The benefits of applying the lightning talk in child and youth care education
Child and youth care instructors often aspire to prepare students for
unforeseen circumstances in the field, including circumstances that may
require spontaneous advocacy and public speaking skills in various
settings, such as an interdisciplinary case conference or a plan of care
meeting. We suggest that one way of contributing to these goals is the
pedagogy of the lightning talk. A lightning talk can be defined as a short
(three minutes), time-limited, oral presentation on a particular subject
without the use of supporting materials, such as Power Point slides, notes,
an electronic device, or audience engagement, so as to simulate a practice
context that was unexpected and for which the practitioner has no
opportunity to plan or prepare (Jean-Pierre et al., 2020).
In this article, we will share the main lessons
learned from a study that examined the learning experiences and
processes of the pedagogy of the lightning talk at a Canadian metropolitan
university in two child and youth care undergraduate courses.

Floors and Ceilings: Coordination, Coherence and Consistency in the Relationship between Therapeutic Goods Regulation and Consumer Protection
This article examines the tensions between the two Australian regimes that govern the regulation of therapeutic goods: the broad consumer protection regime of the Australian Consumer Law and the more specific regime under the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 (Cth). The authors develop three case studies of therapeutic products (hand sanitisers, vaccines, and medical implants) to illustrate the challenges of consistency and coherence that may arise between the regimes. These challenges arise specifically when one regulatory regime responds to a public health crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Our more general point however is that the regimes should act in a complementary manner, as the floor and ceiling of consumer and patient protection. This requires a coordinated, and dynamic, approach to regulation in order to ensure the relationship between the regimes remains coherent and consistent
Forensic Science
Courts have long accepted expert opinions from forensic scientists to help address questions of law. Forensic science can also contribute to police investigations and humanitarian action. However, the potential also exists for forensic science to be used in ways that have negative impacts, disproportionately affect members of marginalized groups and amplify social inequality. This entry argues that forensic science must be understood in the broader context of justice systems and social processes. It provides an overview of the use of forensic science in criminal justice before exploring areas of increasing forensic potential and important ethical concerns. The entry then discusses the implication of forensic science in the wrongful convictions of innocent persons and examines key themes in critiques of forensic science and its use in the criminal justice sphere. The entry concludes that addressing these complex issues requires informed debate and is a shared responsibility among policy makers, forensic scientists and legal practitioners.</p
A psychosocial investigation of exercise preferences in real and virtual environments
Three studies explored exercise preferences in real-world and virtual environments, and their relationship with social physique anxiety (SPA), social comparison, and self-presentational efficacy (SPE). In Study 1 (N = 230), real-world exercise preferences were explored. Study 2 (N = 228) measured preferences for real-world and virtual reality (VR) exercise, and Study 3 (N = 249) investigated preferences for avatar embodiment and virtual companions within VR. Results revealed that participants who preferred home-based exercise had lower exercise behaviour, more negative fitness-related social comparisons, or lower SPE expectancy and outcome value (Study 1). Individuals with lower exercise behaviour, more negative fitness-related social comparisons, lower SPE expectancy, or higher SPA were also more likely to choose VR than real-world exercise (Study 2). In a VR exercise setting, participants with higher SPA and more negative social comparisons also preferred to embody a non-human and fantasy avatar more than a realistic avatar. A heightened threat of negative social comparison when imagining exercise with a physically superior virtual companion resulted in the strongest preference to embody a fantasy avatar (Study 3). The results suggest that individuals who place high importance on self-presentation and have low belief in their capacity to project an image of competence to others, are more likely to prefer exercise contexts that minimise physique- and fitness-related evaluation. Moreover, VR may afford a less psychosocially threatening context for individuals who feel self-conscious or comparatively inferior to others during exercise
Developer and End-User Perspectives on Addressing Human Aspects in Mobile eHealth Apps
Context: eHealth apps are mobile apps that help in self-management of critical illnesses, provide home-based disease management, and help with personalized care. Users of eHealth apps are naturally very diverse in terms of their human aspects, e.g., their age, gender, emotional reactions to the apps, cognitive style, physical and mental challenges. Unfortunately, many eHealth apps do not take these user differences sufficiently into account, making them ineffective or even unusable. Objective: This paper reports a study from eHealth app stakeholders’ – developers and end-users – perspectives on critical challenges and benefits of better incorporating human aspects into eHealth app development and usage. We also investigate how different human aspects are being addressed by developers, which ones are the most important for different user groups, and which ones are currently missing/poorly handled. Method: A mixed-method approach that integrates qualitative and quantitative research was used for this study. We gathered and analyzed data from 240 online survey responses and 25 detailed interviews within the same study and validated the results. Results: We report key issues encountered in eHealth app design, difficulty in addressing different human aspects, areas requiring further research and practical assistance, and recommend our findings to best address these challenges. We found addressing human aspects throughout the app development life-cycle is beneficial for more effective eHealth apps. Our findings also suggest the need for improved standards and guidelines, better developer-user collaborative culture, and better human aspects education to produce more effective eHealth apps. Conclusion: This paper investigates current approaches used in the eHealth app domain that take into account the human aspects of app users. Probabilistic study of Induced Ordered Linear Fusion Operators for time series forecasting
The aggregation of several predictors in time series forecasting has been used intensely in the last decade in order to construct a better resulting model. Some of the most used alternatives are the ones related to the Induced Ordered Weighted Averaging (IOWA), in which the prediction values are ordered using a secondary vector, often related to the accuracy of the prediction model in the last prediction. Although the time series study has been historically a subject related to statistics and stochastic processes, the random behaviour of the aggregation process is typically not considered. In addition, extensions of aggregation functions with a weaker notion of monotonicity, pre-aggregation functions, are appearing as better alternative for some topics such us classification. In this paper, a pre-aggregation extension of the IOWA operator, the Induced Ordered Linear Fusion (IOLF), is defined as a way to aggregate time series model predictions and its behaviour is studied from a probabilistic point of view. The IOLF operator over random vectors is defined, its properties studied and the relation between some averaging aggregation functions established. The expressions of the optimal weights according to statistical criteria are derived. The advantages and consequences of the use of the IOLF operator are studied, and its behaviour is compared to the usual procedures. Numerical results illustrate its performance on a practical example
