Whipple: more than a surname, an eponym, a history

Sustainable development goals: the scenario of nations with emerging economies
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were established by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda, aiming to eradicate poverty, protect the environment, and ensure global prosperity. While they provide a universal framework, their implementation in developing countries faces significant challenges due to resource shortages, structural inequalities, and weak institutions. SDGs 1 and 2 are crucial for poverty and hunger reduction, while gender equality (SDG 5) and climate action (SDG 13) present critical obstacles. International cooperation and investment in infrastructure and education are essential for success. Cases like Rwanda have shown progress in gender equality and poverty reduction, whereas countries like Brazil and Mexico continue to struggle with persistent inequalities. Adapting the SDGs to specific national contexts is key to achieving sustainable development
Emerging Phenomena from A Transcomplex and Transdisciplinary Thought
Los fenómenos emergentes son nuevas posturas que se entretejen a partir de la creatividad que va navegando la inmensidad de la imaginación de investigador, el proceso de exploración conlleva a trascender de un esquema ideático moldeable, que se flexibiliza para adaptarse al momento histórico social. El mundo actual, evoca un viaje hacia un contexto dónde las ideas rozan el pensamiento científico, donde el intercambio de saberes coexiste y se entrecruzan con la innovación. En la actualidad se requiere de formarse para diversificar y diferenciar estos fenómenos emergentes, sin tener por ello que desviarse o desvincularse del proceso científico. En este sentido convergen conceptualizaciones segregables: en primera instancia, se tiene por pensamiento complejo y transcomplejidad, por otro lado; conocimiento disciplinar (multi-poli e interdisciplinar) y conocimiento transdisciplinar. Desde la visión del dogmatismo clásica el pensamiento complejo y el conocimiento transdisciplinar es inadmisible, no obstante, en esta era, es necesario y válido, para comprender el Contexto actual. Se hace necesario también que emerjan paradigma que admita deconstruir para reconstruir el mecanismo de los conocimientos, desde una postura fragmentada donde el investigador debata desde la planetaria. La actual reflexión explora los enfoques que apuesta la dimensión epistemológica, ontológica y metodológica de los Fenómenos Emergentes Desde Un Pensamiento transcomplejo y Transdisciplinario.
Integrating digital skills into the Health Sciences curriculum: A systematic review of pedagogical approaches
Introduction: The integration of digital skills into Health Sciences curricula has become a priority in the digital age, especially between 2018 and 2022. This article reviews the most relevant pedagogical approaches used to incorporate these skills into the training of health professionals, highlighting trends such as the inclusion of technological tools, digital literacy, the use of active methodologies, and collaboration between educational institutions and the health sector. Methodology: A documentary review approach was followed, taking into account the main categories that were addressed. The search and analysis was based on identifying them in scientific documents, with priority given to articles and book chapters, in a period between 2018 and 2022. The bibliographic manager Zotero was used to process the sources, which allowed, in addition to organizing them, to determine the correlation between the metadata and what was intended with this article. Results: The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this process, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges in implementing these competencies. Although significant progress has been made, such as the adoption of digital clinical simulations and problem-based projects, gaps persist in infrastructure, teacher training, and equitable access to technological resources. Furthermore, assessing the digital competencies acquired by students is challenging due to the lack of universal standards. Conclusion: This analysis highlights the need for a comprehensive approach that combines technological innovation, pedagogical updating and strategic collaboration, ensuring that future health professionals are prepared to face the challenges of an increasingly digitalized healthcare system
Digital transformation in medical education: Pedagogical innovations and challenges in the post-COVID-19
Introduction: The digital transformation in medical education has seen significant progress between 2018 and 2022, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This article examines the main trends and challenges in this field. Highlights include the adoption of online learning platforms, virtual simulations, artificial intelligence, gamification, and international collaboration. Methodology: This article used a desk review approach to determine the most frequent trends and challenges in the scientific literature on the topic in question between 2018 and 2022. The study was structured into five key stages, which allowed the organization of the search, analysis, and results preparation process. Results: These innovations ensured the continuity of medical training during the health crisis. They also revealed gaps in infrastructure, teacher training, and equitable access to digital resources. Artificial intelligence and virtual simulations proved to be valuable tools for personalized learning and clinical practice, although their implementation poses ethical and pedagogical challenges. Gamification emerged as a motivating strategy, but its effectiveness depends on careful integration with traditional methods. International collaboration and open educational resources democratized access to knowledge, although inequalities persist that limit their global impact. Conclusion: This analysis underscores the need for a balanced approach that combines technological innovation with comprehensive and equitable medical training, in order to prepare health professionals for the challenges of the future.Keywords: COVID-19, medical education, pedagogical innovation, emerging technologies, digital transformation
Influencing factors and student desertion at a private university in northern Lima
