A critical analysis of multicultural representations in Portuguese English as a Foreign Language textbooks

    No full text
The number of foreign students in state basic/secondary education (6 to 17 years old) in Portugal has increased in recent years (Oliveira, 2022); thus, the ability to communicate across cultures is essential. In these multicultural/multilingual classrooms, English often plays a crucial role in connecting students. Therefore, the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom is the perfect setting to promote Intercultural Communication (IC) and Intercultural Awareness (ICA; Baker 2015, 2018; Baker & Ishikawa, 2021). As textbooks are central to EFL classrooms (Galloway, 2018), this study analyzes two EFL textbooks developed in Portugal, one for learners in the 3rd cycle (year 7, aged 12-13) and another for learners in secondary education (year 10, aged 15-16). The analysis examined how the most significant foreign groups in Portugal and their corresponding cultures are represented in images and texts compared to the traditional target cultures (e.g., American, British, and other English-speaking cultures) and the local Portuguese culture. The findings indicate that cultural representations connected with the UK and the USA continue to dominate as the primary groups represented. Based on this analysis, this study provides two practical examples of how EFL teachers could adapt textbook activities to further develop learners’ IC/ICA in the classroom. Consequently, from this study, EFL teachers can gain a better understanding of how textbook activities can be adapted to promote learners’ IC and ICA

Pluriliteracies in Higher Education:: Developing English competence for interpreters and translators through a deeper learning episode

    No full text
CLIL practices were widely introduced in Spanish education over twenty years ago (Jover et al., 2024; Otto et al., 2024). Nevertheless, the transition of this methodological innovation to university contexts in Spain seems challenging due to the lack of resources. In this paper, our main aim is to evaluate the potential of applying the principles of CLIL in a university setting, within the framework of a language module through the implementation of a pluriliteracies approach. For that purpose, we present an exploratory didactic proposal in the form of a deeper learning episode for the Language B English 4 (C1) course in a bachelor's degree in Translation and Interpreting at a Spanish online university. While respecting the fundamentals of CLIL, we aim to steer towards pluriliteracies, a more global approach in which learners develop a series of competencies that are key for interpreters and translators. Thus, this project offers a pragmatic example of how a language module can be transformed from a traditional language-led course to a content-based one which is more comprehensive and meaningful. In the learning episode, a series of values, attitudes and key skills such as knowledge and critical understanding begin to emerge (Council of Europe, 2016) through the topic of art and its cultural implications. This, in turn, translates into long-term sustainable curricula aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, target 4.7 (United Nations, 2015). Ultimately, this approach could provide language teachers with new opportunities to redefine their role

In this article, the project "ARTEMÍDIAMUSEU," conceived by the Research Group Academia de Curadoria, is analyzed as a response to the need for an online structure for exhibitions, curatorial-pedagogical activities, and audience communication, aiming to promote and discuss digital arts. The project's goal was to fill existing gaps in Brazilian museum art collections, specifically related to digital arts, by presenting possibilities for preserving these works. Thus, we offer an insight into the digital transformation of the Brazilian museological landscape, indicating museum practices and curatorial methods that can meet digital demands. In this sense, the project focused on the need to integrate digital arts into the local contemporary art scene, promoting reflections on obsolescence, conservation, access, diversity, and inequality in the digital context. Therefore, the "ARTEMÍDIAMUSEU" project examined the role of digital arts in the contemporary Brazilian art system, noting the necessity of organically integrating them into the local art field through conceptual and aesthetic criteria for their understanding and appreciation. &nbsp

A “hidden gem” of European medieval historiography is now available in English.

    No full text
The study of matrimonial negotiations previously characterised by the perception of the Crown Princes as mere objects of negotiation in diplomatic affairs, reveals a different perspective in the light of the Anglo-Aragonese marriage project of 1268-1285. Peter of Aragon and his son Alfonso were indeed central players in these negotiations. The article explores the active role that certain royal heirs play in diplomatic affairs. This new role accompanied the establishment of the principle of succession in the Crown of Aragon in the 13th century, which transformed the figure of the crown prince into an embodiment of the future of the dynasty. His involvement in diplomatic affairs thus enables him to prepare for his future role as king, but also to consider diplomatic actions in the long term of the dynasty, beyond the mere duration of a reign.   Bibliographic references Sources Manuscript sources Barcelone, Archivo de la Corona de Aragón, Cancillería, reg. 34, Pergaminos de Jaime I, Serie general, 2173. SOLDEVILA, Ferran – Pere el Gran. 2 vols. 34, Pergaminos de Jaime I, Serie general, 2173. The Last Letter of Sir Thomas Lemuel Hawke, originalmente publicada em 2015[2].
