    Demand side management using the internet of energy based on LoRaWAN technology

    The smart grid, as a communication network, allows numerous connected devices such as sensors, relays and actuators to interact and cooperate with each other. An Internet-based solution for electricity that provides bidirectional flow of information and power is internet of energy (IoE) which is an extension of smart grid concept. A large number of connected devices and the huge amount of data generated by IoE and issues related to data transmission, process and storage, force IoE to be integrated by cloud computing. Furthermore, in order to enhance the performance and reduce the volume of transmitted data and process information in an acceptable time, fog computing is suggested as a layer between IoE layer and cloud layer. This layer is used as a local processing level that leads to reduction in data transmissions to the cloud. So, it can save energy consumption used by IoE devices to transmit data into cloud because of a long range, low power, wide area and low bit rate wireless telecommunication system which is called LoRaWAN. All devices in fog domain are connected by long range wide area network (LoRa) into a smart gateway.  The gateway which bridges fog domain and cloud, is introduced for scheduling devices/appliances by creating a priority queue which can perform demand side management dynamically. The queue is affected by not only the consumer importance but also the consumer policies and the status of energy resources

    The Ability of implementing Cloud Computing in Higher Education - KRG

    Cloud computing is a new technology. CC is an online service can store and retrieve information, without the requirement for physical access to the files on hard drives. The information is available on a system, server where it can be accessed by clients when it’s needed. Lack of the ICT infrastructure of universities of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) can use  this new technology, because of economical advantages, enhanced data managements, better maintenance, high performance, improve availability and accessibility therefore achieving an easy maintenance  of organizational  institutes. The aim of this research is to find the ability and possibility to implement the cloud computing in higher education of the KRG. This research will help the universities to start establishing a cloud computing in their services. A survey has been conducted to evaluate the CC services that have been applied to KRG universities have by using cloud computing services. The results showed that the most of KRG universities are using SaaS. MHE-KRG universities and institutions are confronting many challenges and concerns in term of security, user privacy, lack of integration with current systems, and data and documents ownership

    Human gait identification using Kinect sensor

    This study investigates a novel three-dimension gait recognition approach based on skeleton representation of motion by the cheap consumer level camera Kinect sensor. In this work, a new exemplification of human gait signature is proposed using the spatio-temporal variations in relative angles among various skeletal joints and changing of measured distance between limbs and land. These measurements are computed during one gait cycle. Further, we have created our own dataset based on Kinect sensor and extract two sets of dynamic features. Nearest Neighbors and Linear Discriminant Classifier (LDC) are used for classification. The results of the experiments show the proposed approach as an effective and human gait recognizer in comparison with current Kinect-based gait recognition methods

    The plastic waste problem- a pledge for volunteer activities

    In this explorative study, an overview of up to date data on plastic waste is given. Different methods of handling the plastic waste problem are described. The focus lies on volunteering.In order to get a picture of the plastic waste problem, a non-exhaustive overview is given of recent scientific and policy reports in paragraph 2. In paragraph 3 the guidelines of the UNEP and ISWA report on Global Waste Management is described. Other sources emphasize the importance of additional measurements. Those are e.g. self-organising volunteer activities in (higher-) education and volunteer cleaning up activities, respectively described in paragraph 4 and 5. In a small sample investigation to the motives for taken part in cleaning-up activities, undertaken in the Netherlands, Europe, two hypotheses were tested ‘cleaning-up is a token activity’ and ‘taking part in cleaning-up activities promotes environmental-friendly behaviour’.In paragraph 6 the method of the inquiry is described and in paragraph 7 we see from there some evidence for an expanding involvement with pro-environmental behaviour as a result from beach cleaning-up activities. In paragraph 8 we conclude that the need for involvement with the plastic waste problem of all and on all levels, is necessary. The contribution of volunteer activities like self-organizing groups in Universities or cleaning-up projects, seems to be an important factor in behavioural change to tackle the problem of plastic waste

    Chemical Analysis and Growth Inhibitory Effect Of Rosemary Plant on Aspergillus niger

    The use of natural fungicides instead of synthetic ones covers is a present trend in mycological disease control. The quality and food safeties could be preserved by the addition of natural antifungal agents as essential oils. The aim of the present study was to assess the antifungal activity of certain essential oil against the genus of Aspergillus The oil of the aerial parts of Rosemary plant that collected from Sulaimani city was analyzed by using gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The antifungal activity of Rosemary plant extract against Aspergillus niger was assessed by using agar dilution method. The results showed identification of 17 compounds, with 80.62% of Benzene, 1-methoxy-4- (1-propenyl), 6.85% 1,3,6-Octatriene, 3,7-dimethyl-, (E), 5.16% 1,3,6-Octatriene, 3,7- dimethyl and 2.83% D-Limonene constitute the highest percentage of essential oil. The result of investigation the antifungal effect of Rosemary plant extraction dilutions showed that the essential oil has significant inhibitory effect on growth of Aspergillus niger in 10 %, 12%, 14%, 16%, 18%, 20%, 22%, 24%, 26%, and 28% dilutions with the average inhibitory growth percentage 25.91%, 25.60%, 28.96%, 28.96%, 30.18%, 32.31%, 28.04%, 28.65%, 31.40% and 31.70% respectively. Large percentage antifungal activities of Rosemary oil are related with Benzene, 1-methoxy-4-(1-propenyl) as the main compound. In conclusion, the essential oils exhibited a potential inhibition activity against toxic fungi and many invitro and invivo studies are requested to find more about the antifungal activity of these extracted oils

