    No full text
International audiencePierre Tiollais, a French physician-biologist, died on August 5, 2024, at 89. He is celebrated for cloning and sequencing the hepatitis B virus (HBV) genome and developing one of the first recombinant HBV vaccines. Professor at the Pasteur Institute and the University Paris VII (now University Paris Cité), Pierre Tiollais has played a key role in the application of molecular biology and genetic engineering in medical research, notably in the fight against HBV and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). His work has helped saving millions of lives through vaccination campaigns. Pierre Tiollais was also renowned for his benevolent mentorship and commitment to the scientific community.

La Chinese Knowledge and Poetry Medieval Library

    No full text

Introduction. From Third Gender to Trans and Queer People in Muslim Societies

    No full text
International audienceThe figure of the 'third gender' , is not a 'Western phenomenon' but is present in many Muslim societies from the Medinese mukhannath period until today. While there is a long history of significant roles provided to effeminate men, the opposite -the process of recognition of masculinized females -is much rarer. All the effeminate figures share similar characteristics, such as being young and beardless, and practicing music, singing, and dancing, especially in ceremonies, where they become objects of desire for men. Today, cross-dressing is revisited by Arab choreographers and performing artists, and new medical advances provide third gender individuals the possibility to take hormones and/or undergo gender affirmation surgery to become trans

CTSEG: A segment picture quantum impurity solver based on TRIQS

    No full text
International audienceElectron-electron interactions are a key determinant of the electrical and optical response properties in solid-state materials. Yet, the many-electron problem is outstandingly difficult, and can be tackled analytically only when interactions are weak, or in rare exactly solvable cases. One of the popular numerical schemes for addressing strongly interacting systems is dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT; Georges et al., 1996). In DMFT, the many-body problem formulated on a crystal lattice is self-consistently mapped onto a single atom (or impurity) immersed in an effective environment (or bath). The remaining computational task is then the solution of the impurity problem, which can be carried out through various quantum Monte Carlo algorithms (Gull et al., 2011). Here, we present an implementation of the continous time hybridization expansion algorithm in the segment picture (CTSEG) based on TRIQS, a comprehensive library for the numerical investigation of interacting quantum systems (Parcollet et al., 2015)

Reviews and syntheses: Review of proxies for low-oxygen paleoceanographic reconstructions

    No full text
International audienceA growing body of observations has revealed rapid changes in both the total inventory and the distribution of marine oxygen over the latter half of the 20th century, leading to increased interest in extending oxygenation records into the past. The use of paleo-oxygen proxies has the potential to extend the spatial and temporal range of current records, constrain pre-anthropogenic baselines, provide datasets necessary to test climate models under different boundary conditions, and ultimately understand how ocean oxygenation responds beyond decadal-scale changes. This review seeks to summarize the current state of knowledge about proxies for reconstructing Cenozoic marine oxygen: sedimentary features, sedimentary redox-sensitive trace elements and isotopes, biomarkers, nitrogen isotopes, foraminiferal trace elements, foraminiferal assemblages, foraminiferal morphometrics, and benthic foraminiferal carbon isotope gradients. Taking stock of each proxy reveals some common limitations as the majority of proxies functions best at low-oxygen concentrations, and many reflect multiple environmental drivers. We also highlight recent breakthroughs in geochemistry and proxy approaches to constraining pelagic (in addition to benthic) oxygenation that are rapidly advancing the field. In light of both the emergence of new proxies and the persistent multiple driver problem, the need for multi-proxy approaches and data storage and sharing that adhere to the principles of findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (FAIR) is emphasized. Continued refinements of proxy approaches and both proxy–proxy and proxy–model comparisons are likely to support the growing needs of both oceanographers and paleoceanographers interested in paleo-oxygenation records

The equilibrium price of bubble assets

    No full text
Considering a simple economy, we derive a new Hamilton-Jacobi equation which is satisfied by the value of a "bubble" asset. We then show, by providing a rigorous mathematical analysis of this equation, that a unique non-zero stable solution exists under certain assumptions. The economic interpretation of this result is that, if the bubble asset can produce more stable returns than fiat money, agents protect themselves from hazardous situations through the bubble asset, thus forming a bubble's consensus value. Our mathematical analysis uses different ideas coming from the study of semi-linear elliptic equations
