Lyric-Based Classification of Music Genres Using Hand-Crafted Features
No full textThe classification of music genres has been studied using various auditory, linguistic, and metadata features. Classification using linguistic features typically results in lower accuracy than classifiers built with auditory features. In this paper, we hand-craft features unused in previous lyrical classifiers such as rhyme density, readability, and the occurrence of profanity. We use these features to train traditional machine learning models for lyrical classification across nine popular music genres and compare their performance. The features that contribute the most towards this classification problem, and the genres that are easiest to predict, are identified. The experiments are conducted on a set of over 20,000 lyrics. A final accuracy of 56.14% was achieved when predicting across the nine genres, improving upon accuracies obtained in previous studies
La funzione della nostalgia creativa
No full textDrawing from the corpus of the twenty-four authors anthologised in Poeti italiani nati negli anni ’80 e ’90 (Latiano, Interno Poesia, 2019-2020), this work aims to give an account of the recurring themes and topics of these texts. The first two volumes of this anthology reveal, in spite of a rich formal differentiation and a variety of stylistic solutions, a strong concordance of themes and desire: thematically, these works betray an anxiety concerning the problem of the disintegration of the world, yet they also share in a desire for salvation, achieved by reconstituting oneself in an individual or communal space, through the specific means of poetry. Thus, the images of collapse and epidemic prevail, variously resolved in urban and peripheral contexts, equally opposed by repeated attempts of nostoi and a strong craving for light. This horizontal tendency seems to be the link through which to weave a broader generational discourse which transcends individual authors. A key for interpreting this discourse will be offered, in the second part of the paper, in the function of creative nostalgia.
A partire dal corpus dei ventiquattro autori presenti nell’antologia Poeti italiani nati negli anni ’80 e ’90 (Latiano, Interno Poesia, 2019-2020), questo lavoro si propone di focalizzare e mettere in relazione i nodi tematici ricorrenti nei testi. I primi due volumi di quest’antologia rivelano infatti, a dispetto di una ricca differenziazione formale e di soluzioni stilistiche, una forte concordanza tematica e desiderativa, laddove il tema riguarda soprattutto il problema della disgregazione del mondo e il desiderio la capacità di salvarsene, ricostituendosi in uno spazio individuale o comunitario grazie ai mezzi specifici del gesto poetico stesso. Prevalgono allora le immagini del crollo e dell’epidemia, variamente risolte in contesti urbani e periferici, a cui si oppongono altrettanto variamente ripetuti tentativi di nostoi e una fortissima e dilagante ansia di luce. Questa propensione orizzontale sembra a tutti gli effetti la maglia stretta su cui intessere un discorso generazionale più largamente inteso, un discorso che trascenda le singole istanze individuali. Una chiave di lettura per questo discorso verrà individuata, nella seconda parte dell’intervento, nella funzione della nostalgia creativa
Investigating the factors behind differences in ‘lay’ and ‘expert’ medical knowledge in the context of fever treatment in Yangon, Myanmar.
No full textGreater social research aiming to understand the qualitative experiences of patients and healthcare workers is necessary in order to create informed health policies. A key aspect of this is acknowledging and uncovering how \u27lay\u27 and \u27expert\u27 medical knowledge interact and co-exist. This paper uses the context of fever treatment in Yangon, Myanmar, to investigate the factors behind differences between \u27lay\u27 and \u27expert\u27 medical knowledge.
This cross-sectional study conducts a deductive thematic analysis of secondary qualitative data from both patients and medical doctors using an adapted form of Amartya Sen’s capability approach framework. Results uncover how education, socially rooted collective knowledge and unregulated pharmacies drive differences between \u27lay\u27 and \u27expert\u27 medical knowledge.
The results of this paper highlight the interdisciplinary nature of health, meaning health systems should be considered within their sociological, political and economic contexts. Appreciating the complexity of how health is understood by populations can allow policymakers to form a stronger health system by creating contextualised policies and health interventions for the general public that cater to the diversity of narratives within health systems and beliefs.
Postgraduate Researchers and their Relationship to Teaching: An Initial Exploration of Survey Findings

The aim of this research is to find out more about PGRs and teaching at Warwick, and to provide some insight into their experiences, many of which will have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Scaling Up: The pedagogical legacy of Then & Now
No full textThis reflective article explores the aftermath of the Then & Now project and demonstrates how the Faculty of Arts at the University of Warwick has sought to open up the opportunity to a greater number of students whilst simultaneously retaining the key learning elements of the programme. This piece demonstrates the compromises and challenges inherent in ‘scaling up’ a student intervention of this kind, alongside detailing the opportunities for improvement presented by repeating the engagement opportunity with a new group of students. The article also considers some of the difficulties presented by running the programme during the 2020/21 Covid-19 pandemic and reflects on learning opportunities and future plans.

