Characterization of PM2.5 emissions from on-road vehicles in the tunnel of a major Middle Eastern city
International audienceTraffic emissions are an important source of air pollution worldwide, but in the Middle East, this problem is exacerbated by weak or no enforcement of emission regulations. Comprehensive measurements of fine PM emission factors (EFs) from road transport in the region have not yet been conducted, but such data are necessary for quantitative assessments of the health impact of transport emissions in the region. To address this need, PM 2.5 samples collected inside the Salim Slam tunnel in Beirut, Lebanon were analyzed for carbonaceous matter (organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC)), water-soluble ions, elements, and selected organic compounds. The OC/EC ratio was 1.8 for the total fleet and 2.6 for light-duty vehicles (LDV), in agreement with the dominant proportion of gasoline LDV in the Lebanese fleet. A Cu/Sb ratio of 4.2 ± 0.1 was observed, offering a valuable metric for detecting brake wear emissions in subsequent studies conducted in the region. The EFs of carbonaceous matter, elements and ions generally varied by a factor 0.1 and 10 in comparison to literature values, while those for alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were similar to the upper values previously reported. The average number size distribution was characterized by a single mode around 35 nm. The particles number EF (for diameters between 10 and 480 nm) was within the range of 10 14 -10 15 particles per kg of fuel. The chemical mass balance model showed an average contribution to EF of 62% from non-exhaust sources. This study highlights the need for more enforceable stringent vehicular regulations because of the local practices (i.e., removal of catalyst) and some EF values are very high compared to other studies/countries
Développement et validation du Test transdiagnostique de symptômes (2TS)
International audienceIntroduction: The categorical approach in psychiatry has received many criticisms. Modern research tends to develop a transdiagnostic approach. However, transdiagnostic works lack an overall understanding and focus mainly on anxiety and depression. The aim of the present study was to develop an easy to use tool to evaluate multiple dimensions opening the way for further research in the transdiagnostic approach. This will allow researchers to quickly assess the efficacy of psychotherapeutic interventions on multiple psychopathological dimensions.Method: First, we identified the main symptoms of psychopathology in a sample of mental healthcare workers. Second, we developed the Symptomatic Transdiagnostic Test (S2T) to assess the main symptoms of psychopathology. Third, we evaluated its psychometric properties (exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency) in three non-clinical samples and one clinical sample.Results: The 66-item S2T included eleven factors referring to: i) negative thoughts and mood; ii) psycho-traumatic and maladaptive symptoms; iii) addiction symptoms; iv) disturbed eating behavior; v) disturbed perception and behavior; vi) panic and agoraphobia; vii) emotional lability; viii) dejection; ix) neurodevelopmental manifestations; x) anxiety and xi) psychic hyperactivity. We found a high internal consistency for the general scale (α=0.96) and the subscales. We found a good concurrent validity. As expected, we found higher levels of symptoms within the clinical population as compared to the non-clinical samples, except for addiction symptoms and disrupted eating behavior. We found negative associations between the symptomatic dimensions and psychological skills.Conclusion: The S2T is a relevant tool for clinicians and researchers to assess the psychopathological profile. The main psychopathological symptoms are negatively related to the psychological skills
The IAHS Science for Solutions decade, with Hydrology Engaging Local People IN a Global world (HELPING)
(IF 2.8;Q2)International audienceThe new scientific decade (2023-2032) of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) aims at searching for sustainable solutions to undesired water conditions - may it be too little, too much or too polluted. Many of the current issues originate from global change, while solutions to problems must embrace local understanding and context. The decade will explore the current water crises by searching for actionable knowledge within three themes: global and local interactions, sustainable solutions and innovative cross-cutting methods. We capitalise on previous IAHS Scientific Decades shaping a trilogy; from Hydrological Predictions (PUB) to Change and Interdisciplinarity (Panta Rhei) to Solutions (HELPING). The vision is to solve fundamental water-related environmental and societal problems by engaging with other disciplines and local stakeholders. The decade endorses mutual learning and co-creation to progress towards UN sustainable development goals. Hence, HELPING is a vehicle for putting science in action, driven by scientists working on local hydrology in coordination with local, regional, and global processes
Working through multiple crises: the experience of psychotherapists and psychoanalysts in Lebanon
International audienceIntroduction This research explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on psychotherapists' practices and their ability to maintain a framework despite a shared reality with their patients. The specific focus in this article is on the Lebanese context, which is characterized by a series of crises including economic collapse, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Beirut blast. The objective of this study was to examine how the destabilization of the meta-frame due to crises necessitates adaptations in theoretical knowledge, practice, and setting. Methods We conducted a qualitative study among a population consisting of mental health professionals, which were recruited in Lebanon through associations and societies of psychologists, psychotherapists, and psychoanalysts. Data was collected using semi-structured individual interviews. The interviews were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), which allowed for a dynamic exploration of the participants' experiences. Results Our study revealed four superordinate themes: (1) The strained frontiers; (2) The cumulative traumatic reality and its impact; (3) A challenged professional identity; (4) The creativity stemming from collective trauma. Conclusions Our results highlight the insecurity caused by external reality infiltrating the therapeutic setting. Online therapy allowed for continued work, but uncertainty about the online environment's impact on therapeutic relationships was observed. The study underscores the importance of adaptability, containment, and support for therapists navigating crises, particularly in the online setting
