Matériaux pour l’étude du plurilinguisme en contexte ottoman. Le cas de Dosithée II de Jérusalem

    No full text
International audienceThe Patriarch of Jerusalem, Dositheos II (1669-1707), had no classical education and was largely self-taught. Yet, he is known for his important work as an author and editor and for his many exchanges with people of different backgrounds. In his various activities, his “own language”, namely Greek, was certainly the one he used most often, but it was not the only one. Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, Romanian and Georgian were also part of his linguistic landscape. On the other hand, he possessed no knowledge of Latin or other Western languages. Based on Dositheos’ own account, taken from his History of the Patriarchs of Jerusalem (Bucharest 1715 [1722]), this study seeks not only to examine Dositheos’ multilingualism, but also to understand the authority he granted to the various languages, both learned and vernacular, with which he was confronted. More generally, the aim is to ask what paths a man like Dositheos might have taken to gain a place in the Republic of Letters

Experiencing Environmental Changes in Inner Mongolia (China) : Pastoralism and Ritual Adaptation

    No full text
International audienceOver the last few years, the pastoralists of Hulun Buir, a vast pastoral area situated in Inner Mongolia, China, have experienced important environmental changes which resulted in climate instability and severe droughts. In turn, these changes have had a significant impact on people’s pastoral and religious activities, notably rituals dedicated to oboo cairns. During oboo worship, the reciprocal exchange between pastoralists and their natural environment is supposed to symbolically ensure the fertility of the herds, green pastures and abundant rain. However, the growth of the mining industry, the degradation of pasturelands, pollution and droughts have brought about a new discourse and caused local populations to adapt their oboo rituals. What do oboo rituals ultimately tell us about pastoral practices and environmental issues in contemporary Inner Mongolia? Based on data collected among the pastoralists of Hulun Buir between 2011 and 2024, this presentation will explore how and why oboo local rituals lie at the intersection of pastoral knowledge, spirituality and adaptation to climate change

A convergence result for a local planning problem for mean field games and rigorous proof of a Freidlin-Ventchel-type Large Deviations Principle for the 1+1 KPZ equation

We prove the convergence of a viscous approximation to an one dimensional local mean field type planning problem with singular initial and terminal measures. Then we use this result to give a rigorous proof to a Freidlin-Ventchel-type Large Deviations Principle for the height of the 1 + 1 KPZ equation

Common DNA sequence variation influences epigenetic aging in African populations

    No full text
International audienceAging is associated with genome-wide changes in DNA methylation in humans, facilitating the development of epigenetic age prediction models. However, most of these models have been trained primarily on European-ancestry individuals, and none account for the impact of methylation quantitative trait loci (meQTL). To address these gaps, we analyzed the relationships between age, genotype, and CpG methylation in 3 understudied populations: central African Baka (n = 35), southern African ‡Khomani San (n = 52), and southern African Himba (n = 51). We find that published prediction methods yield higher mean errors in these cohorts compared to European-ancestry individuals, and find that unaccounted-for DNA sequence variation may be a significant factor underlying this loss of accuracy. We leverage information about the associations between DNA genotype and CpG methylation to develop an age predictor that is minimally influenced by meQTL, and show that this model remains accurate across a broad range of genetic backgrounds. Intriguingly, we also find that the older individuals and those exhibiting relatively lower epigenetic age acceleration in our cohorts tend to carry more epigenetic age-reducing genetic variants, suggesting a novel mechanism by which heritable factors can influence longevity

"Ils servent aujourd’hui à griller l’orge" Les multiples vies et usages des kurbeis de Solon

    No full text
International audienceThe Kurbeis of Solon are one of the monuments of early Greece which were displayed throughout antiquity, with an often changing audience, and, more rarely, form. From the “first scene” on the Acropolis to the so-called codification of the end of the 5th century, these inscribed pillars also had many different functions. Trying to restore their actual uses at different moments, we shall underline the votive and ideological dimension of the kurbeis and to downplay the documentary function of this monument

: What media coverage of Carlos Ghosn's arrest tells us about journalistic practices in Japan

    No full text
International audienceIt's November 19, 2018. Within a few hours, images of Japanese police boarding Carlos Ghosn's private plane, having just arrived at Tokyo's Haneda airport, went around the world. These images herald the downfall of the man who, for over fifteen years, headed one of the world's largest automotive groups. However, they do not show Carlos Ghosn in person. In fact, the video shows the inspectors boarding the plane and closing the window shutters, without any glimpse of the main suspect. In this way, the scene is more suggestive, engaging the viewer's imagination. This staging raises a number of questions, which we'll use as a starting point for our reflection.

Competition between d-wave superconductivity and magnetism in uniaxially strained Sr2RuO4

    No full text
International audienceThe pairing symmetry of Sr2RuO4 is a long-standing fundamental question in the physics of superconducting materials with strong electronic correlations. We use the functional renormalization group to investigate the behavior of superconductivity under uniaxial strain in a two-dimensional realistic model of Sr2RuO4 obtained with density functional theory and incorporating the effect of spinorbit coupling. We find a dominant d(x2) -(y2) superconductor mostly hosted by the dxy-orbital, with no other closely competing superconducting state. Within this framework, we reproduce the experimentally observed enhancement of the critical temperature under strain and propose a simple mechanism driven by the density of states to explain our findings. We also investigate the competition between superconductivity and spin-density wave ordering as a function of interaction strength. By comparing theory and experiment, we discuss constraints on a possible degenerate partner of the d(x2) -(y2) superconducting state
