding the athlete’s internal workload, which limits its wider adoption by the sports community.2411-78B2-7CDB | Pedro Miguel MoreiraN/

Enabling technologies and sustainable smart cities

    Get PDF
The technological interventions in everyday processes has led to the rise of Smart ecosystems where all aspects of everyday life like governance, transportation, agriculture, logistics, maintenance, education and healthcare are automated in some way or the other and can be controlled, managed and accessed remotely with the help of smart devices. This has led to the concept of Smart cities where Information Communication and Technology (ICT) is merged with the existing traditional infrastructure of a city which is then coordinated and managed using digital technology. This idea of smart cities is slowly but surely coming into reality as many countries around the globe are adopting this idea and coming up with their own model of smart cities. At the core of smart city lies the sensors and actuators embedded in the smart devices that sense the environment for facilitating effective decision making. The microcontrollers available in these devices are programmed to take decisions automatically based on the information received from the sensors. This involves integration of several information and communication technologies like artificial intelligence, protocols, Internet of things (IoT), wireless sensor network (WSN) etc. This paper discusses and extensively reviews the role of enabling technologies in smart cities. The paper further highlights the challenges and limitations in the development of smart cities along with the mitigation strategies. Specifically, three categories of challenges are identified namely technical, socio-economic and environmental giving specifics of each category. Finally, some of the best practices for attaining sustainable smart cities are provided.5311-8814-F0ED | Sara Maria da Cruz Maia de Oliveira PaivaN/
