Breaking Barriers: Promoting inclusive research culture among PGR engineering students
No full textThe academic community increasingly advocates for a more inclusive research culture, prompting universities to actively foster diversity, equity, and accessibility. This inclusivity is crucial for meaningful participation and recognising diverse perspectives in academia. In response, we organised an interactive seminar and developed a board game for engineering postgraduate research (PGR) students to grasp the concept of inclusive research culture. The seminar facilitated open discussions, allowing students to share experiences and comprehend the significance of a supportive environment. Emphasising inclusivity\u27s role in generating innovative outcomes, the seminar showcased its potential through interdisciplinary collaborations. Based on and modified from ‘Snakes and Ladders,’ the accompanying board game enhanced understanding by providing an immersive experience that encouraged teamwork and creative problem-solving. This approach effectively promotes an inclusive research culture among engineering PGR students, imparting insights into the importance of a diverse and supportive research environment. By embracing inclusivity, universities unlock the research community\u27s full potential, inspiring future generations to contribute significantly to diverse research endeavours
Five Adjectives to Convey What Good Research Culture Looks Like: A tool for effective and efficient communication
No full textResearch culture has become a growing concern for higher education institutions (HEIs) and the broader UK research community in recent years, highlighting the need for a shared language to cultivate a communal understanding essential for collective approaches to complex challenges. With this in mind, at the University of Warwick, we have devised a concise formulation – the five-adjective summary - \u27happy\u27, \u27productive\u27, \u27creative\u27, \u27sound\u27, \u27open’ - to encapsulate our goals for a positive research culture. This summary can be delivered in one to two minutes to describe what good research looks like, and to introduce most topics covered by research culture. It can also act as a starting point for strategic and deeper discussion, by unpacking each adjective as required. This reflection discusses our streamlined definition of research culture based on the Royal Society\u27s definition, our five-adjective summary of good research culture, the rationale behind its development and underlines the importance of adaptability to navigate changing perceptions of research culture
Unleashing the Power of Postdocs: Improving the postdoctoral experience to enable improvements in research culture
No full textPostdoctoral researchers are at the heart of university research. This highly motivated and talented group are ambitious and passionate about research and keen to develop an academic career. Very few achieve this call and far too many end up suffering with mental health issues, feeling used by a system where others benefit most from their efforts and that by not becoming an academic they have somehow failed.
For the academy to thrive and diversify this culture has to change, and evidence is clear that investing in the training, culture and opportunities for postdoctoral researchers will yield extraordinary rewards, not only for those researchers, but for their academic managers, departments and institutions. Training, inclusion and the opportunity to develop independence are all highly valued by postdoctoral researchers but there is also a need for research funders to look at how they can be major facilitators of change

In these critical times we are determined to raise our voices against the reactionary, fundamentalist, and anti-woman forces in this dangerous situation. No full textIl presente studio si concentra sulle raccolte in versi e in prosa pubblicate da Marco Giovenale tra il 2020 e il 2023. Nonostante l’autore, dopo il “cambio di paradigma” della fine degli anni ’00, si sia spostato sempre più in direzione di una scrittura non-assertiva e postpoetica, anche la linea postlirica e assertiva continua a occupare un certo spazio nel suo lavoro. Obiettivo del saggio sarà quindi, da una parte, tracciare una panoramica critica della produzione dell’autore negli anni ‘20 nuovo millennio, attraverso l’analisi di un campione testuale per ognuno dei libri presi in considerazione; dall’altra osservare come si declini, anche all’interno della sua attività più recente, la biforcazione tra due linee di scrittura che caratterizza da tempo l’opera dell’autore, tenendo in considerazione soprattutto il ruolo del significante, l’effetto comico e il progetto di reinquadramento della produzione postlirica.
This essay focuses on the books published by Marco Giovenale between 2020 and 2023. Although the author, since the late \u2700s, has increasingly moved in the direction of a non-assertive and postpoetic writing, the post-lyric and assertive field continues to occupy a certain space in his work. The aim of this essay will therefore be, on the one hand, to outline a critical overview of the author\u27s production in the 20s of the new millennium, through the analysis of a textual sample for each of the books; on the other hand, we observe how, even within his most recent activity, the bifurcation between two fields of writing that has long characterized the author\u27s work is expressed, considering above all the role of the signifier, the comic effect and the project of reframing the post-lyric production

Get PDFWhile the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état against the government of Salvador Allende in Chile invites to reflect on past and current experiences of solidarity between Latin America and Europe, the present contribution seeks to foreground the rather overlooked international solidarity efforts of and with the indigenous Mapuche. As a result of their forced exile to Europe after 1973, Mapuche activists began to organise themselves as a diasporic community in Europe and to form a transnational advocacy network in support of their people. This contribution aims to showcase how international solidarity of and with the Mapuche in Europe evolved over time, how they relate to non-indigenous, Chilean solidarity networks, and which underlying Mapuche notions of solidarity they reactivate in order to weave their transnational advocacy network
Chilean Muralism in Exile: On Solidarity and Transnational Memory
Get PDFFifty years after the coup d`état in Chile, cities such as Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Leeds, Milan, Belgrade, Los Angeles, and Chicago, still display traces of Chilean exile on the walls of cultural centres, universities, theatres and other buildings. These are the remains of hundreds of murals, painted by brigades created by Chileans in exile to encourage their host countries to show solidarity with their resistance to the Pinochet dictatorship. The complex experience of Chilean exile and its long-lasting and intergenerational repercussions have only slowly been integrated into research and memory practices. This article examines three case studies of Chilean murals in exile as atypical forms of testimonial sources, with the aim of gaining insights into the multi-layered network of actors behind them, in particular into the testimonies of Chilean exiles and actors of international solidarity. It also explores the memorial dimensions of postephemeral murals and how these can function as carriers of a collective, transnational memory of Chilean exile

Get PDFSpanish people can detect my Mexican accent as soon as I open my mouth, and it’s interesting to see their reactions during my travels through that country. Most Spaniards are kind and curious. But I do remember a taxi driver who convivially told me that, to be sure, Spain had done horrible things to Mexico, but that I should still think of Spain like a father — a drunk and abusive father, in his words, but a father nonetheless.
One can take such remarks about colonialism in stride and with good humor when they come from a taxi driver. But it is difficult to swallow similar arguments when they come from historians like Fernando Cervantes, author of Conquistadores: A New History of Spanish Discovery and Conquest
