No full text

BFS-Based Weighted Late Fusion for 3D Object LiDAR Detection in V2X Systems

No full text
International audienceIn urban environments, Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) face various challenges, particularly in dealing with occlusions. This work delves into vehicle-to-everything (V2X) cooperation to enhance AVs' perception in the 3D object detection task. Collaboration combines fields of view from various agents to enable AVs to 'see' through occlusions and detect objects that are either poorly visible or completely outside their range. This enhancement is crucial to ensure safer and more efficient urban navigation. We specifically focus on the late fusion of LiDAR data streams, using a Breadth-First Search (BFS) algorithm to group bounding boxes with high Intersection-over-Union (IoU). The resulting clusters are then fused via a weighted averaging scheme, producing more accurate and robust 3D detections. This BFS-based weighted method is straightforward, computationally efficient, and requires minimal communication overhead, making it well-suited for real-time urban driving scenarios

Advanced numerical modeling is crucial in the development of flexible, slender structures to account for nonlinear phenomena and ensure reliable simulation of their dynamic response. Enhancing wind turbine performance requires significant advancements in various aspects, such as blade design, material selection, and control strategies. This thesis aims to develop a numerical model of an innovative wind turbine with flexible blades to study their behavior during extreme events. The novel contribution of this work is the development of a nonlinear beam model capable of capturing inelastic effects. Specifically, we propose an elastoplastic model for the Reissner beam that reliably simulates the response of wind turbine blades under extreme loading conditions. To model such flexible blades, we investigate the localized plastic behavior of a 2D and 3D geometrically exact beam within the framework of finite rotations, employing the embedded-discontinuity approach (ED-FEM). The model is derived using the Hu-Washizu variational formulation, leading to Euler-Lagrange equations with a set of independent variables. The proposed formulation integrates a strain-rate-sensitive viscoplastic model with isotropic hardening and softening plasticity. Such an advanced dissipation mechanism, based on real material behavior, describes the evolution of plastic hinges into kinematic joints as plastic dissipation progresses, resulting in a gradual decay of strain energy. Additionally, the approach enables the design of plastic hinges with three rotational failure modes. The formulation is particularly relevant for predicting failure mechanisms in flexible multi-body systems. Computational stability in long-term simulations is ensured through energy-conserving numerical integration schemes, mitigating high-frequency oscillations inherent in inelastic responses. In addition, this research explores control strategies to enhance the stability and performance of flexible structures under extreme conditions. The integration of control theory with the Reissner beam model represents a novel approach, particularly through the application of the linear-quadratic regulator (LQR). The control formulation aims to determine an optimal control law by minimizing the cost-to-go functional, which can be tailored to different control strategies. The optimal control problem with state feedback is reduced to solving the differential Riccati equation in matrix form. The proposed numerical model ensures stability and enables optimal control of the multi-body system, driving it toward a desired state. Furthermore, this work extends the port-Hamiltonian (pH) framework to nonlinear flexible structures, leveraging its intrinsic properties of passivity and energy conservation. By formulating the Reissner beam model within the pH structure, this study establishes a modular and physically consistent representation suitable for system interconnection and control. This novel approach systematically enables energy-based control techniques, offering a promising methodology for improving the performance of highly flexible structures. Overall, this research contributes to the fields of nonlinear computational mechanics and control theory by integrating advanced plasticity models, energy-based dissipation mechanisms, and optimal control strategies within a finite element framework for flexible structures. The findings have broad implications for the design and analysis of engineering systems that require precise modeling of nonlinear dynamics and failure mechanisms.

Perception Metrics for Intelligent Vehicles: An Application-Focused Evaluation

No full text
International audienceModern passenger vehicles increasingly rely on video cameras within Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Driving (AD) technologies to perceive their surroundings and make decisions. These perception systems, largely based on machine learning, face typical challenges of data-driven approaches. As their role in safety-critical scenarios grows, uncertainty quantification has gained significant attention to better characterize both the perceived environment and the confidence in these perceptions. Benchmarking these methods from an application point of view becomes crucial for their deployment. In this context, robust metrics are critical to evaluate how well an intelligent vehicle's perception system performs. This paper investigates the relationship between conventional computer vision metrics and those required for ADAS/AD applications, when characterizing perception system from an application point of view. It presents experimental results that reveal alignments and mismatches between standard computer vision measures and the demands of ADAS/AD use cases. Finally, it demonstrates how adopting a unified perspective on metrics can: (1) provide deeper insights into perception system performance, and (2) guide the selection of appropriate evaluation criteria to enhance the deployment of machine learning algorithms in intelligent vehicle perception

No full text
With almost 700 000 estimated cases each year in the United States and Europe, Lyme borreliosis (LB), discovered in 1975, is the most common tick-borne illness in the world. Transmitted by ticks of the genus Ixodes and caused by bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Lyme borreliosis occurs with various symptoms, such as erythema migrans, which is characteristic, whereas others involve blurred clinical features such as fatigue, headaches, arthralgia, and myalgia. The diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis, based on a standard two-tiered serology, is the subject of many debates and controversies, since it relies on an indirect approach which suffers from a low sensitivity depending on the stage of the disease. This study focuses on the CspZ surface protein, expressed by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (also named BbCRASP-2). CspZ plays a role in the immune evasion of Borrelia by interacting with key regulators of the alternative pathway of the human complement system, factor H (FH) and FH-like protein 1 (FHL-1). CspZ was expressed in heterologous system using Escherichia coli, purified using affinity chromatography, and subjected to a thorough biochemical characterization. This included analysis of its oligomeric and aggregation states, three-dimensional structure, function, and stability. Following protein quality validation, and by applying a SELEX process, thirteen unique and highly redundant oligonucleotides have been selected. Aptamers are single-stranded DNA or RNA oligonucleotides that exhibit high selectivity and specificity for their target due to their unique three-dimensional structure. The aptamers have been further characterized using multiple approaches for their binding to (i) CspZ recombinant protein and (ii) CspZ surface protein. The selected aptamers showed KD values from tens of nanomolar to the micromolar range by BLI and SPR. Two aptamers, characterized by flow cytometry and epifluorescence microscopy, were able to specifically recognize Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto. This novel strategy holds promise for the development of an improved diagnosis assay.

