    International audienceDans un contexte contemporain marqué par une tendance croissante à s'enfermer dans des logiques d’opposition, la réflexion sur l'altérité en islam ouvre une perspective indispensable à la compréhension de la manière dont l’autre est perçu. L'examen de ce rapport met en lumière des normes qui régissent les interactions et les cadres normatifs, souvent opérant en profondeur, qui gouvernent les relations à l’autre qui en découlent. C’est dans le contexte de ce débat que le 3e Congrès international de PLURIEL a été organisé à l'Université St Joseph, à Beyrouth, du 23 au 25 mai 2022, réunissant des chercheurs de différentes universités du monde. Les présents actes mettent en lumière ces dynamiques à travers des analyses approfondies, explorant les enjeux contemporains et historiques liés à cette articulation. Ils contribuent, ainsi, à une compréhension élargie, dans un contexte mondial complexe, des diverses manières d'envisager et de définir l'autre en islam

    Optimized Extraction of Polyphenols from Kiwifruit Peels and Their Biological Activities

    International audience(1) Background: Kiwifruit is a globally valued fruit. Its industrial processing produces a substantial amount of waste, particularly peels, which present an appealing potential source of bioactive compounds. This study focuses on optimizing the extraction of phenolics from kiwi peels using a water bath (WB) and infrared irradiation (IR) and assessing their biological activities. (2) Methods: Optimal conditions for polyphenol extraction from kiwifruit peels, in terms of temperature and time, were determined using Response Surface Methodology. Total phenolic content (TPC) was measured by the Folin–Ciocalteu method, and antioxidant activity was assessed utilizing the DPPH method. Antibacterial activities against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella Typhimurium were determined using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The lyophilized extract was tested for its anticancer effect on A549 lung cancer cell lines. The phytochemical profiles of the WB and IR extracts were analyzed through High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). (3) Results: The optimal extraction conditions for the WB method were found to be 75 °C for 35 min, and 90 °C for 5 min for IR. The corresponding TPC obtained by IR was 21 mg GAE/g DM, which was 4.4 times higher than that obtained by WB (4.8 mg GAE/g DM). This indicates that IR was more efficient in extracting phenolics from kiwi peels. The antioxidant activity under the optimum conditions of WB and IR was 14 mg TE/g DM and 16 mg TE/g DM, respectively. Both the WB and IR extracts demonstrated antibacterial activity against B. cereus with an MIC value of 25 mg/mL. Additionally, the IR extract displayed an antibacterial effect against S. aureus, with an MIC value of 50 mg/mL. The WB and IR kiwi peel extracts were effective in significantly reducing A549 cell viability at 50 µg/mL and 100 µg/mL, respectively. Caffeic acid (0.54 ppm) and catechin (5.44 ppm) were the major polyphenols identified in WB and IR extracts, as determined by HPLC. (4) Conclusions: IR was more efficient in extracting phenolics from kiwi peels than WB. The findings also suggest that kiwi peel can be effectively utilized as an antioxidant, antibacterial, and anticancer agent

    European genetic resources conservation in a rapidly changing world: three existential challenges for the crop, forest and animal domains in the 21st century

    International audienceEven though genetic resources represent a fundamental reservoir of options to achieve sustainable development goals in a changing world, they are overlooked in the policy agenda and severely threatened. The conservation of genetic resources relies on complementary in situ and ex situ approaches appropriately designed for each type of organism. Environmental and socioeconomic changes raise new challenges and opportunities for sustainable use and conservation of genetic resources. Aiming at a more integrated and adaptive approach, European scientists and genetic resources managers with long experience in the agricultural crop, animal and forestry domains joined their expertise to address three critical challenges: (1) how to adapt genetic resources conservation strategies to climate change, (2) how to promote in situ conservation strategies and (3) how can genetic resources conservation contribute to and benefit from agroecological systems. We present here 31 evidence-based statements and 88 key recommendations elaborated around these questions for policymakers, conservation actors and the scientific community. We anticipate that stakeholders in other genetic resources domains and biodiversity conservation actors across the globe will have interest in these crosscutting and multi-actor recommendations, which support several biodiversity conservation policies and practices

    Disc Versus Vertebral Body Contribution to Lumbar Lordosis in Asymptomatic Subjects

    International audienceStudy Design: Retrospective study of a multicentric prospective database.Objective: This study aimed at describing the relative contribution of vertebral bodies versus discs to lumbar lordosis, and its variation with age and pelvic incidence.Summary of Background Data: While studies sought to determine the physiological magnitude and distribution of lumbar lordosis, data regarding its anatomical composition is lacking.Methods: This study included healthy volunteers with full-body stereoradiographs in free-standing position, without lumbosacral transitional vertebra or age under 18. The following parameters were analyzed: age, sex, pelvic incidence (PI), lumbar lordosis (LL). Posterior heights and sagittal Cobb angles between upper and lower endplate for each lumbar disc and each vertebral body were measured from L1 to S1. Ratios of contribution to LL were calculated for each disc and vertebral body. The cohort was divided into four age groups and four PI groups.Results: 645 subjects were included, mean age was 37.6±16.3, 51% of females. There was a significant decrease in total lumbar disc lordosis with age (−48.9±9.7° to −42.9±10.2°), occurring in lower LL. Vertebral bodies were significantly more kyphotic in Seniors than Youngs (−8.9±8.4° vs. −5.0±9.4°, P=0.03), driven by a significant increase in kyphosis of L1 and L2 bodies. Vertebral body contribution to LL significantly increased between groups as PI increased, from a median of 8.0% to 20.5% (P<0.001). This decrease in disc contribution in favor of vertebral bodies mainly took place in lower LL.Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of vertebral contribution to lumbar lordosis, ranging from 8 to 21% among PI groups. Lumbar lordosis decreased with aging through decreased disc lordosis in the lower lumbar spine and increased body kyphosis in the upper lumbar spine. These results may help surgeons in the assessment of sagittal alignment and the selection of operative technique to achieve surgical correction

