Perceptual maps reveal rampant convergence in butterfly wing patterns across the Neotropics
In 1879, Fritz Müller formulated the first mathematical evolutionary model to explain mutualistic mimicry between coexisting defended prey. Yet, whether local mimicry drives the structure of aposematic prey signals across their entire geographic distribution remains untested because the perception of pattern similarity has never been assessed at large spatial scale. Here, we implement a citizen science survey to map, throughout the Neotropics, variation in the wing patterns of heliconiine butterflies (Nymphalidae) as perceived by vertebrate cognitive systems. We show that despite a continuum of perceived similarity in wing patterns at the continental scale, the convergence of sympatric species into discrete mimicry rings is ubiquitous among local communities. These results expand Müller’s historical predictions by quantifying the rampant convergence of prey signals across an entire continent

International audienceThis article highlights the adaptability of a researcher conducting sensitive fieldwork on Caribbean memories of the Algerian War. It explains how the interview corpus was compiled, sheds light on the ethical and socio-political issues surrounding the investigation, highlights the complementary nature of oral and written sources in writing the history of West Indians in the Algerian War, and illustrates the methods used to publicise these oral archives.Cet article met en évidence le bricolage dont fait usage une chercheuse qui mène une enquête en terrain sensible sur les mémoires antillaises de la guerre d’Algérie. Il explicite les modalités de constitution du corpus d’entretien, il éclaire les enjeux éthiques et sociopolitiques autour de l’enquête, il souligne également la complémentarité des sources orales et écrites pour écrire l’histoire des Antillais dans la guerre d’Algérie et illustre les modalités de valorisation de ces archives orales
Contrasting Patterns of Connectivity Between Populations of Euphotic and Mesophotic Hydroids in Reunion Island Support the Deep Reef Refuge Hypothesis
International audienceIn the context of coral reef decline, mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs, 30–150 m) offer hope for the recovery of degraded euphotic reefs. The Deep Reef Refuge Hypothesis (DRRH) postulates the potential of mesophotic reefs to reseed euphotic reefs. This hypothesis needs to be further tested by estimating connectivity along the depth gradient. Mesophotic data are lacking worldwide, particularly in the southwestern Indian Ocean (SWIO). Here, using a total of 2218 samples collected at depths ranging from 10 to 103 m, we estimated the connectivity of 7 hydroid species sampled at euphotic, upper, and lower mesophotic depths around Reunion Island using a multi‐species comparative framework. Population genetic analyses using 8–17 microsatellite markers per species (80 markers in total) as well as Bayesian inference were performed to estimate population structure and contemporary migration rates to highlight connectivity patterns and directionality of gene flow between depths. The results revealed three main genetic patterns depending on the species: a horizontal stepping stone pattern between areas around the island, a vertical stepping stone pattern between adjacent depths, and a quasi‐panmictic pattern. Each species showed some specificity within these patterns, but overall, at least 4 of the 7 species support the assumption of vertical connectivity from the Deep Reef Refuge Hypothesis, highlighting the importance of studying multiple species. The existence of vertical connectivity between euphotic and mesophotic depths in the southwestern Indian Ocean confirms the importance of mesophotic coral ecosystems for conservation efforts and our global understanding of coral reef ecosystem dynamics
Burden of cervical cancer in Martinique, 2012–2021
International audienceObjective: To provide an updated overview of the burden and temporal trends in incidence, mortality and survival of cervical cancer in a French Caribbean region between 2012 and 2021.Methods: This retrospective study included all cases of cervical cancer diagnosed and registered by the Martinique Population-Based Cancer Registry between 2012 and 2021. Data were recorded strictly according to international standards set by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, French and European Network of Cancer Registries. A descriptive epidemiological analysis and a survival analysis for invasive cases were performed. We calculated world age-standardized incidence and mortality rates, using the WHO standard world population. Overall survival, with a 95 % confidence interval, was calculated as the time from diagnosis to death from any cause. Patients were censored at the date of last follow-up or at the cut-off date of December 31, 2023. We used the Kaplan-Meier product limit method to estimate overall survival at 1, 3, 5 and 10 years.Results: Over the study period, 1196 in situ tumors and 202 invasive cases were diagnosed. 45.0 % of women were aged 65 and over, and 67.3 % received chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Most invasive cases were diagnosed with locally advanced stage (43.1 %) and were squamous cell carcinomas (75.2 %). Trends in world age-standardized incidence and mortality rates were globally constant at 6 per 100,000 and 3 per 100,000 person-years, respectively. Overall survival at 5 years was 51.4 % (44.2 %; 58.1 %), and at 10 years, 41.8 % (33.8 %; 49.6 %).Conclusions: In this retrospective cohort study, data from a qualified cancer registry comprehensively described the burden of cervical cancer in a Caribbean region. These findings are essential for planning, monitoring, and evaluating the ongoing impact of the national vaccination, screening, and treatment measures required to drastically contribute to the elimination of cervical cancer in these particularly high-burden regions
Vache folle, vache sage. Une contre-satire vaccamorphique de la féminité au tournant des XXe-XXIe siècles (Orwell, Haushofer, Sterchi, Boyer Hadjadj)
International audienceZoomorphic satire, at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, took the opposite approach to its usual register. Vaccamorphy, thought as corporeality of cows, no longer mocked women by attributing bovine features to them, but emphasized the quality of bovids in the face of the madness of men. It is a counter-satire in the sense that the subjects compared deviate from their resemblance, and overturn traditional irony, by ennobling femininity. Our five authors thus use a discreet, cynical and tragic humor. Haushofer reinvents a bucolic bond without sentimentality; Orwell and Sterchi show the illusory resistance of cows; Boyer and Hadjadj conceive the being-cow as a need to escape deadly norms.La satire zoomorphique prend, au tournant des XXe-XXIe siècles, le contrepied de son registre habituel. La vaccamorphie, ou corporéité des vaches, ne se moque plus des femmes en leur attribuant des traits bovins, mais souligne la qualité des bovidés face à la folie des hommes. C’est une contre-satire dans le sens où les sujets comparés dérogent à leur ressemblance, et renversent l’ironie traditionnelle, en anoblissant la féminité. Nos cinq auteurs usent ainsi d’un humour discret, grinçant et tragique. First release of the European marine omics biodiversity observation network (EMO BON) shotgun metagenomics data from water and sediment samples
International audienceThe European Marine Omics Biodiversity Observation Network (EMO BON) is an initiative of the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC) to establish a persistent genomic observatory amongst designated European coastal marine sites, sharing the same protocols for sampling and data curation. Environmental samples are collected from the water column and, at some sites, soft sediments and hard substrates (Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures - ARMS), together with a set of mandatory and discretionary metadata (including Essential Ocean Variables - EOVs). Samples are collected following standardised protocols at regular and specified intervals and sequenced in large six-monthly batches at a centralised sequencing facility. The use of standard operating procedures (SOPs) during data collection, library preparation and sequencing aims to provide uniformity amongst the data collected from the sites. Coupled with strict adherence to open and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles, this ensures maximum comparability amongst samples and enhances reusability and interoperability of the data with other data sources. The observatory network was launched in June 2021, when the first sampling campaign took place
