Life - Worth A Possibility of Education
No full textI work with currently and formerly incarcerated women to assist in helping them regain their lives. I focus on offering specialized support and education for women whose pathways to prison or jail are often tied to domestic violence or substance abuse. Through education and wellness programs during and after incarceration, I provide the tools needed for them to become powerful change agents for themselves, their communities, and their children. Many aspects of my life occurring throughout my life have drawn me to this work that I do every day with passion and with a deep sense of purpose
Growth Mindset to Support Equity and Excellence in Linguistically Diverse Elementary Classrooms
Get PDFResearch suggests cognitive advantages of speaking more than one language – for example, cognitive flexibility, higher order thinking skills, and better problem solving. We posit that strengths associated with bilingualism suggest potential for a growth mindset and productive struggle that could support mathematical problem solving. This article investigates mathematics teaching and learning practices designed to uncover and support a growth mindset and productive struggle in linguistically diverse elementary classrooms – with an eye toward equity and excellence. We share and discuss lessons learned from educational literature, professional practice, and evidence from a small-scale growth mindset action research project in a linguistically diverse first-grade classroom
What’s in a Name? Absolute Value & Algebraic Identity
Get PDFAlthough many well-intentioned organizations and institutions emphasize the importance of antiracism and social justice in mathematics education, there remains a lack of practitioner-oriented curricular materials exhibiting how these long-overdue shifts can manifest in classrooms. This article describes how modifying a project on absolute value functions in an Algebra 2 course was able to incorporate Learning for Justice social justice standards and weave in identity work, while supporting students’ mathematical learning in a manner consonant with the four essential actions and four key areas identified in TODOS position statements
Designing a Mathematics Teacher Education Course for Equity and Antiracism
Get PDFIn this manuscript, I reflect on the redesign of my graduate elementary mathematics methods course—a redesign necessitated by the pandemic and the shift to online learning that created an opportunity to make equity and antiracism central to the course. I describe my earlier, unsuccessful attempt to add equity as a course topic—an “additive approach” to antiracist pedagogy (Kishimoto, 2018). I then reflect on my Fall 2020 iteration of the course, in which changes to course goals, content, and assessments allowed for an integrated approach to antiracism and equity, working towards TODOS’ (2020a) call to prioritize antiracism in mathematics teaching and learning

Perceptions of East Coast Migrant Head Start Programs and Multilingual Families\u27 Communication
Get PDFMultilingual families experience unique barriers as they seek to partner with schools to educate their children. This research study explored parents’ perceptions of access to multilingual early childhood programs and their perception of the communication process between multiple stakeholders of an early childhood program in their rural multilingual community. Data were collected from forty-two families in a rural multilingual community in North Carolina with and without children in an early childhood Head Start Program, using surveys and focus group interviews in Spanish and English. Results revealed that most families believe they have access to the Head Start program and a positive perception of the communication processes. However, barriers related to enrollment and cultural and linguistic issues persist. This study has implications for multilingual families’ access to early childhood programs, such as Head Start programs, and their children’s future career and life prospects
