Scientific communication pursues the objective of favoring the dissemination and exchange of research results; the way to achieve it is the scientific publication that must go a long way: from writing the manuscript, selecting the appropriate journal, passing the arbitration and, finally, submitting to the editorial process before publishing; what is described in a few words is very laborious. In our times the interest of the professionals has increased to publish the results of their investigations; all this motivated by communicating the results of the research, obtaining recognition, moving to a higher category, responding to pressure from institutions, among others; but the experience and prestige of the Cuban stomatology is not yet reflected in the publications, there are reports that say so.When the author has selected the journal, he should carefully study the guidelines for authors; in our magazine they are quite explanatory and with following them step by step, at least the formal aspect of the article is achieved; However, sometimes this does not happen, many authors do not take them into account and 80% of the articles before sending them to arbitration are rejected. Some may seem like a very drastic measure, but it is based on the fact that non-compliance with the aforementioned guidelines makes it difficult not only for the arbitrators to work from a scientific point of view, but also for the editorial process.Among the most frequent errors found before sending the articles to arbitration are: unstructured summary, excess of words as well as tables and figures, as well as the recommended size of the latter, outdated bibliographic references, among others.Once the article is submitted to arbitration, it is rigorous and discouraging for authors who receive the signs with displeasure, without realizing that the arbitrators work in an unrecognized and anonymous way, so that the article has greater quality and transparency.Stomatologists must understand that the basic standards agreed upon globally by the scientific editors of biomedical journals are becoming more rigorous every day, so we are committed to increasing our publications with high quality in order to expose the work we carry out in Cuba to the world scientific community. in the world for the sake of oral health
Introduction: The odontogenic keratocyst was recently reclassified in 2017 by the World Health Organization as a cystic lesion of epithelial development derived from the enamel organ or the dental lamina. It shows common characteristics to cysts such as slow and continuous growth; however, it arouses attention for its high aggressiveness and recurrence rate. Objective: To show marsupialization followed by enucleation as a definitive treatment of odontogenic keratocysts. Clinical case: A 63-year-oldwoman with odontogenic keratocyst on the left side of the mandible, treated by the marsupialization technique followed by enucleation. Conclusions: Although there are various treatment options, the dental surgeon may prefer the conservative method in the approach of the odontogenic keratocyst, because it presents the lowest rate of morbidity and relapse within the standards presented in the literature.
Introduction: accurate diagnosis of pulpal and periapical diseases is a phase in which systemic and local factors are evaluated. Diabetes is an example of chronic degenerative systemic disease. In 2012, there were 418 797 cases as well as other associated diseases, such as hypertension and renal failure in Mexico. Objective: to determine the frequency of pulpal and periapical diseases in systemically compromised patients who attended the Health Center Uayma, Yucatan, Mexico in 2013. Methods: observational and descriptive study was conducted. The universe of study was 689 patients. A non-probabilistic, convenience sampling of 100 patients aged 18 and older, which had some kind of systemic disease and also pulpal or periapical disease. With the voluntary informed consent and a prior medical evaluation by the attending physician, a dental history, the assessment of pain signs and symptoms of pain, pulp testing (thermal and electrical), palpation and percussion and diagnostic approach with staining/transillumination were made as well as radiographic periapical images were taken, analyzed and interpreted to confirm the diagnosis of periapical diseases. Summary statistics was used for data processing. Results: sixty-seven percent of patients had pulpal or periapical diseases. One hundred and six dental organs were analyzed, 41.5 % showed pulpal diseases and 58.5 % periapical diseases, being the chronic dentoalveolar abscess with 45.2 % the predominant one. Prevailing systemic disease was diabetes mellitus with 38 % of cases, accompanied with hypertension in 17 % and epilepsy in 1 % of patients. In the diabetic patients, the most common disease was the periapical one for 53.6 %. Conclusions: the systemically compromised patient faces highly frequent pulpal and periapical diseases. They may result from the response of the dental pulp to the lack of timely odontologic treatment and the systemic condition of the patient.
