Explorations Into the Synergy Between Faith, Health, and Health-Care Among Black Baptists, 2012

    Get PDF
Background: U.S. health disparities are documented by race/ethnic, socioeconomic, gender, and geographic demographics. Since federal health record keeping began, regardless of other demographic factors, Black people continue to record statistical significant disparities. The complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) domain of mind-body medicine provides a method and language to assess the metaphysical constructs of faith, spirituality and religion and their influence on health and healthcare practices. Explorations into the synergy between faith, health and healthcare among a convenient sample of Black Baptist conventioneers provides an opportunity to better understand if and how faith can be used to enhance the health and wellbeing of Black people

The Role of Theology in A Post-Modern World, 2011

    No full text
One can hardly begin a discussion of any area of theology without acknowledging that what we call theology has a parent called religion. Sometimes to understand the child, the offspring, we have to first of all try to understand the parent. To discuss ‘The Role of Theology in a Post-Modern World’ one must venture into a discussion of the role religion has played and continues to play in the development of humanity. This, in turn, will help us understand the role of theology; especially in relation to one of humanity’s primary endeavors, that has not changed throughout the ages and is still at the heart of human quest in this post-modern age

Neither Did They Arrive Empty: Leadership and Social Action: African-American Experience, 2007

Slaves were brought to America primarily to fulfill the economic void lor labor. However, they did not come empty. Among the enslaved were priests, and when priests are present so is religion. African-Americans were systematically denied not only social equality but also ordinary legal rights of American citizens. Black-Holiness Pentecostalism is not a denomination but rather a movement encompassing several bodies supporting belief in a spirit baptism, accompanied by various signs including speaking in tongues, with historic roots embracing but not always restricted to both a Wesleyan Armenian and completed work of Calvary orientation. They, too, believe that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is a post-conversionary experience, normative and available to all Christians to be a more effective witness in carrying out the Great Commission (Matt. 28:19)
