Shakespeare and Accentism
No full textThis edited collection explores the consequences of accentism—an under-researched issue that intersects with racism and classism—in the Shakespeare industry across languages and cultures, past and present. It adopts a transmedia and transhistorical approach to a subject that has been dominated by the study of Original Pronunciation. Yet the OP project avoids linguistically foreign characters such as Othello and Caliban because of the additional complications their aberrant speech poses to the reconstruction process. It also evades discussion of contemporary, global practices and, underpinning the enterprise, is the search for an aural purity that arguably never existed. By contrast, Shakespeare and Accentism attends to foreign speech patterns in both the early modern and post-modern periods, including Indian, East Asian, and South African, and explores how accents operate as metasigns reinforcing ethno-racial stereotypes and social hierarchies

Truth is the Only Client: The Official Investigation of the Murder of John F. Kennedy
No full textA new documentary exploring the unvarnished facts of the Kennedy Assassination, as told by the Warren Commission investigators, credible experts, and by the first person accounts of people close to the events of the day. Without relying on conjecture or speculation, this film lays out the actual evidence discovered in the case, and in so doing dispels the myths and conspiracy theories that have perpetuated through the decades. It is the story of an actual investigation of a murder, performed by real people in Cold War America. This will show the staff investigators as they were, and are, rather than the caricatures that have been painted by some “researchers” of incompetent lawyers or compromised Commissioners under the thumb of a new President with nefarious motives These were honorable men, devoted to their government service, dedicated to finding the truth. This film explores what these men thought at the time of the investigation and what their views are today. It offers a thorough examination of the hard evidence of the case, updated with the benefit of the passage of time. It is a unique view into the workings of history and, perhaps, one of the only remaining opportunities for people to judge for themselves the effectiveness and conclusions of The Warren Commission. This work may be the last chance to probe those individuals who conducted a long and exhaustive investigation
“What If I Aint Ate in 2 Days, Why the Hell Would I Want You to Poke Into My Arm”: A Critical Cultural Analysis of Testing Makes Us Stronger
No full textDespite medical advancements, Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (BMSM) are the groupmost disproportionately impacted by HIV in the United States. Recent figures estimate one in two Black MSM will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime. From 2011 to 2015, the Center for Disease Control ran Testing Makes Us Stronger, a health communication campaign designed to increase rates of HIV testing in the Black MSM community. Past studies document the campaign’s visibility, but fail to explain the continuous rise of HIV transmissions within the Black MSM community. Previous research on Testing Makes Us Stronger analyzes exposure to the campaign, but fails to capture the experiences and opinions of its target audience. Using the Culture-Centered Approach, this study conducted 20 semi-structured phone interviews to unveil how culture and systemic inequities influence rates of HIV transmission in the Black MSM community. Thematic analysis found three key themes: (1) trans invisibility, (2) call for holistic approaches, and (3) importance of local organizations. Findings from the study suggest HIV campaigns would benefit from working in tandem with other organizations designed to combat systemic inequalities
Welcoming in Dancers from All Traditions: De-centering Modern/Contemporary Dance in Choreography Class
No full textAbstract: Most college-level choreography classes are grounded in the aesthetics, techniques, and practices of modern/post-modern/contemporary dance (hereafter referred to as contemporary dance). Even if the department’s technique classes reflect a broader range of dance traditions, choreography classes that center contemporary dance speak loudly to our students about whose traditions are valued most. Dancers with backgrounds in other forms, such as hip-hop, salsa, kathak, etc. must learn a new set of movement principles and values to enter into classes on dance-making. To create a dance field that welcomes all dance forms and does not lift contemporary dance and ballet above the rest, I argue that we should de-center contemporary dance in our choreography curricula. In this article, I share my experiences working to de-center contemporary dance in my choreography courses over the past two years and discuss why I see this as a matter of racial equity
