Get PDFThe selection of photographs conveys scenes from a particular day which has become a distilled moment of joy in retrospect. The light and shadows from the oak trees across the summer baked grass became fascinating to watch, as the figures become secondary and swallowed by the reminder of branches. Photographs and other works of visual art should not always require words to translate their meaning to viewers. But here in the works that I have provided for the Burgmann Journal provide a slice into the mental processes and inspirational occupations at that given point in my experience of time
The Emergence and Function of the Australian Intelligence Community
Get PDFThe Australian Intelligence Community (AIC) emerged in the Commonwealth executive branch of state throughout the 20th century, methodically reconfiguring in response to royal commission and government review recommendations. The AIC’s structure continues to be altered today in the face of ‘an increasingly complex security environment’. Such reconfiguration has been necessary in order to create a more effective and accountable AIC that serves the executive government by protecting Australian security and safety interests. Today, the AIC agencies work within a largely legislative framework, informed by liberal ends and values that balance individual liberty and privacy against communal security and peace. The AIC consists of six agencies today; the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), the Australian Secret Intelligence Organisation (ASIS), the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), the Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO), the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO) and lastly the Office of National Assessments (ONA). This essay will briefly outline the development of the AIC over the last 100 years, and then discuss in detail why it emerged in the way that it did. Particular emphasis will be placed on the changes that occurred as a result of the Royal Commission on Intelligence and Security (1974-1977), the Protective Security Review (1979) and the Royal Commission on Australia’s Security and Intelligence Agencies (1984). The essay will then proceed to analyse the ways in which the AIC has, and hasn’t, served the nation. It will discuss arguments made in Royal Commissions, reviews, criminal trials and wider media, and critically evaluate reasons for and against the utility of the AIC

The role of Adolf Hitler in the Holocaust
No full textThe debate regarding Adolf Hitler’s role in the implementation of the Holocaust emerged in the latter half of the twentieth century following the Nuremburg trials. This was largely a bimodal scholarship which focused on either Hitler’s own intentions or the initiatives of local officials within the chaotic hierarchy of Nazi Germany. While these two approaches are often presented in antithesis, this essay aims to demonstrate otherwise by acknowledging the strengths and limitations of each argument. Hitler’s anti-Semitism is widely recognised as genuine, serving as a reflection of long-standing beliefs that can be traced back to Hitler’s experiences during and after the First World War. Once Hitler gained power, however, the path between his hatred for Jewish people and the implementation of the Holocaust is more obscure. While Hitler certainly significantly contributed to the creation of an anti-Semitic environment, an executive decision, or ‘Führer order’, for the genocide of the Jewish people is next to impossible to trace, which is reflected in the historical debate shifting to decisions made by local officials. These choices were reactionary in nature, serving as improvisations and adaptations made by mid-ranking officials in the occupied territories in reaction to conditions on the ground. These insidious manoeuvres marked the beginnings of this systemic genocide, stemming from the very environment established by Hitler himself
Tight budget, big dreams: Using university course credit in the creation of an online Kriol language course for English speakers
Get PDFKriol is an Australian contact language spoken in Australia’s north, and it is the first language of the community of Ngukurr in southern Arnhem Land. For the past two and a half years, I have been using university course credit to create an online language course teaching Kriol to English speakers at the behest of the Ngukurr Language Centre. This paper conveys the challenges that arise in undertaking a large-scale project of this sort as an undergraduate student. It also summarises the advantages and disadvantages of teaching a language online, and provides examples of the tools and techniques available for this purpose. It is hoped that this paper will encourage other undergraduate students and the staff who support them to engage in large-scale projects and pursue similar opportunities during their coursewor