RNA-based diagnostic studies in genetics: Review and guidance from a multidisciplinary French network

No full text
International audienceThe widespread use of high-throughput sequencing for genetic diagnosis has led to considerable advances in patient care, but interpretation of the variants identified remains a challenge and geneticists routinely face the question of variants of uncertain significance. The clinical interpretation of genomic variants requires a high level of expertise to ensure appropriate genetic counseling. Assessing the impact of variants on splicing is a key issue in order to determine their pathogenicity as each variant can impact pre-mRNA splicing by disruption of the splicing code. It is for this reason that a diverse group of French molecular and clinical genetics experts from different diagnostic laboratories nationwide was established to discuss splicing issues and elaborate diagnostic recommendations. We describe an update of these recommendations with the aim of highlighting the importance of transcript characterization for variant interpretation and facilitating the diagnostic implementation of transcript studies, an important source of new diagnostics in human genetics

Development of energy management strategies for sustainable microgrid operation using battery storage and renewable integration

No full text
International audienceThis paper introduces an energy management strategy that enhances the utilization of renewable energy sources through the use of battery energy storage, with the goal of promoting sustainable energy use in a microgrid. The optimization problem is formulated to boost the efficiency of energy distribution while reducing costs and environmental impacts, ensuring a reliable energy utilization to meet the variable demand power that occur during the day. The proposed algorithm determines the ideal power output for each component of the microgrid, including the charging power of electric vehicles, while considering grid limitations, variable electricity tariffs, and user needs. The developed algorithms are solved using heuristic algorithms and mixedinteger linear programming, with outcomes compared against two baseline scenarios where energy management strategies depend solely on rule-based calculations. Simulations are executed daily over a year with a one-hour time resolution to ensure a fair comparison among the implemented methods with annual results. The performance of rule-based methods is benchmarked against optimization techniques including Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Differential Evolution (DE), and a hybrid PSO-DE strategy. Simulation results show that when only BESS flexibility is leveraged, cost reductions range from 1.97% to 2.13%. When EV flexibility is also incorporated, cost savings increase substantially-up to 13.22% with MILP. MILP achieves the best performance with minimal computational effort, while hybrid PSO-DE provides a practical compromise between optimization quality and time requirements. The findings reveal a notable improvement in both cost efficiency and environmental advantages when applying the proposed energy management algorithm, underscoring its potential to improve the overall functionality of microgrid systems.</div

Convergence of a semi-explicit scheme for a one dimensional periodic nonlocal eikonal equation modeling dislocation dynamics

No full text
In this paper, we derive a periodic model from a one dimensional nonlocal eikonal equation set on the full space modeling dislocation dynamics. Thanks to a gradient entropy estimate, we show that this periodic model converges toward the initial one when the period goes to infinity. Moreover, we design a semi-explicit numerical scheme for the periodic model that we introduce. We show the well-posedness of the scheme and a discrete gradient entropy inequality. We also prove the convergence of the scheme and we present some numerical experiments

No full text
National audienceObjectivesDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an urgent need for non-invasive, non-radiating techniques to assess lung functionality. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) was then explored, although its use is clinically reserved for soft tissues, such as the liver, whose density is close to that of water (Bensamoun, S.F et al. Magnetic Resonance Imaging 2025;115:110269). The aim of this study was to measure lung stiffness and physiological parameters in smokers.Material and methodThirty smokers (52.0 ± 8.2 years, including 21 women), called for CT lung imaging examinations, were recruited from the radiology department of ACRIM (Compiègne). A gradient echo sequence was performed on a 1.5 T MRI machine (GE) to establish a personalized pulmonary density map. A pneumatic stimulator, positioned on the right lung, generated shear waves at a frequency of 50 Hz, enabling magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) testing with an SE-EPI sequence. Post-processing applied to the phase images then enabled customized mapping of lung stiffness (shear modulus). Finally, physiological parameters (forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC)) were measured using a digital spirometer (Planète Médicale), according to the technical recommendations of the Global Lung Initiative (GLI) (reference standard Quanjer 2012)...ResultsNo emphysema was detected on CT images for all patients. MRE revealed a spatial distribution of pulmonary stiffness, the value of which increased with the number of pack-years. Physiological parameters did not indicate COPD in the cohort studied. Finally, a Spearman correlation analysis highlights a significant association (ρ = 0.64, P < 0.001) between pulmonary stiffness (μ) and physiologicalparameters (FVC, FEV1) as a percentage of predictive value (GLI 2012).ConclusionThis study highlights the potential of MRE to assess, non-invasively and non-radiationally, the functional and physiological properties of the lung. This approach paves the way for closer monitoring of lung pathologies.Key messageSmokers' lungs are characterized by increased rigidity on MRE.This stiffness varies with the level of tobacco consumption.Stiffness measured by MRE is linked to certain physiological parameters of the lung