Introduction: vasoconstrictors are substances added to local anesthetics to lengthen their time of action, reduce their toxicity and enhance their local hemostatic effect. There is controversy about whether the use of vasoconstrictors in dental anesthetics has a negative effect on blood pressure and heart rate. Objective: determine the influence of vasoconstrictors added to dental anesthetics on blood pressure and heart rate. Methods: an experimental study was conducted with 120 patients divided in two groups of 60. These patients attended clinics in the Dental Academic Unit of the Autonomous University of Guerrero from July to December 2015. Group A was given just 3 % mepivacaine, whereas Group B was given mepivacaine with epinephrine at a concentration of 1:100 000. Measurements were taken of the patients' heart rate, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure at two moments: at baseline before infiltration and 5 minutes after infiltration. Statistical analysis was based on Student's t-test for independent samples. Results: heart rate and systolic blood pressure did not yield any statistically significant value. Diastolic blood pressure was the only hemodynamic parameter showing a statistically significant difference (t= 2.3; p= 0.02). Conclusions: the results obtained coincide with those reported by similar studies. At the doses recommended, epinephrine is safe for healthy patients as well as for those with controlled cardiovascular conditions.
Objectives: identify by polymerase chain reaction technique ten bacterial species obtained from necrotic root canals, and analyze their association with signs and symptoms of apical periodontitis (pain, exudate and mobility) in a specific geographic area: Santiago de Compostela (northwestern Spain). Methods: a descriptive study was conducted based on a one-year sample collection period. Forty-three samples were taken from necrotic root canals, at a rate of one sample per patient, who had been previously examined for radiographic apical periodontitis, of which the signs and symptoms were described. Sterile absorbent paper points were used to extract the DNA samples, applying the phenol-chloroform technique. The product was amplified by polymerase chain reaction, using specific primers for ten microorganisms. The result was visualized by electrophoresis using a UV transilluminator. Outcomes were analyzed statistically to determine which microorganisms were present individually and which formed associations such as the so-called red complex, according to the signs and symptoms present in the apical periodontitis. Results: Fusobacterium nucleatum was the most common individual microorganism (83.72 % of the samples). As to the association of microorganisms with signs and symptoms, Porphyromonas endodontalis was found to be significantly associated with exudate (p< 0.05) and mobility (p< 0.05), while both Enterococcus spp. and Treponema denticola (p< 0.01) had a significant association with pain. Incidence of the red complex was 6 cases in all. Conclusions: Fusobacterium nucleatum and Streptococcus spp. were the microorganisms identified as displaying the highest percentages. Porphyromonas endodontalis showed the greatest statistical association with signs and symptoms of apical periodontitis.
Dra. C. Jolan Bánóczy (1929-2016)
On Wednesday, August 31, 2016, Dr. Dra. C. Jolan Bánóczy, a great loss to the World Stomatology, died at the age of 87. He was born in Hungary on March 2, 1929. He graduated from the University Semmelweis, Budapest, Hungary, Doctor of Medicine in 1953, because the School of Dentistry opened its doors just in that year. His dedication to study and research led him to receive in 1956 his diploma of Doctor in Medical Sciences and already in 1968 he defended his thesis "Keratinization of the oral mucosa in physiological and pathological circumstances" to receive the degree of Doctor in Sciences (1978) with the theme "Clinical-pathological significance of oral leukoplakia."His scientific activity covered three aspects. For 25 years he investigated precancerous lesions together with the precancerosis group of the World Health Organization, led by Professor Jens Pindborg. He determined the clinical, histological and ultrastructural characteristics of buccal leukoplakia and carried out the largest follow-up study in that entity. He published the book "Oral leukoplakia" and about 80 scientific articles on the subject, many in international journals, among which there are five with Cuban authors. The second slope began in 1970; is dedicated for 30 years to the study of the etiology and prevention of dental caries; publishes articles referring to the clinical-epidemiological, microbiological and structural changes of enamel. It also investigates with Finnish collaboration the reducing effect of xylitol on dental caries.Follow-up studies demonstrated the considerable reduction of caries in Hungarian children by the consumption of fluoridated milk made in collaboration with the Borrow Foundation, of which she was president for several years. The third aspect is related to the teaching of Stomatology, in which it strived to