    No full text
ABSTRACT: This text is the result of an experience carried out with students of the 3rd year of the Degree in Basic Education of a Higher School of Education of a Polytechnic Institute of Northern Portugal, in the second semester of the academic year 2019/2020. During this period, the curricular articulation between two curricular units took place: one within the scope of Didactics, more specifically the Didactics of Portuguese, and another with internship characteristics - Introduction to Professional Practice 3. Research was carried out on the foundations of Curricular Articulation and its implications for the teaching and learning process in general, and on the recommendations of educational policies in Portugal. It was considered pertinent to implement this experience in an initial teacher training course, since it is believed that the training path of these students will influence their teaching practices in the future. It should be noted that this work involved a constant collaborative and reflective practice on the part of the teachers involved. The final results reveal that the Curricular Articulation is not only possible but also necessary from a formative point of view, since it implies the mobilization of knowledge, skills, competences and resources. Likewise, from the students' perspective, this articulation is desirable, as it allows them to experience model situations that can be mobilized for their future practices.B217-9560-A2C5 | Ana Raquel Costa AguiarN/

Urban residents beliefs concerning green space benefits in four cities in France and Portugal

    Get PDF
Understanding how urban residents rate the benefits associated with urban green spaces is crucial in developing appropriate urban green infrastructure strategies. This study explores residents’ beliefs concerning the benefits of urban green spaces and investigates whether similarities and differences can be highlighted in four different French and Portuguese urban areas (Paris, Angers, Lisbon and Porto) through a questionnaire survey (n = 1000) based on the best–worst scaling (BWS) method. The results demonstrated that urban green space benefits are not equally valued among cities, suggesting that there is simultaneously a consensus among the most and least valued benefits across cities, as well as local variations in city residents’ beliefs about some other benefits of urban green spaces. For example, the importance of urban green spaces for personal health and well-being and to facilitate contact with nature were noted by residents of all four urban areas; consensus also exists on the little support given to two microclimatic functions of green spaces, namely, air temperature reduction and noise reduction. On the other hand, some green space benefits, such as the promotion of biodiversity or the contribution to the city image, are differentially valued among the four cities. Overall, the study stresses the importance of developing local assessments of the beliefs surrounding the benefits of urban green spaces. Recognizing these multiple beliefs and communicating clearly about the benefits offered by green spaces may help to mitigate future conflicts between residents and urban planners and managers, and thus contribute to optimizing green infrastructure planning benefits.0119-47CC-D459 | Teresa Cristina Fernandes Ferreira MadureiraN/

    Get PDF
ABTRACT: Teaching and learning methodologies might play a central role in promoting complex competences in higher education, especially in terms of epistemological development, which is structured on the students’ assumptions about the characteristics of knowledge (ways of knowing). The Problem-Based Learning (PBL) methodology often comprises the analysis and discussion of hypothetical and/or real problematic scenarios that deal with several factors simultaneously, for which there are various possibilities of explanation and whose solutions are not always consensual between experts, as is the case in the area of Geology and Environment (GE). Thus, one of the approaches for the development of complex cognitive processes, such as epistemological development, may be accomplished through the application of PBL in an academic context. The quasi- experimental study was undertaken in the GE curricular unit of a Portuguese public faculty. It aimed to untangle whether the PBL methodology, which implies the exploration of problematic scenarios, allows to enhance the students’ ways of knowing compared to the traditionally applied teaching methodology. For this purpose, an Intervention Program (IP) was developed, based on the PBL methodology. The convenience sample involved a total of 33 students, divided into two groups: experimental (n = 16) and comparison (n = 17), being the students in the experimental group subjected to the IP, over a 9 week-period of an academic semester, and throughout weekly sessions of two hours. The Portuguese version of the Measure of Epistemological Reflection (MER) was used to collect data. The findings obtained showed statistically significant differences between the experimental and comparison groups, in global terms and in the “role of peers” domain. This result points to an association between the most complex ways of knowing and the implementation of the PBL methodology in higher education, in GE course.E51F-89A1-B769 | Carla Fariainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

With or without you: beneficial and detrimental associations between companion dogs and Human psychological adjustment during a COVID-19 lockdown phase

    No full text
It has been proposed that companion animals, and dogs in particular, may be helpful during the COVID-19 pandemic, notably for psychological adjustment. The present study addressed this idea in a sample of 509 Portuguese individuals exposed to a national lockdown. Linear regression analyses were performed to test for associations between having lived with a dog during that phase and experienced levels of anxiety and depression while considering potential moderating effects. Sub-analyses on 345 dog owners were performed to explore how different dimensions of the dog–owner relationship are associated with owners’ anxiety and depression levels. A complex association was found between having lived with a dog during the lockdown, living area, and anxiety. For participants in rural and semi-urban areas, living with a dog was associated with lower anxiety; for participants in urban areas, living with a dog was associated with higher anxiety. Among dog owners, dog walking was marginally associated with lower depression, while perceived costs derived from caring for a dog and emotional closeness were associated with higher anxiety and depression. The results highlight the importance of going beyond mere ownership when studying the effects of companion dogs on human health and wellbeing. Also, they call for attention to dogs as a source of both concern and potential for health planners when defining strategies to manage mental health. © 2022 International Society for Anthrozoology (ISAZ).A91F-E8B8-FA62 | Teresa Susana Letra MateusN/

