Der tolldreiste Versuch einer „kriminellen“ Verführung, oder: Wie unbedarft man sein muss, um einen Goethe-Bewunderer zur Lektüre eines Krimi¬nalromans von Friedrich Ani bewegen zu wollen
Gottfried Benn and the formation of two German states in 1949: selected aspects of his complex attitude to the state as such and to West Germany
The paper is mainly concerned with Gottfried Benn’s complex attitude to the state and history. By means of introductory prefigurations, such as existential tensions related to the conflict between Protestant ethics and modern aesthetics, there emerges Benn’s difficult and complex relation to the state as such, seen as a product of history, and to its particular examples, starting from the Second Reich until the initial phase of West Germany. Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy, and in particular the philosophy of art, is of great importance in this context. This issue is discussed using Benn’s key works such as Roman des Phänotyp or Doppelleben. Benn’s literary and life self-creations played a vital role in his relations with the political reality and the state, which is discussed at the end of this analysis. His ambivalent relation to early West Germany has a strong biographical basis, i.e. his involvement with the history of the Nazi Germany on the one hand, and on the other – the period of his literary fame at the end of his life. The paper is mainly concerned with Gottfried Benn’s complex attitude to the state and history. What remains? The afterlife of GDR literature in the research
The title of the story What Remains by Christa Wolf denotes one of the main topics of the present discussion about German literature after 1989. The article presents the new questions (e.g. one or two German literature(s)? What does ‘GDR literature‘ mean? Is it a ‘special case’?) and changing conditions of the study of East German literature. A few new historical works discussing German literature since 1945, mainly since the reunification, and a few theoretical approaches (e.g. GDR literature as a chronotope and as regional literature) are presented. The title of the story What Remains by Christa Wolf denotes one of the main topics of the present discussion about German literature after 1989. Images of Germany. Perspectives from Imagology and Cultural History
Like all those pictures of other countries, which are treated in imagological research, images of Germany are also complex, mediated by social history and historical experience, misunderstanding, misrepresentation and ideological assumptions. On the whole, these images represent the expectations and experiences of the observer even as they can truly be connected with the history, or social and cultural affairs, of the population. Thus, these images appear to be reversible figures that are simultaneously true and the products of subjective perception.Like all those pictures of other countries, which are treated in imagological research, images of Germany are also complex, mediated by social history and historical experience, misunderstanding, misrepresentation and ideological assumptions. We are bisected. Discovering the GDR in West German Literature before 1989
West German literature has turned its back to the existence of the second German state until the 1980s. Only a few years before the fall of the Berlin wall, three writers started to make the GDR a subject of narration or poetry: Botho Strauß, Peter Schneider and Martin Walser. In different ways, yet unanimously, they complain about the division of Germany dealing with its impact on everyday life and private feelings.West German literature has turned its back to the existence of the second German state until the 1980s. Ludwig Wachler as a historian of the German and European national literature
The article revolves around the research activity of the historian Ludwig Wachler, professor at the University of Wrocław in the years 1815-1838. In his work, Wachler represents the early German patriotism, for which he was subject to police repression. He is shown primarily as a historian of national literature. The article revolves around the research activity of the historian Ludwig Wachler, professor at the University of Wrocław in the years 1815-1838. Ein Spiel mit Stereotypen? Zu Matthias Nawrats Roman Die vielen Tode unseres Opas Jurek (2015)
Matthias Nawrat, born in 1979 in Opole, has been living in Germany since 1989. In his latest novel Die vielen Tode unseres Opas Jurek (2015) the author returns to the country of his birth in order to recount one century of the Polish as well as of the Polish-German history. The ghastly-comical family-story uses mobile parts of stage scenery from a picaresque novel – in the centre stands a man (grandfather Jurek) who, in spite of all the atrocities of the 20th century, won’t let others prevent him from leading a joyful life. While staging the story of a struggling artist, he refers back to stereotypes, obviously with the intention of strenghtening the existing models. This contribution poses a question if the game has been successful.Matthias Nawrat, born in 1979 in Opole, has been living in Germany since 1989.