Noninvasive evaluation of the skin barrier in reconstructed human epidermis using speckle analysis: Correlation with Raman microspectroscopy
International audienceAbstract Background Reconstructed epidermis models, obtained from 3D keratinocytes culture, have gained significant prominence as prototypes for safety and efficacy testing in skin research. To effectively evaluate these models, it is essential to perform molecular and functional characterization. The skin's barrier function is one of the essential aspects of the epidermis that needs to be assessed. A noninvasive method is thus required for the evaluation of the skin barrier in these models. With this perspective, the aim of this feasibility study is to apply the speckle technique for the assessment of the skin barrier in the Reconstructed Human Epidermis (RHE). Materials and methods Speckle analysis as well as Raman microspectroscopy were performed on RHE samples at two maturation days, D17 and D20. Results Between D17 and D20, our study showed an increase in various Raman parameters, including stratum corneum percentage, lateral lipid packing, lipid‐to‐protein ratio, and protein secondary structure. Furthermore, the degree of light polarization and the speckle grain size also increased over this period. Conclusion The speckle technique proved to be effective for evaluating the skin barrier in Reconstructed Human Epidermis (RHE) models. Comparison with Raman validates this approach and provides comprehensive molecular and functional characterization of reconstructive skin models

From Spent Black and Green Tea to Potential Health Boosters: Optimization of Polyphenol Extraction and Assessment of Their Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities
International audienceTea, one of the most popular beverages worldwide, generates a substantial amount of spent leaves, often directly discarded although they may still contain valuable compounds. This study aims to optimize the extraction of polyphenols from spent black tea (SBT) and spent green tea (SGT) leaves while also exploring their antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Response surface methodology was utilized to determine the optimal experimental conditions for extracting polyphenols from SBT and SGT. The total phenolic content (TPC) was quantified using the Folin–Ciocalteu method, while antioxidant activity was evaluated through the DPPH assay. Antibacterial activity was assessed using the disk diffusion method. Additionally, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed to analyze the phytochemical profiles of the SBT and SGT extracts. Optimal extraction for SBT achieved 404 mg GAE/g DM TPC and 51.5% DPPH inhibition at 93.64 °C, 79.9 min, and 59.4% ethanol–water. For SGT, conditions of 93.63 °C, 81.7 min, and 53.2% ethanol–water yielded 452 mg GAE/g DM TPC and 78.3% DPPH inhibition. Both tea extracts exhibited antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, with SGT showing greater efficacy against S. aureus and slightly better inhibition of B. subtilis compared to SBT. No activity was observed against the Gram-negative bacteria E. coli and S. typhimurium. HPLC analysis revealed hydroxybenzoic acid as the main phenolic compound in SBT (360.7 mg/L), while rutin was predominant in SGT (42.73 mg/L). The optimized phenolic-rich extracts of SBT and SGT demonstrated promising antioxidant and antibacterial potential, making them strong candidates for use as natural health boosters in food products
The Implications of Sacralized Transitional Vertebra on Spinal Alignment
International audienceStudy design: Retrospective study of a multicentric prospective database. Objective: This study aimed to determine, in a cohort of healthy volunteers, the impact of sacralized lumbo-sacral transitional vertebra (LSTV) on spinal alignment according to its grade, particularly regarding lumbar lordosis magnitude and distribution, and the implications for spinopelvic parameters measurement. Summary of Background Data: There is little data regarding spinopelvic alignment assessment in LSTV patients. Methods: This study included healthy volunteers with full-body stereoradiographs in free-standing position aged over 18. Castellvi grade, pelvic parameters (measured on S1 and L5), L1-S1 lumbar lordosis (LL) and segmental lordosis for each disc and vertebral body, thoracic kyphosis, cervical lordosis, lower limb, and global alignment parameters were assessed. Castellvi I and II were considered as Low-grade and Castellvi III and IV as High-grade LSTV. Alignment parameters between No-LSTV, Low- and High-grade LSTV were compared. Propensity score matching was used to match PI in No-LSTV and Low-grades. Spinopelvic parameters measured on S1 in No-LSTV group and on L5 in High-grade were compared. Results: 713 subjects were included, of whom 23 Low-grades and 27 High-grades. Mean pelvic incidence was 51.0±11.0° and mean age was 37.5±16.2 years. LL distribution was different between groups, with an apex and inflexion point significantly higher in High-grade (P<0.001). Kyphosis in the LSTV segment was compensated for by a steeper increase of LL above L5 in the High-grades. Low-grades and PI-matched No-LSTV presented similar alignment parameters. There were minor differences in parameters measured on S1 in No-LSTV and no L5 in High-grades. Conclusion: Subjects with low-grade LSTV present similar alignment as PI-matched No-LSTV subjects, and S1 should be taken as reference to measure spinopelvic parameters. High-grade LSTV subjects have kyphotic L5-S1 segment with more cranial lumbar apex and thoracolumbar inflexion point. In these subjects, spinopelvic parameters should be measured on L5
Banking dynamics in MENA: a study on profit catalysts
International audienceThis study aims to investigate the managerial determinants of publicly listed banks' performance in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, specifically focusing on the distinction between oil-exporting and oil-importing countries. The research covers the period from 2011 to 2021 and includes selected countries such as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (oil-exporting), Egypt, Lebanon, and Morocco (oil-importing). By utilising dynamic panel data estimation techniques, two models are developed with return on assets (ROA) and net interest margin (NIM) as dependent variables. Bank-specific independent variables, including size, liquidity, credit risk, and capital adequacy, are analysed along with macroeconomic variables such as GDP and inflation. Data from Thomson Reuters Data Stream for 97 publicly listed banks in the MENA region are employed, and the pooled least squares (OLS), fixed effects (FEM), and random effects (REM) methods are used for data analysis. The empirical findings reveal significant variations in the relationship between selected variables and banks' profitability, indicating the importance of understanding the determinants of banks' performance for stakeholders and bank executives to make informed decisions