    Get PDF

First report of Echinococcus ortleppi in free-living wild boar (Sus scrofa) from Portugal

    Get PDF
Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonosis that is prevalent worldwide. It is considered endemic in Portugal but few studies have been performed on Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato and their hosts. In this study, CE cysts are reported for the first time in a free-living wild boar (Sus scrofa) in Portugal. The presence of the metacestodes in the liver of the wild boar was identified by morphological features, microscopic examination and molecular analysis. The sequencing of part of the DNA nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer-1 (ITS-1) region revealed a G5 genotype that presently corresponds to Echinococcus ortleppi. This is the first report of E. ortleppi in Portugal and to the best of the authors’ knowledge, in Europe. These results suggest that wild boar may be a host of CE, namely, crossing the livestock–wildlife interface, which has important public health implications. Wildlife reservoirs must be taken into account as CE hosts and surveillance of game as well as health education for hunters should be implemented using a One Health approach, with implementation of feasible and tailor-made control strategies, namely, proper elimination of byproducts in the field.A91F-E8B8-FA62 | Teresa Susana Letra MateusN/

Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in client-owned cats from Portugal

    Get PDF
The close contact between humans and domestic cats raises concerns about the potential risks of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Thus, this study aims to investigate anti-SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in client-owned cats from Portugal and evaluate the infection risk of cats that maintain contact with human COVID-19 cases. A total of 176 cats, belonging to 94 households, were sampled. Cat owners answered an online questionnaire, and cats were screened for antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 using a commercial ELISA. Twenty (21.3%) households reported at least one confirmed human COVID-19 case. Forty cats (22.7%) belonged to a COVID-19-positive and 136 (77.3%) to a COVID-19- negative household. The seroprevalences of cats from COVID-19-positive and -negative households were 5.0% (2/40) and 0.7% (1/136). The two SARS-CoV-2-seropositive cats from COVID-19-positive households had an indoor lifestyle, and their owners stated that they maintained a close and frequent contact with them, even after being diagnosed with COVID-19, pointing towards human-to-cat transmission. The SARS-CoV-2-seropositive cat from the COVID-19-negative household had a mixed indoor/outdoor lifestyle and chronic diseases. Owners of the three SARS-CoV-2-seropositive cats did not notice clinical signs or behavior changes. This study highlights the low risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission from COVID-19-positive human household members to domestic cats, even in a context of close and frequent human–animal contact.A91F-E8B8-FA62 | Teresa Susana Letra MateusN/

Comparisons between bioelectrical impedance variables, functional tests and blood markers based on BMI in older women and their association with phase angle

    Get PDF
The aim of the present study was to compare electrical bioimpedance variables, blood markers and functional tests based on Body Mass Index (BMI) in older women. Associations between Phase Angle (PhA) with functional tests and blood markers were also analyzed. A total of 46 independent elderly people participated in the study, and they were divided into four groups according to BMI values: Group 1 (G1, BMI 25–30 kg/m2); Group 3 (G3, BMI > 30–35 kg/m2); Group 4 (G4, BMI > 35 kg/m2). In addition to the weight and height used to calculate the BMI, the following body composition variables were collected: fat mass (FM), fat-free mass, intracellular water (ICW), extracellular water (ECW), total body water (TBW) and PhA (50 kHz) through InBody S10 equipment. Functional capacity was assessed using the Fullerton battery of tests: arm-curl; chair-stand; 6 min walking test (6MWT); time up-and-go test (TUG); standing on one leg (SOOL) and take 10 foot-lines (10FL). The main results showed differences between groups in the tests: 6MWT, SOOL and 10FL between G1 vs. G3 and G2 vs. G3 (p < 0.05); ACT, AIC and AEC between G1 vs. G4 (p < 0.05); FM among all groups (p < 0.05). Negative correlations were found between PhA and the agility test in G1 (r = −0.848; p = 0.008) and G4 (r = −0.909; p = 0.005); PhA and chair-stand in G3 (r = 0.527; p = 0.044); PhA and forearm flexion in G3 (r = 0.641; p = 0.010) and G4 (r = 0.943; p = 0.001); PhA and 6MWT in G4 (r = 0.771; p = 0.042). This study found that there is a clear trend towards better functional capacities with better parameters of body composition. Although there were no differences between groups in PhA, associations were found between different functional tests with PhA, which reveals the importance of this variable as a marker of health status.D915-7373-ED16 | Cesar LeaoN/

How digital media can help fight food waste

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study intends to understand how digital media can help raise consumer awareness of the importance of combating food waste. For this, two issues were investigated: if individuals are aware of this problem food; and if are willing to learn about digital tools that promote combat this type of waste. Methodology: To assess the willingness of individuals to join digital media to combat food waste, an online questionnaire was administered to 211 individuals. The data collected were analysed thought of multivariate statistical techniques. Findings: Most consumers proved to be aware of what food waste consists of using various strategies to reduce it. However, a consumer segment with little knowledge about this topic emerged. This segment said they didn't know any brands or applications to combat food waste, but when confronted with their names, they said they knew or at least had heard of them, and subsequently demonstrated the desire to deepen or acquire their services. Originality: Understanding how digital media contribute to consumer awareness of the importance of combating food waste can help marketers design marketing strategies on this topic. Furthermore, the present research contributes to current literature on fighting food waste.B913-0565-0908 | Elvira VieiraN/