achieve the harmonization of the training of future professionals in Europe promoting curricular changes; In this regard he made numerous publications and gave lectures throughout the world. She was vice president of the European Organization for Caries Dental Research (ORCA) and organized the ORCA Congress in Budapest and five national dental congresses with international participation. She was recognized as an honorary member of several institutions. On his last visit to Cuba (2008), he received the title of Honorary Member of the Cuban Society of Stomatology from its president Dr. C. Estela Gispert Abreu. The School of Stomatology of Havana organized a tribute and distinguished her with a well-deserved recognition of her career. He published more than 370 articles, numerous abstracts, 2 monographs and about 30 book chapters, he gave 400 lectures all over the world. Advised 6 scientific degrees, among which is the thesis of Doctor in Medical Sciences "Oral leukoplakia: epidemiological study in the City of Havana, Cuba and some histopathological aspects", by Dr. Irene Rodríguez Pérez. Since then, links of scientific collaboration with the Institute of Basic and Preclinical Sciences Victoria de Girón and the School of Stomatology of Havana were established; During this project he also exchanged with doctors Julio C. Santana Garay, Joaquin Urbizo Velez and Josefa Dolores Miranda Tarragó, which brought as a consequence a close scientific relationship and the emergence of undying ties of friendship and affection. The stomatology has said goodbye to an excellent professional, outstanding scientist, incomparable pedagogue, but above all to a human being who radiated wisdom, simplicity and love. It will remain in the memory of those who admired him and will recognize forever his dedication to the research and advance of Stomatology in the world. We express our condolences to your son Dr. Miklos Pal and thank him for the kindness of sending us the biographical information
Dr. Leandro Castañón Roche (1925-2016)
On Tuesday, November 22, 2016, the distinguished professor Dr. Leandro Castañón Roche passed away at 91 years of age, an example of professionalism and revolutionary value, an unfortunate loss for Stomatology in the central region of Cuba.He was born in Placetas, municipality of the former province of Las Villas, the 1st. October 1925. He entered the University of Havana in 1944 to study Dentistry; during his life as a university student he excelled in baseball, he was a monitor (delegate at that time) of the subjects Operatory and General Pathology; in these years he collaborated with the Movimiento Union Revolutionary Insurrection that integrated the University Student Federation (FEU) of the School of Dentistry; his academic results were excellent. He graduated from the University of Havana on July 11, 1949 as a Doctor in Dental Surgery; He moved to Placetas and worked in the office with his father; next to him began his revolutionary activity after March 10 when Batista's military coup; He was very active in clandestine work, as a member of the Revolutionary Directorate, the 26th of July Movement, the Authentic Organization, the Popular Socialist Party and the Insurrectional Nation Movement. At the triumph of the Revolution he held different responsibilities and encomiendas for the organization of the municipality in this new stage. In 1960 he was appointed Municipal Commissioner of Placetas; During this time he attended the National School "Ñico López" and participated in the Literacy Campaign in 1961. He was a member of the Provincial Party Bureau in Las Villas until 1968.His intellectual work was very active as of 1967: he began his first years in the postgraduate improvement since he is selected to receive a course of oral surgery at the National Institute of Stomatological Improvement (INPE), this represented a great start in the world of the Maxillofacial Surgery because in 1975 he graduated as an I Degree Specialist in Maxillofacial Surgery at the "Manuel Fajardo" Teaching Hospital in Havana. His specialty completion work was a lip reconstruction technique, created by him for patients affected by lip cancer, and later recognized as the Castañón technique. This was his top research because it links the oncological criterion and the plastic vision, with it he achieved recognition in important events and medical journals, he was distinguished by the scientific community and the State Council for his contribution to the sciences. Years later he obtained the II Degree of the specialty. He collaborated with the teaching that was given to students of the last year at the School of Stomatology of Havana. His teaching work continued in Placetas because he was responsible and teaching collaborator of technical students in Stomatology; later he directed the school of dental assistants in the province. In the Provincial Teaching Hospital of Villa Clara today "Celestino Hernández Robau", his intellectual work was on the rise: he was the founder of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and stood out in the training of specialists from the three central provinces. In 1980 he