No full textInternational audienceEntre l’hiver 1373/1374 et l’hiver 1374/1375, Dèmètrios Kydônès, le principal conseiller (mésazôn) de l’empereur Jean V Palaiologos, quitta Constantinople et séjourna sur l’île de Lesbos. Grâce au réexamen de certains de ses textes, notamment ses lettres, cet article vise à proposer une nouvelle interprétation de ce séjour et plus précisément des raisons qui poussèrent Kydônès à se rendre auprès du seigneur de Mytilène Francesco Ier Gattilusio. L’analyse en trois étapes du séjour en question (début des frictions entre Kydônès et Jean V, séjour de Kydônès à Lesbos, retour de Kydônès à Constantinople) permet de mettre en lumière le rôle important que joua la dimension financière dans cette affaire, mais aussi de reconsidérer la relation entre Kydônès et Jean V selon une nouvelle perspective qui participe de la déconstruction de l’image traditionnellement négative de cet empereur

Don’t You Have to Nomadise to Be a Nomad? The Ambivalence and Misunderstandings of Kazakh Pastoral Nomadism
No full textInternational audienceAfter the independence of Kazakhstan in 1991, the Kazakhs emphasized their nomadic heritage as the basis of their national identity. Nonetheless, they remain influenced by negative representations of nomadism, and have difficulty combining pastoralism and modernity. In the 19th and 20th centuries, debates on sedentarization showed all the ambivalence of the Russian and Kazakh positions on the topic. In the 1930s, forced sedentarization was a side effect of collectivization, which led to a tragic famine that killed a third of the Kazakh population. Following independence, the patrimonialization of nomadism focused on some ancillary emblems, such as the yurt or the horse. For instance, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan compete to appropriate the Central Asian equestrian game of goat-pulling, misinterpreted as a “nomadic game.” This patrimonialization of nomadism neglects its essential feature, residential mobility, and, by ignoring actual nomadic practices, it definitively relegates nomadism to the past. However, ethnographic field studies, such as the one I carried out in south-eastern Kazakhstan, show that mobile pastoralism is still practiced today

Variational Benchmarks for Quantum Many-Body Problems
No full textInternational audienceThe continued development of novel many-body approaches to ground-state problems in physics and chemistry calls for a consistent way to assess its overall progress. Here we introduce a metric of variational accuracy, the V-score, obtained from the variational energy and its variance. We provide the most extensive curated dataset of variational calculations of many-body quantum systems to date, identifying cases where state-of-the-art numerical approaches show limited accuracy, and novel algorithms or computational platforms, such as quantum computing, could provide improved accuracy. The V-score can be used as a metric to assess the progress of quantum variational methods towards quantum advantage for ground-state problems, especially in regimes where classical verifiability is impossible