The objective of this research study was to show the influential factors that determine student desertion in a private university in northern Lima. The methodology used is descriptive in scope with a quantitative approach, with a non-experimental cross-sectional design. The population is made up of students belonging to the Business Administration career who dropped out in the period 2019 and 2020. The sample was obtained probabilistically resulting in 134 students, to then collect data concerning the behavior of the research variables with respect to the elements of the socioeconomic, sociological and institutional factors that influence academic retention; also the Likert evaluation scale consisting of 20 questions was used. In addition, the results were analyzed in an orderly manner based on the information obtained for the statistical development of graphs and tables; and thus corroborate the objectives and the hypothesis raised in the research. The reliability valuation obtained according to the statistical use of Cronbach\u27s alpha was 0,716, which means that the instrument has an acceptable reliability valuatio
Scientific fraud: attack on the credibility of science
Introducción: cuando se refiere al término fraude en las investigaciones científicas, se pueden definir 3 modalidades fundamentales de este que van acorde a la búsqueda de estudios que no sean fácilmente rechazados: manipular datos, plagio y la creación de datos inexistentes.Objetivo: describir factores que permitan la detección del fraude científico en la investigación. Métodos: se realizó una revisión de la bibliografía en el mes de diciembre de 2023 a través del acceso a las bases de datos Scopus, PubMed, Dialnet, Scielo, y el gestor de búsquedas Google Scholar versión 2022, con las estrategias: ((fraude) AND (redacción científica)), ((ciencia) AND (plagio)) y ((medicina) AND (inteligencia artificial) AND (fraude científico) AND (plagio) AND (invención de datos)) y sus traducciones a la lengua inglesa, limitada la búsqueda a los últimos 5 años –desde 2019 hasta 2023–. Resultados: unido a la problemática de las revistas depredadoras ha surgido la terminología de revista secuestrada, no es más que aquella que toman artículos, roban nombres de editores, evaluadores o correctores de estilo, y a través de su uso, venden a las distintas páginas webs estudios científicos para su publicación. En la vida real y práctica este fenómeno ocurre por motivación económica. Conclusiones: el fraude en el mundo de la comunicación científica abarca desde los autores, hasta los comités editoriales de las revistas, por lo cual ambos grupos deben instruirse en 2 factores fundamentales, no cometer fraudes y saber detectarlos, para de esta forma acrecentar en términos de credibilidad la ciencia actua
Trends in Digital Competencies and Research Skills in Postgraduate Studies: Bibliometric research
The objective of this study was to perform a bibliometric analysis of digital competencies and research skills in graduate students between 2003 and 2023. To analyze the academic production, the research method was based on bibliometric analysis. A total of 378 publications were selected from Scopus for the study based on their relevance and the keywords in English (Digital AND competencies, research AND skills). The results show that the most significant increase in scientific productivity occurred between 2016 and 2023 (n=341; 90.2%). In addition, the United States was the country with the highest scientific output (10.3%), the main publication sources were Education Sciences and Sustainability Switzerland (n=9 each), while Falloon, G. was the most referenced author (228 citations; 2 papers). Scientific articles accounted for 87% of the total, with 44% being research papers in the social sciences and 15% in computer science. It is concluded that the thematic diversity, authorship, sources and available resources have been progressively advancing with respect to digital competencies and research skills in graduate students. Thus, this bibliometric analysis can serve as a basis for further studies
ICT and digital literacy: challenges and advances in the Mexican education system (part 1)
The implementation of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) course in the Mexican education system has transformed the teaching-learning process since 2022. Its purpose has been to strengthen digital literacy, understood as the ability to interpret, analyse and produce information in digital environments. The digitalisation of education has been driven by government strategies such as the National Development Plan and the Sectoral Education Plan, which have sought to reduce the digital divide and guarantee equal access to technological tools. Throughout the period 2022-2025, education in Mexico has experienced advances and challenges in the integration of ICT. Factors such as teacher training, technological infrastructure and connectivity have been decisive in the success of these programmes. However, inequalities in access to technology have limited their impact in some regions of the country. Despite these obstacles, digital literacy has improved the way in which students process and use information, promoting more critical and participative learning. The use of innovative methodologies, the personalisation of learning through artificial intelligence and the incorporation of digital platforms have allowed education to evolve. However, the consolidation of a digital education system requires continuous efforts in technological investment and teacher training. Digital literacy will continue to be a key competence for the social and professional integration of students in an increasingly digitalised world
Strengthening the Implementation of the One Health Approach in the Americas: Interagency Collaboration, Comprehensive Policies, and Information Exchange
In the 21st century, the One Health approach recognizes the interdependence between human, animal and plant health and environmental conservation. In a globalized world where boundaries are blurring, this approach has become essential to address challenges such as zoonotic diseases, environmental degradation and food security. One Health fosters collaboration between public health, animal health, plant health and environmental conservation. Its implementation requires the cooperation of governments, NGOs, the private sector and civil society. Challenges include the lack of a common data platform and the need for sound legislation. Data collection and scientific evidence are essential, as is consideration of sociological factors in health. Social and technological innovation also play a crucial role. One Health offers the opportunity to comprehensively address public and environmental health issues, seeking a healthier and more equitable world for all specie
