The practice of life writing, seemingly vastly anthropocentric, can be perceived as a valuable testimony to human-animal relations. The history of women’s autobiographical writing in particular demonstrates shows how necessary it is for an autobiographer to include other, often non-human perspectives in a narrative. Drawing on the theory of autobiography as well as the conceptions of Éric Baratay and Erica Fudge, I argue that personal narratives can be seen as a practice of leaving behind traces of both human and non-human experience. Taking the autobiographies by Colette, Virginia Woolf and Zofia Nałkowska as representative examples, I try to shed light on the possible ways of finding those traces and revealing how animal lives are entangled with the lives of the autobiographers. Such a reading mode enables to recognize non-human animals as agents and subjects that are strongly interrelated with but not dependent on humans.  The article discusses the possibility of reading women’s autobiographies with the main focus on the lives non-human animals. Drawing on the theory of autobiography and the field of animal studies I argue that it is feasible to extract valid and accurate accounts of numerous human-animal relationships or find traces of various animal experience whereby animals can be recognized as agents and subjects

„Proszę, by wszystkim moim domownikom wypłacono gaże i pensje…” – odprawa dla służby i spłata długów Armanda de Bourbon, księcia de Conti po jego śmierci

    No full text
The article discusses the testamentary bequests and the attached instructions which Armand de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, cousin of Louis XIV younger brother of the Great Condé, made in view of the approaching death for the benefit of people of his household. In his young years, he rebelled against his father, who had intended him for the clergy, and then against the king, becoming one of the most active leaders of the Fronde. Ultimately, he became reconciled with the monarch, which he achieved through marriage with the niece of Cardinal Mazarin, Anna Maria Martinozzi. Having associated himself with the Jansenists, he adopted the principles of moral rigour. In his last will, the prince apologized to the people around him for the grievous example he had set as a rebel, and provided for a part of his servants in separate bequests. The documents in question are concerned chiefly with those domestics of the prince who upon his death had to leave his household, as well as with the various settlements made by the widow during the months following her husband’s departure. The accounts reveal how Armand de Bourbon remunerated his servants and how he, as well as his wife, sought to ensure further welfare of people once employed at their court and had to be dismissed upon the prince’s death. This involved paying outstanding compensation for their service and settlements of potential debts. This may be inferred to have been due to changes in the organization of the household, but also interpreted as an act for the peace of prince’s soul and due execution of his last will, in which he called for all his liabilities to be settled. The article presents the settlements and household accounts following the death of Armand de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, as well as testamentary and pre-mortem bequests the prince made to provide for his servants. Surviving documents show the decision taken by the executors of the last will, while the books reveal ambiguous, sometimes astonishing variation of amounts designated as wages and lifetime stipends for the prince’s domestics, as well as attest to the concern of the testator himself and his wife for the fates of people engaged in the household

This approach is exemplified in Jewish reconstructionism, which effected a veritable revolution in that respect. Ceny niewolników w „Historia Lausiaca” autorstwa Palladiusza z Helenopolis

The paper analyses the reports regarding slave prices which may be found in “Historia Lausiaca” written by Palladius, bishop of Bithynian Helenopolis. Two accounts concerning the prices of slaves were analyzed in detail. The figures provided by the antique author show a substantial spread, as prices vary from 3 (in Italy at the beginning of the fifth century) to 20 solidii per slave in a certain Egyptian city (probably in Alexandria) in the mid-fourth century. The author, comparing the data with other late antique accounts, attempts to establish the probative value of Palladius’s account on the slave prices in the early fifth century, and thus assess the usefulness of hagiographic literature in studies on late Roman and early Byzantine economy. The paper draws on the accounts by Palladius, bishop of Bithynian Helenopolis, to gather insights into slave prices. The figures contained in the source vary to a great extent (from 3 to 20 solidii for a slave). The author verifies the information against other late antique and early Byzantine accounts regarding slave prices. &nbsp

Czytanie (z) roślin. Obraz i słowo w twórczości Urszuli Zajączkowskiej

In „Reading (from) Plants”, the oeuvre of Urszula Zajączkowska, specifically her films and poetry is examined within an eco-posthuman framework. The objective is to demonstrate how the poet-botanist expands the scientific idiom to include other methods of speaking about reality, using various, mutually complementary media and arriving at a coherent artistic project, in which image and words simultaneously overcome dichotomous divisions. Zajączkowska’s gesture of surmounting the scholarly discourse enables the relationships between human and non-human protagonists in her work to function on an equality basis; the hierarchies are invalidated and as a result the reader/viewer may look at the world with greater attention and lucidity of mind. The aim of this paper in to show the work of Urszula Zajączkowska in the light of eco-posthuman notions. The analysis will focus on film and poetry which, according to the Warsaw botanist, become complementary tools of the scientific narrative,  and serve to describe relationships between humans and other organisms
