The article describes the Prešeren celebrations organised by Slovene students in Vienna and Graz between 1864 and 1900 and draws attention to Prešeren’s growing importance in the second half of the nineteenth century. If in the 1850s Prešeren was still in competition with Valentin Vodnik, by the end of the nineteenth century his status as the greatest Slovene poet was undisputed. Slovene students in Vienna and Graz were among the first to give precedence to Prešeren over Vodnik. The first event honouring Prešeren’s memory in Vienna took place in 1864. The first such event in Graz was held in 1866. Most Prešeren commemorations in Vienna were organised by the academic society Slovenija (est. 1869), while in Graz it was the student society Triglav (est. 1875) that organised the bulk of these events. The article presents the programmes of individual Prešeren commemorations, listing the prominent figures and representatives of other Slav associations and societies who attended these events, covering the principal emphases of keynote speeches, as well as some reactions to these events. It also draws attention to the relatively uncritical reporting of events of a national character.

In this paper we analyse the creation of the Slovenian Chapel of Our Lady of Brezje in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. and its cultural, political, and religious significance for Slovenians and the Slovenian-American Community. The idea for its creation began with individual initiatives in the mid-1960s. In the late 1960s, these ideas eventually grew into an institutionalized project that transcended ideological differences and brought together a significant part of the Slovenian-American community. The paper reconstructs its development on the basis of the surviving written legacy of its creators and newspaper reports. Special attention is devoted to the analysis of the final form of the chapel - its architectural design, interior decoration and artistic symbolism, and the dedication ceremony in 1971, which brought together people of different beliefs and emphasised on a symbolic level their common identity and belonging to the Slovenian community.V prispevku analiziramo nastanek slovenske Kapele brezjanske Marije Pomagaj v baziliki narodnega svetišča Brezmadežnega spočetja v Washingtonu D. C. in njen kulturni, politični in verski pomen za Slovence in slovensko-ameriško skupnost.

Already a brief survey of the Slovenian publications of the previous century reveals a Slovenian stereotype which is still very much alive today, and which is nothing but a monotonous repetition of the characterisation of Slovenians as diligent, honest, wise, cheerful, friendly, hospitable, hard-working, tidy, steadfast and disciplined, although they constitute a small nation. This self-imposed stereotype was the source of many diverse stereotype images formed of other nations - in particular the neighbouring nations of the Slovenes (like the Germans, Italians, Hungarians, Croats or Jews), which were, as is the rule in such cases, all pejorative, in the same way as the diverse regional stereotypical images of the Slovenes are also pejorative. A special aspect of the concept of "being foreign" is also the attitude adopted towards many artists who were rejected by the patriotic elite in the same way that foreigners and the homeless were, yet who succeeded (possibly for this very reason) in making a name for themselves abroad.V letu Gospodovem 1801, ko so bili turisti še jako redke prikazni - in so bili sploh vsi taki tiči bolj kot turisti v pravem pomenu besede avanturisti -, si je Johann Gottfried Seume sklenil malce pretegniti krake.