This purported paradox of fundamentalist politics gaining power in secular states is all the more challenging to analyse in the context of both the consolidation and re-articulation of neoliberalism as an ideology and framework for organising economy and society in the era of late capitalism and its successive crises. Specifically, we are interested in exploring the ways in which these transformations within state, society and the economy have affected women’s positions and gender relations. Cloak and Cruentation: Power, (In)Visibility and the Supernatural in the \u27Nibelungenlied\u27
No full textThe Medieval epic poem the ‘Nibelungenlied’ makes use of two supernatural elements. There is a cloak that renders a character invisible, and the phenomenon of cruentation is trial by ordeal, which supposedly reveals who the murderer of a victim is. Although critics have stated the importance of these two elements to the narrative, the questions of how and why these elements are crucial remain under-analysed. This paper seeks to fill this gap in current research by assessing each supernatural phenomenon’s narrative function. I argue that their supernatural qualities are not the only aspects that link them, and that it is their power to alter what is (in)visible that makes them a catalyst for changing socio-cultural power dynamics in the text, ultimately leading to the tragic ending of the poem

No full textThe article proposes to make an assessment of recurring features of Italian contemporary poetry during the first twenty years of the 21st century. Five tendencies are here analysed: 1) the representation of subjectivities different from that of the authorial self; 2) deflation and expansion of the poetic self; 3) short poem; 4) installation poetry; 5) poetry in prose. Among these tendencies the first three will be more thoroughly investigated.
L\u27articolo si propone di fare un bilancio delle caratteristiche ricorrenti nella poesia contemporanea italiana dei primi vent’anni del ventunesimo secolo. Vengono considerate cinque tendenze: 1) rappresentazione di soggettività distinte da quella dell\u27io autoriale; 2) deflazione o espansione dell\u27io poetico; 3) poemetto; 4) poesia installativa; 5) poesia in prosa. Fra queste, nell\u27articolo vengono approfondite in particolare le prime tre tendenze.

La giovane poesia nella Svizzera italiana: Percorsi editoriali e letture critiche
No full textThe article provides a broad overview of the poetry produced in Italian-speaking Switzerland over the past twenty years. The first part presents three channels of poetry dissemination (journals, editorial projects, and literary festivals) both within and outside the Swiss-Italian territory. The second part reflects on some critical readings of Swiss-Italian poetry and addresses the reasons why some forms of poetic writing have appeared later or to a lesser degree within the Swiss territory than they have in Italy, despite the two countries’ proximity. From this analysis, it is argued that the lack of strong counter styles in Swiss-Italian poetry has hindered the development of more mature and diverse forms of poetic expression. In the conclusion, it is argued that the non-use of digital resources for poetry production and dissemination in Italian-speaking Switzerland, as well as an often short-sighted cultural policy, are other important points to address in order to promote dialogue within and beyond the Swiss-Italian border.
L’articolo fornisce una panoramica ampia della poesia prodotta nella Svizzera italiana negli ultimi vent’anni. La prima parte indaga tre principali canali di diffusione (riviste, case editrici, festival letterari) dentro e fuori il territorio della Svizzera italiana. La seconda parte riflette su alcune letture critiche della poesia nella Svizzera italiana e cerca di stabilire le ragioni per cui alcuni tipi di scrittura poetica siano giunti tardi o poco sul territorio svizzero rispetto all’Italia, nonostante la vicinanza tra i due paesi. Da questa analisi, si argomenta che la mancanza di controtendenze forti nella poesia nella Svizzera italiana abbia impedito lo svilupparsi di forme di espressione poetica più mature e diverse. In conclusione, si ritiene che il mancato uso di strumenti digitali per la produzione e la disseminazione della poesia nella Svizzera italiana, oltre che una politica culturale spesso poco lungimirante, siano temi importanti da affrontare per promuovere dialogo dentro e oltre il confine della Svizzera italiana.

The Status of the Artist, Cultural Rights and the 2005 Convention: A tribute to Professor Milena Dragićević Šešić’
Get PDFThis article is written in the spirit of a festschrift, in honour of recently retired Professor Milena Dragićević Šešić. Once Rector of the University of Arts, Belgrade, and the UNESCO Chair in Cultural Policy and Management, Professor Milena’s work and personal charisma have made a European-wide impact on both students and scholars, artists and activists. Her example is one of a university academic who is socially-engaged, politically astute, and who possseses the communication skills that have enabled her to participate in cultural politics at the highest level. Her contribution towards cultural thought and freedom of expression in her own country of Serbia (Yugoslavia until the early 1990s) will offer an important intellectual legacy. The aim of this article is to contribute to the emergence of this legacy by discussing our current policy understanding of artistic freedom in a way that amplifies its intellectual complexity as well as its policy necessity. I argue that cultural policy has struggled to defend, artistic freedom, despite many relevant intellectual resources provided by UNESCO; however, there remains hope in the form of a critical attention to the terms of the 2005 Convention and the historical discourse of culture and development from which it emerged
