A Bayesian many-facet Rasch model with Markov modeling for rater severity drift
Fair performance assessment requires consideration of the effects of rater severity on scoring. The many-facet Rasch model (MFRM), an item response theory model that incorporates rater severity parameters, has been widely used for this purpose. Although a typical MFRM assumes that rater severity does not change during the rating process, in actuality rater severity is known to change over time, a phenomenon called rater severity drift. To investigate this drift, several extensions of the MFRM have been proposed that incorporate time-specific rater severity parameters. However, these previous models estimate the severity parameters under the assumption of temporal independence. This introduces inefficiency into the parameter estimation because severities between adjacent time points tend to have temporal dependency in practice. To resolve this problem, we propose a Bayesian extension of the MFRM that incorporates time dependency for the rater severity parameters, based on a Markov modeling approach. The proposed model can improve the estimation accuracy of the time-specific rater severity parameters, resulting in improved estimation accuracy for the other rater parameters and for model fitting. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model through simulation experiments and application to actual data.journal articl
The Amount of Light to Vigorous Physical Activity (Met’s-Hours/Day) in Children with and without Down Syndrome Attending Elementary School in Japan
Children with Down syndrome (DS) have physical characteristics such as hypotonus of the musculature. Therefore, their attainment rate of physical activity guidelines is low, and guidelines alone may not be sufficient in assessing the amount of physical activity in children with DS. Compared with normal children (NC) of the same grade, light physical activity (LPA) must be considered while assessing physical activity of children with DS, owing to muscle hypotonia. This study included 69 children with DS and 68 NC in grades 4–6 attending elementary school in Japan. The measurements for physical characteristics included age, height, weight, and body mass index. Physical activity was measured using a triaxial accelerometer, which indicated physical activity volume. Children with DS had less moderate-to-vigorous physical activity duration (DS: 53.1 min/day, NC: 65.0 min/day; p < 0.001) but significantly longer LPA duration (DS: 376.4 min/day, NC: 287.7 min/day; p < 0.001) than NC. Conversely, the amount of light to vigorous physical activity (Met’s-hours/day) was greater in children with DS (DS: 16.0 Met’s-hours/day, NC: 14.4 Met’s-hours/day; p = 0.037). In children with DS with muscular hypotonia, vigorous physical activity is challenging, but LPA is feasible. Developing and validating educational programs that promote physical activity with intensity level depending on individual’s physical characteristic are warranted.journal articl
東外大農工大電通大で開く3大学協働基礎ゼミ
This article introduces the Inter-University Freshman Seminar, conducted by Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, and the University of Electro-Communications. In each seminar under the program, group members of approximately ten freshmen from the three universities conduct research, perform laboratory experiments, and engage in discussions on a theme under an instructor. Students of different majors, such as language and culture studies, international and area studies, agriculture, science, and engineering, form a group and learn various ways of thinking through collaborating with one another. The Seminar program started from 2016. Six seminars are typically held for 3 days in the summer, and the results of the seminars are reported in a small conference at the end of the summer. Approximately 60 students attend the conference every year. More than 80% of the students highly evaluate the seminar according to a questionnaire conducted after the program. In particular, the opportunity to interact with students from different universities, majors, and school years is highly appreciated by the students.departmental bulletin pape