    Mechanical Behavior of A MEMS Based Capacitive Energy Harvester

    Energy harvesting is defined as a technology that converts the available excess energy in the environment into usable energy for low power consuming electronics. Past researches on vibration energy harvesting has focused mainly on the use of magnets or piezoelectric materials as the basis of energy transduction. This paper presents a new design for extracting energy using an electrostatic capacitive energy harvester which can be considered as a combination of charge constrained and voltage constrain cycles. In previous analyses, the constant charge and constant voltage operation were studied separately, but in this work both of these operations have been studied in a combination with each other. In this paper, the variable capacitor is formed by an out of plane gap closing structure. In order to investigate the mechanical behaviour of the capacitive energy harvester, a rectangular micro plate is considered with geometrical and material properties. Due to the nonlinearity and low displacement amplitude that result from electrostatic force, energy can be generated. In order to study the primer factors for increasing generated energy, geometrical parameters of the system have been changed. Time history of the shuttle mass and micro-plate undergone vibration are illustrated. It must be noted that after several cycle vibration of the plate, it reaches to stability and regular cycles

    In the development of 3G devices, all elements of multimedia (text, image, audio, and video) are becoming crucial choice for communication. The secured system in 3G devices has become an issue of importance, on which lot of research is going on. The traditional cryptosystem like DES, AES, and RSA do not able to meet with the properties of the new generation of digital mobile devices. This paper presents an implementation of video protection of fully encrypted using Elliptic Curve   Cryptography (ECC) on a mobile device. The Android platform is used for this purpose.  The results refer that the two important criteria of video mobile encryption: the short computation time required and high confidentially are provided

    Successful Data Science Projects: Lessons Learned from Kaggle Competition

    The workflow from data understanding to deployment of an analytical model of a data science project begins at framing the problem at hand, a task that is typically business-oriented and requires human-to-human interaction. However, the next three steps: data understanding, feature extraction, and model building that come next in the pipeline are the key to successful data science projects. Failing to fully understand the requirements of each of these three steps can negatively affect the performance of the proposed system. Hence, the current study tries to answer the following question “What are the requirements of a successful data science project?” To answer this question, we will use the solution that we built to measure the relevance of local search results of small online e-businesses and submitted to Kaggle data science platform to shed light on why our solution did not achieve a top position among other competitors. Evaluation of the design that we submitted to the competition is going to be carried out in the spirit of the three winning submissions. Our results revealed that well-performed data preprocessing, well-defined features, and model ensembling are critical for building successful data science projects. Such a clarification provides insight into specific aspects of model design to help others including Kagglers avoid possible mistakes while approaching their data science projects

    Enhancing Fire Resistance of Steel Bridge Girders Using External Fire Insulation

    Fire in steel bridges can be a significant hazard; however, no provisions are specified for fire resistance of bridge structural members in current codes and standards. This paper presents results from numerical analysis on the response of steel bridge girders under fire conditions. A finite element model is developed to evaluate the fire resistance of typical steel girders in bridges using fire insulation with different configurations and thicknesses. The first configuration comprised of applying fire insulation on the web plate of the steel girder, while in the second configuration, the steel section is insulated. Results from numerical analysis indicate that fire resistance and failure mode in steel bridge girders is highly influenced by the insulation configuration and thickness. Applying 25.4mm fire insulation on web plate of steel bridge can increase the fire resistance up to 53 minutes, while applying same insulation thickness on steel section can result in 110 minutes fire resistance

    Automatic water level control using LabVIEW

    Shortage in water supply is one of the major issues that some major cities throughout the world are facing nowadays. Due to not having full day water supply, households will have to efficiently manage the problem of water shortage and overcome the crises. This paper presents a system that indicates and controls the level of water in overhead tanks. Ultra-sonic sensors are employed to detect the level of the water between predefined minimum and maximum levels. LabVIEW which is a graphical programming language that uses a dataflow model is used to program microcontroller board Arduino UNO that is an interface between the software and the rest of the circuit components. From measured results good performance and accurate results are achieved. &nbsp
