This article aims to give a brief introduction to the weekly supplement of the Ljubljana newspaper Laibacher Tagblatt. The supplement provided readers with cultural, entertaining but also educational content, with a wealth of pictorial material, as indicated in the title Illustrirtes Unterhaltungsblatt. The distinctly German-oriented supplement, which has remained unaddressed in Slovenian historiography, was published with the same content but with a different headline by different newspapers throughout the monarchy. The aim of the paper is primarily to complement the existing nineteenth-century newspaper picture of the then Slovenian territory, while at the same time confirming its embeddedness in the wider European context and, finally, the strong journalistic competence of the Ljubljana publishers of the time.

Although quite a lot had been written about the history of the Centre for Education, Rehabilitation, Inclusion, and Counselling for the Blind and Partially Sighted in Ljubljana(the Centre IRIS), we, as typhlo-pedagogues, did not know much about it. I became interested in the topic because, on the occasion of the centenary of the Institute for the Blind in 2019, only the head of the school, Josip Kobal, and his achievements in the field of the education of the blind were presented. He had worked with the blind for as little as one year. While researching the history of the Centre IRIS, I discovered that Franica Vrhunc had been very much involved in its beginnings. Her efforts in the field of the education of the blind and visually impaired were crucial in the pivotal times during and after World War I when blind Slovenians were transferred from Austrian educational institutions to Ljubljana or the newly established Institute for the Blind there. After the Institute moved to Kočevje, Vrhunc contributed significantly to keeping this institution in Slovenia. She also played a prominent role during World War II when the blind returned to Ljubljana. Her efforts were vital for the education of the blind, and she was the first teacher to consider the question of social securityfor the blind in Slovenia.O zgodovini Centra za izobraževanje, rehabilitacijo, inkluzijo in svetovanje za slepe in slabovidne Ljubljana tiflopedagogi nismo kaj dosti vedeli, čeprav je o njem relativno veliko napisanega.

This paper presents a system for detecting changes in Slovene word usage, enabling the automatic identification of semantic and other shifts across different time periods. We first introduce the system’s technical design and requirements, the methodology for detecting changes, and the graphical user interface, which ensures a user-friendly experience. We then demonstrate how the system can be implemented on the reference corpus of Slovene, Gigafida 2.0, and used to search for and analyse changes in word usage across various time periods. The system’s results are evaluated through a cognitive-linguistic and lexical analysis of the most changed adjectives and nouns, where we examine and categorise word meanings and usages within the detected clusters based on their semantic motivation and representation in dictionaries. Finally, we apply the system to a case study of migration representation in different time periods with manually defined boundaries, which have significantly influenced attitudes toward migration and migrants in Slovenia, thereby testing its applicability for sociolinguistic research. From a linguistic perspective, we observe that the system distinguishes between semantic, syntactic, and other contextually distinct usages, demonstrating its ability to detect both short-term and long-term changes. Furthermore, we observe that the system clearly illustrates the impact of external factors on language and discourse in specific time periods, making it a valuable tool for sociolinguistic analysis.V prispevku prikažemo sistem za zaznavanje sprememb v rabi besed v slovenščini, ki omogoča samodejno zaznavanje pomenskih premikov v različnih časovnih obdobjih. Rezultate sistema evalviramo s pomočjo kognitivno-jezikoslovne in leksikalne analize najbolj spremenjenih pridevnikov in samostalnikov, kjer raziščemo in kategoriziramo pomene in rabe besed v zaznanih gručah glede na njihovo semantično motiviranost in zastopanost v slovarju.

This scientific abstract summarizes a review of the book "Battesimo di fuoco: l\u27incendio del Narodni dom di Trieste e l\u27Europa adriatica nel XX Secolo" (Baptism of Fire: The Burning of Trieste\u27s Narodni Dom and Adriatic Europe in the 20th Century) by Borut Klabjan and Gorazd Bajc, published by Il Mulino in 2023 The book presents a comprehensive historical analysis of Trieste and the Adriatic region from the mid-19th century through the early 20th century, focusing on the burning of the Narodni Dom on July 13, 1920. This event is portrayed as a pivotal moment symbolizing the rise of proto-fascist nationalism and the decline of multicultural coexistence in the region The authors provide a detailed examination of Trieste\u27s transformation from an anonymous imperial periphery to a cosmopolitan urban center, exploring the city\u27s multicultural fabric and the emergence of national identities. The study emphasizes the importance of Trieste as a microcosm for understanding broader historical dynamics in the Adriatic area. The research employs a multifaceted approach, incorporating social, political, and anthropological perspectives. It analyzes the role of media, particularly newspapers, in shaping public opinion and exacerbating national tensions. The book also examines the impact of World War I on Trieste\u27s social fabric and the subsequent rise of Italian nationalism. By contextualizing the Narodni Dom incident within the larger framework of European history, the authors demonstrate how local events in Trieste presaged and reflected wider trends of nationalism and fascism. The work concludes by discussing the long-term consequences of these events on Trieste\u27s Slovene community and the challenges of reconciliation and memory in contemporary Italy

»Kdo seje prepir?«. Soočenje naprednjakov (liberalcev) s katoliško stranjo od ustanovitve Slovenskega društva 1891 do napovedi I. slovenskega katoliškega shoda 189

Following the establishment of the Catholic Political Society in 1890 and the progressive (liberal) Slovenian Society in 1891, the progressive side continued to make accusations against political Catholicism regarding its aspirations for hegemony, its misuse of religion, and its stateless nature. These reproaches became particularly pronounced in the summer of 1891 when an extensive cultural polemic erupted between the Catholic Slovenec and the progressive Slovenski narod and Rodoljub newspapers over the issue of who kept stirring up the ideological and political disputes in Carniola. The polemic was initiated by Slovenec, which accused the progressive side of opposing religion (the claim was untrue, as the progressives were also Catholics) and rejecting the public and thus also political activities of the clergy, whose love for the nation the progressives refused to recognize. The Catholic side claimed it did express it, but unlike the progressive faction, they did not perceive it as absolute, for the absolute belongs solely to God. Consequently, they accused the progressives of causing the resulting dispute. Meanwhile, the progressive side attributed the responsibility for the conflict to the ideological terror and exclusivism of the Catholic Church, which placed religion above the nation and sought to dominate all aspects of political, cultural, and social life. The question of religion and nation became crucial in various substantive forms, and the struggle for ideological supremacy in the country was conducted on this foundation. With the discord in Carniola, political life assumed broader dimensions. Through the cultural struggle, the progressive side embarked on the path of further expression of its ideological and political beliefs.

Since the start of the 19th century, the district office of Celje faced frequent flooding of the river Savinja and its tributaries, caused by snowmelt and heavy rainfall. However, during the first half of the century, the river regulation activities were somewhat inconsistent and slow. After the disastrous flood of 1851, more serious attempts were finally made to regulate the “mountain” river. Nevertheless, until the middle of the 1870s, when the systematic regulation of the river began on a longer stretch between Prihova and Levec, the works were still carried out in a manner similar to that of the pre-March period. Between 1876 and 1893, a significant length of the river was carefully and thoroughly regulated and straightened, giving the impression that there would be no more severe flooding. However, with this project, the river Savinja began to pose a serious threat to Celje; all the materials the river carried accumulated in the city, and by the turn of the century, it often flooded there. A v prvi polovici stoletja so regulacijska dela potekala precej nedosledno in počasi.
