Teacher Support, Parental Incarceration, and Low Academic Achievement in Justice- Involved Youth

Just over two million youth under the age of 18 were arrested in2008 (Gottesman & Schwarz, 2011). Many of these youth also haveincarcerated parents (Eddy & Reid, 2003) and there are well documentedlinks between parental incarceration, juvenile delinquency, and lowacademic achievement (Denno, 1990; Dallaire, 2007; Phillips, Burns,Wagner, Kramer, & Robbins, 2002). The following research paperexamines the relation between parental incarceration and low academicachievement among justice-involved youth while also exploring teachersupport as a mechanism for explaining the link between parentalincarceration and low academic achievement. Statistical analysesindicated low academic achievement and a significant relation betweenteacher support and academic achievement in justice-involved youth, although the role of parental incarceration was non-significant. Giventhat justice-involved youth with incarcerated parents are at risk forlower academic success, the potential protective role of teacher supportwarrants future research (Denno, 1990; Dallaire, 2007; Phillips, Burns,Wagner, Kramer, & Robbins, 2002)

Does Insecure Parental Attachment Influence Teenage Unprotected Sex?

Empirical research shows that risky sexual behavior is common in adolescents, and younger teenagers are engaging in unprotected sex. Thefollowing research paper examines the existing literature on the topicsof parent-adolescent relationships as predictors of risky behavior amongadolescents. Prior research has shown a link between insecure parent-adolescentattachment and risky sexual behavior. The current study specificallybuilt on this literature by examining parent-adolescent attachment asa correlate of unprotected sex. Results indicated adolescents who reportedless secure attachments in their relationships with their parents, includinglower trust and communication factors were more likely to engage inunprotected sex. Unprotected sex, sexually transmitted infections, andthe unplanned pregnancies that may result are a main concern for thehealth of adolescents. Future research should extend the findings of thecurrent study by looking specifically at the kind of parent-adolescentcommunication about sexual health that can be most effective in preventingsexual risk taking. Further, schools may be able to reduce unprotectedsex, unplanned pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections by fosteringtrusting communication between teachers, counselors, and students

    Sociological Analysis of GMOs

In this paper, I employ a sociological conceptual framework with a qualitative methodology to interpret the case of GMOs as a way to provide informed discussions regarding the balance of social stability with economic freedoms and personal freedoms. This paper also explains the importance of equal access to knowledge among societies. This topic is important because GMOs are a controversial social issue, and there still needs to be scientific study on the matter. The sociological conceptual framework I employ focuses on a comparison of structural functional and conflict theory interpretations of GMOs. Data covered in this analysis were gathered by database searches and Google searches. I conclude that the conflict perspective is the more efficient way of examining and explaining data on GMO usage when related to personal and economic freedoms

    Fake News

This poster and critical introduction aim to illuminate the ways in which gossip media has bled into news reporting to gain a larger audience. This practice is demonstrated through the explanation of common rhetorical tools employed by gossip media, such as suspicious sources, celebrity ethos, and suspension of disbelief. The consequence of this transference of styles is that audience members may not be able to distinguish between fact and opinion, and therefore may not be able to reach their own conclusions. The discussion continues by illustrating how these methods have translated into news delivery through the use of clickbait on websites and editorialized versions of facts given through talk shows

The Cultural Significance Found in German Expressionism

German Expressionism gained popularity in the 1920s and early 1930s. The films within this movement explored the depths and complexity of the human subconscious. These films also reflected the uniquely Germanic cultural mindset by using recurring character tropes. This paper analyzes six films in their original forms, ranging from the beginning of the movement in the 1920s to the end in the early 1930s. All secondary sources used are dated after the year 2000. The paper includes a summary of each film, along with an emphasis on the similarities and differences found for each archetype. I argue that the monsters repeatedly shown are the symbolic representations of the protagonist’s sexual repressions. I also argue that the female victim was used as a call for a return to chastity. Later in the movement, each role becomes more ambiguous, as the lines between them blur. This adds a level of complexity not seen in the earlier films

The Role of Presentism and Nationalism in the Historiography of the French Revolution From Marxist Interpretation to Conspiracy Theory

oai:measure-ojs-shsu.tdl.org:article/1During the twentieth century, the interpretation and conceptualization of the French Revolution shifted from a traditional Marxist interpretation of the revolution as a class movement to new interpretations focused on irrationality and conspiracy. The people’s fear became the primary justification for a social behavior that revealed an ancestral predator instinct behind modern high ideals of democracy. This essay retraces the evolution of the interpretation of the French Revolution in historiography, focusing on the reasons behind the extraordinary appeal of the conspiracy theory, in particular the role that nationalism and presentism had in influencing and biasing historians’ perspectives. Finally, the essay argues the need for a revision of the French Revolution. Focusing on the practical necessities of the masses of French peasants and the sans-culottes, instead of their foolish credulity, can help historians to reconnect empathically with the past, avoiding the dangerous filter that their anxiety for the present and their political ideology provide
