Logistic Regression for Extremely Rare Events: The Case of School Shootings
School shootings are often used in public policy debate as a justification for increased regulation, based on qualitative arguments. However, to date, no effort has been made to find valid qualitative arguments. However, to date, no effort has been made to find valid quantitative evidence for the claims bolstering the regulation recommendations. In defense of this absence of evidence, it is usually argued that the rarity of such events does not allow the employment of quantitative methods. This paper, using a simulation study, shows that, based on the number of shool shootings in the United States and Germany combined, the well-known method of logistic regression can be applied to a case-control study, making it possible to at least test for an association between hypothesized influential variables and the occurrences. Moderate relative risks, explained by an observed variable, would lead to a high power of appropriate test. A moderate number of cases generated by such a variable would suffice to show a significant association
Targeting metabolic rewiring might decrease spread of tumor cells: Mitochondrial tRNA modifications promote cancer metastasis
In a recent study published in Nature, Delaunay and colleagues demonstrate that tRNA modifications in mitochondria have the potential to affect the synthesis of mitochondrial proteins involved in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), which drives the invasive spread of cancer cells. The inhibition of one particular RNA-modifying enzyme was sufficient to prevent the cancer cell invasion and dissemination.
Glycolysis and OXPHOS are two main metabolic pathways that support cancer cell development and progression. While primary tumors preferentially utilize glucose as a source for their energetic requirement (aerobic glycolysis, also known as the Warburg effect that is in general a hallmark of tumor metabolism), less is known about metabolic plasticity required for dissemination of cancer cells from primary tumor sites. Metastasis, which is a multistep process enabling the tumor cells to spread from primary tumors to adjacent and distinct tissues, is responsible for approximately 90% of cancer-related deaths. The metastatic development requires cancer cells to leave the primary tumors and to metabolically adopt to changing microenvironment.

Shadow Banking and the Design of Macroprudential Policy in a Monetary Union
This paper studies the interaction of international shadow banking with monetary and macroprudential policy in a two-country currency union DSGE model. We find evidence that cross-country .financial integration through the shadow banking system is a source of .financial contagion in response to idiosyncratic real and .financial shocks due to harmonization of .financial spheres. The resulting high degree of business cycle synchronization across countries, especially for .financial variables, makes union-wide policy tools more effective. Nevertheless, optimal monetary policy at the union-level is too blunt an instrument to adequately stabilize business cycle downturns and needs to be accompanied by macroprudential regulation. Our welfare analysis reveals that the gains from the availability of country-specific prudential tools vanish with the degree of .financial integration as union-wide macroprudential regulation is able to effectively reduce losses among the union members

The stress history of soil bacteria under organic farming enhances the growth of wheat seedlings
The effects of stress factors associated with climate change and agricultural
management practices on microorganisms are often studied separately, and
it remains to be determined how these factors impact the soil microbiome
and, subsequently, plant growth characteristics. The aim of this study was to
understand how the historical climate and agriculture to which soil microbes
have been exposed can influence the growth characteristics of wheat seedlings
and their associated bacterial communities. We collected soil from organic
and conventional fields with different histories of climate conditions to extract
microbes to inoculate wheat seeds under agar-based cultivation conditions.
Within a growth period of 8 days, we monitored germination rates and time
as well as seedling above-ground biomass and their associated bacterial
communities. The results showed a positive interaction between conventional
farming practices and an ambient climate for faster and higher germination
rates. We demonstrate that soil microbial extracts from organic farming with
experience of the future climate significantly enhanced above-ground biomass
along with the diversity of bacterial communities associated with seedlings
than other treatments. Such findings support the idea that organic agricultural
practices not only mitigate the adverse effects of climate change but also
promote the diversity of seedling-associated bacteria.Gefördert durch den Open-Access-Publikationsfonds der UB Marburg
Does Inter-local Cooperation Reduce the Intensity of Tax Competition? Evidence on Inter-local Industrial Parks in Germany
We ask whether inter-municipal cooperation serve as a platform by which municipalities coor-dinate tax policies and reduce the intensity of tax competition. In this paper, we focus on inter-municipal cooperation in form of inter-local industrial parks. We apply the generalized syn-thetic control method to analyze the causal impact of inter-local industrial parks on municipal tax-setting behavior using data on municipalities from four West-German states between 2000 and 2018. The analysis does not support the notion that inter-local industrial parks constitute a platform used for tax coordination
Worker or Shirker – Who Evades More Taxes? A Real Effort Experiment
With the help of a real effort experiment, we analyze if tax evasion depends on the amount of effort invested to generate income. In three treatments, subjects were either endowed with income or had to work moderately or hard to earn it. In line with prospect theory, subjects evaded more taxes when they worked hard for their income. We find little evidence for the prediction that tax evasion in the endowed treatment is higher than in the moderate work treatment
Optimal Incentives for Patent Challenges in the Pharmaceutical Industry
Since the patent system relies on private litigation for challenging weak patents, and patent settlements might influence the incentives for challenging patents, the question arises whether the antitrust assessment of patent settlements should also consider their impact on the incentives to challenge potentially invalid patents. Patent settlements in the pharmaceutical industry between originator and generic firms have been scrutinized critically by competition authorities for delaying the market entry of generics and therefore harming consumers. In this paper we present a model that analyzes the tradeoff between limiting the delay of generic entry through patent settlements and giving generic firms more incentives for challenging weak patents of the originator firms. We show that allowing patent settlements with a later market entry of generics than the expected market entry under patent litigation can increase consumer welfare under certain conditions. We introduce a policy parameter for determining the optimal additional period for collusion that would maximize consumer welfare and show that the size of this policy parameter depends on the size of the challenging costs, the intensity of competition, and the duration between the generics’ market entry decisions
The Impact of economic globalization on the shadow economy in Egypt
This study examines the economic globalization and the shadow economy nexus in Egypt. Using time series data from 1976 to 2013, the impulse response analysis shows that the response of the shadow economy in Egypt to positive shocks in economic globalization is negative and statistically significant for the first three years following the shock. This finding is obtained by controlling for several intermediary channels in globalization-shadow economy nexus such as education, government spending, industrial production, and labor force participation. Our results show the importance of promoting economic globalization by reducing the costs of doing business and trade in dealing with sizable shadow economy in Egypt
