New Religion Adherents: An Overview of Anglophone Census and Survey Data
General estimates of the extent of the New Religions phenomenon vary considerably. The two basic quantitative questions in this area are: How many groups? And, How many people? These questions are not as simple as they might at first appear. A more fundamental question involves classification: Where does one draw the line between alternative and non-alternative religions? What one finds when one actually tries to determine where to draw such a line is that the difference between “mainstream” and “alternative” is a matter of degree rather than a sharplydefined distinction
Jensine Andresen (ed.): Religion in Mind. Cognitive Perspectives On Religious Belief, Ritual, and Experience
This volume considers the broader framework of “cognition and culture” with a programmatic agenda. Most of its articles result from an international symposium on “Cognitive Science and the Study of Religious Experience: A Working Symposium on Theory and Method”, held at the University of Vermont in 1998. Concise and profound outlines of relevant theories of P. Boyer, d’Aquili/ Newberg, D. Sperber and V.S. Ramanchandra who are absent from the volume as authors are delivered in Andresen’s Introduction to illustrate the historical spread of cognitive sciences within the science of religion. She concludes by asking for new and diversified methodologies for studying religion
Peter Harvey: An Introduction to Buddhist Ethics. Foundations, Values and Issues.

Andrew P. Porter: Elementary Monotheism I: Exposure, Limitation and Need; Elementary Monotheism II: Action and Language in Historical Religion
The reflections of Andrew P. Porter about basic aspects of monotheism have been published in two volumes. Each volume is like a walk through a system of ideas, realizing and grasping fundamental elements and conditions of monotheism. While the first path leads through philosophical, theological and psychological fields, the second is comparable to a journey through different places, events and activities around monotheistic themes in the history of religions and their dealings within religious and philosophical texts. The two paths cross each other frequently throughout both volumes. Although the perspective is obviously wider, Porter’s reasoning is focussed on the western, occidental traditions and their different roots in and influences from other cultures, religions and patterns of thought
Bernhard Scheid: Der eine und einzige Weg der Götter. Yoshida Kanetomo und die Erfindung des Shinto
Although the Shinto religion is the major indigenous religious tradition of Japan it is remarkable that, compared with Buddhism, there is no very great flood of publications on the subject. The earliest period of Japanese culture, including Shinto, has been addressed with some good studies and translations. Similarly the modern period from the mid-nineteenth century onwards has also attracted top-quality research, partly because of the political relevance. Yet this leaves many centuries of history for which first-class studies of Shinto in western languages are simply lacking. The purpose of Bernhard Scheid\u27s study of "Yoshida Shinto" is to help to bridge the gap between the ancient and the modern periods. It is a very original piece of work which makes a most significant contribution to the overall history of Shinto
The Politics of The Courage to Be
Paul Tillich is arguably the most important exponent of the theology of culture. As a religious socialist Tillich felt compelled to leave National Socialist Germany in 1933 and to emigrate to the United States where he established himself as a major figure in American theology. Among his most influential works is the book The Courage to Be, which presents an existentialist Ground of Being theology as a basis upon which to address the concerns of people living in a period increasingly characterised by anxiety. The purpose of this article is to examine The Courage to Be against the background of the growth of conservative cultural and political trends in the United States. Originally presented as four lectures in the Autumn of 1950 at Yale University, The Courage to Be was expanded into a six chapter book and published in 1952. The article comparatively examines certain observations Tillich makes about Marxism and Soviet and American national life in the pre-revised lectures of1950 and the published texts of 1952 against the background of the ascendancy of McCarthyism in the United States. We propose that in revising the original lectures Tillich becomes more critical of Marxism and the Soviet Union and, in certain respects, less critical of the United States; it is our view that such revisions represent concessions to the anti-left wing mood of the period. In undertaking such a contextualised comparative textual analysis, we seek to show that the scholar of religion and culture does not work in isolation but in creative tension with his or her context and that context is a fundamentally important factor in contributing to the shaping of ideas and texts
Paulos Huang: Lao Zi, The Book and the Man
The author offers a critical study of the person and the work of Lao Zi, taking issue with the relatively sceptical positions usually adopted by most influential western scholars including Waley, Creel, Needham, Kaltenmark and Graham. International Chinese scholars such as Fung Yulan and D.C. Lau are also in this camp, the latter having doubted the very existence of Lao Zi. To have one\u27s historical existence doubted is of course the ultimate acolade for the hagiographically privileged. But eventually there is a return to common sense. The sober historian of religions usually settles down into the view that Abraham existed, Mose existed, Jesus existed, Confucius existed and the Buddha existed. These figures were not figments of the imagination, even if much which has been said about that them is. The question is, is the present work by Paulos Huang the required swing of the pendulum in this case? He goes to considerable trouble to differentiate between that which the ancient Chinese historian Sima Qian himself seemed to be sure about, and those points about which he himself expressed uncertainty. That Lao Zi existed, and that he was responsible for a tradition of sayings which was eventually edited as the Dao De Jing , seems difficult to dispute unless all the old books are simply to be thrown aside as evidence