was appointed head of the Maxillofacial Surgery service, he participated during his life in a large number of provincial and national events; He was a very prominent anirist, he started in this movement in 1976 as his life president in the aforementioned hospital, about this organization he expressed: "The ANIR is my life, I achieved good results ...". In 1981 he was selected Outstanding Innovator and in 1986 Vanguardia Nacional. Its innovations also include: an instrument for mandibular prognathism operations using the Caldwell Letterman technique (guide hook) and a technique for eyelid reconstruction. The teacher Castanon, as we call him his disciples, loved science and studied it with fidelity, longing and dedication; in correspondence with his dedication have been the results he achieved, he managed not only to put his name among the most outstanding innovators in the country, but the entities he represented have also enjoyed such prestige, which was reflected in the press reports of those years. He published several articles in different national and foreign journals, and supervised various works of completion of the specialty of Maxillofacial Surgery. He was an excellent teacher, creative, much admired and loved by his students who will always follow his example of altruistic educator pending to educate and educate the new student generations. In his private life he formed an excellent family, his filial relationship was admirable and his example made his daughter and grandson embrace the career of Medicine; the first as a plastic surgeon and the second as a legal doctor. There was an excellent atmosphere of harmony in his family nucleus and of devotion and admiration towards his person that will never be able to disappear even with the passage of time
Introduction: bone regeneration of the posterior maxilla is an important feature to enable correct placement of implants and thus allow an adequate prosthetic rehabilitation. Several surgical techniques are reported, since the form of access to the sinus, elevation of Schneider membrane and fill the cavity. Objective: to address the resources used in bone regeneration surgery of the posterior maxilla and the effectiveness of the methods applied. Methods: an electronic search of the literature was performed in the databases LILACS, MEDLINE and BBO studies published in English and Portuguese. The inclusion criteria were considered articles between 2000 and 2014, with the key words that guided the search were: maxillary bone regeneration, Schneiderian membrane, maxillary sinus lift. 1 529 articles were obtained, of which 27 selected articles relevant to the study. Exclusion criteria were eliminated in the articles which were in the year below 2008 and fleeing the matter at hand. Data analysis and integration: it was found that the traditional technique of access to the maxillary sinus with the use of drills, lifting the membrane through curettes, and the regeneration itself with autogenous bone graft and/or heterogeneous continue as the most commonly used, however alternative as less invasive ultrasonic technology to access, hydrodissection to raise the Schneider membrane and biomaterials to fill the cavity emerge as viable, with favorable results options. Conclusions: there is a direction in the search for methods and materials that reduce the morbidity of traditional techniques and which offer satisfactory results in the short and long term. The use of surgical techniques less invasive and use of biomaterials are among the advances for the regeneration of the posterior maxilla.
Introduction: non-carious cervical lesions are the pathological loss of dental structure located in the amelocementum junction, which do not result from a bacterial causative agent. Given the incidence of this condition in the oral health, it is necessary to study it in detail in order to better know its clinical and epidemiological behavior and to prevent it and treat it more effectively. Objective: to determine the distribution and the characteristics of non-carious cervical lesions in patients from the "Electrico¨ health area in Arroyo Naranjo municipality in Havana province. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on a sample of 153 patients with non-carious cervical lesions. The classification of a non-carious cervical lesion was considered when a patient presents with some of the variants called erosion, abrasion and/or abfraction, or their combination. Other variables were also taken for this study, that is, sex, age, tooth group, location and risk factors. The Chi square test was used for the association of variables. Results: in the study, males with 52.9 % of the total number and the 37-47 year age group with 30.7 % predominated. Premolars represented the most affected dental group with 38.9 %; bruxism and harmful brushing were present in 43.8 % and 35.3 % of cases, respectively. Conclusions: non carious cervical lesions occur in the 37-47 age group, mainly in men and fundamentally affect upper premolars and 4 teeth per patient as average. Bruxism and harmful brushing were the most related risk factors to this type of non-carious lesion.