    Weight suppression at lowest weight as an indicator of eating disorder clinical severity: A retrospective cohort study

    International audienceObjectives: Weight suppression (WS) defines the difference between the highest weight in adulthood and the current weight. WS at lowest weight is the difference between the highest and the lowest ever weight. Weight rebound is the difference between the past lowest weight and current weight. The distinction in the capacities of WS, weight rebound, and WS at the lowest weight remains unclear regarding their efficacy in forecasting clinical endpoints. This study assessed the relationship between WS, WS at lowest weight and/or weight rebound and eating disorder (ED) clinical severity.Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, adult participants were selected at the Outpatient Unit for multidisciplinary assessment of ED, Montpellier, France, between February 2012 and October 2014 and May 2017 and January 2020. ED clinical severity was evaluated using the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q).Results: The sample included 303 patients: 204 with anorexia nervosa (AN) and 99 with bulimia nervosa (BN). The EDE-Q total score was positively correlated with WS at lowest weight in patients with AN (Spearman's rho = 0.181, p = 0.015) and with BN (Spearman's rho = 0.377; p < 0.001). It was also positively correlated with weight rebound (Spearman's rho = 0.319; p = 0.003) in patients with BN. In the multivariate analysis, EDE-Q total score was associated with WS at lowest weight only in patients with BN (β = 0.265; p = 0.03).Conclusion: WS at lowest weight seems to be a good measure of ED clinical severity. More research is needed for better understanding WS at lowest weight in assessment and treatment of patients with ED

    CFAR Compressed Detection in Heavy-Cluttered Indoor Environments Using IR-UWB Radar: New Experimentally Supported Results

    International audienceThis paper presents a novel CFAR compressed detection approach for human detection using IR-UWB radar. The associated Xampling scheme operates way below the Nyquist limit and is designed to minimize the sensing matrix coherence, without increasing the implementation complexity. The proposed signal processing architecture aims to detect both moving and stationary people in the framework of heavy-cluttered use cases, such as smart factory indoor environments. In order to address this challenge, we rely on standard radar signal processing, including MTI filtering, noise whitening, and Doppler focusing, but also introduce two new algorithms for joint sparse reconstruction and CFAR detection, in fast-time and range-Doppler domains, respectively. We propose a specific detection statistic, which is proven to be appropriate for both algorithms, its distribution being identified and then validated by standard goodness-of-fit tests. Moreover, it enables reducing the CFAR scheme complexity, since the associated detection threshold is invariant to the noise power, thus making unnecessary its estimation. The proposed approach is finally validated using both simulated and experimentally measured data in an Industry 4.0 indoor environment, for several canonical scenarios. The effectiveness of our CFAR compressed detection algorithms for human detection is thus fully demonstrated, and their performance is assessed and compared to that obtained by signal processing at the Nyquist sampling rate.</div

    Full-body Postural Alignment Analysis Through Barycentremetry

    International audienceStudy design: Multicentric retrospective. Objective: The study of center of mass (COM) locations (i.e. barycentremetry) can help us understand postural alignment. This study goal was to determine relationships between COM locations and global postural alignment X-ray parameters in healthy subjects. The second objective was to determine the impact on spinopelvic alignment of increased distance between anterior body envelope and spine at lumbar apex level. Summary of background data: Unexplored relationship between COM location and spinopelvic parameters. Methods: This study included healthy volunteers with full-body biplanar radiograph including body envelope reconstruction, allowing the estimation of COM location. The following parameters were analyzed: lumbar lordosis (LL), thoracic kyphosis (TK), cervical lordosis (CL), pelvic tilt (PT), Sacro-femoral angle (SFA), Knee flexion angle (KFA), sagittal odontoid-hip axis angle (ODHA). The following COM in the sagittal plane were located: whole body, at thoracolumbar inflexion point, and body segment above TK apex. The body envelope reconstruction also provided the distance between anterior skin and the LL apex vertebral body center (“SV-L distance”). Results: This study included 124 volunteers, with a mean age of 44±19.3. Multivariate analysis confirmed posterior translation of COM above TK apex with increasing LL (P=0.002) through its proximal component, and posterior shift of COM at inflexion point with increasing TK (P=0.008). Increased SV-L distance was associated with greater ODHA (r=0.4) and more anterior body COM (r=0.8), caused by increased TK (r=0.2) and decreased proximal and distal LL (both r=0.3), resulting in an augmentation in SFA (r=0.3) (all P&lt;0.01). Conclusions: Barycentremetry showed that greater LL was associated with posterior shift of COM above thoracic apex while greater TK was correlated with more posterior COM at inflexion point. Whole-body COM was strongly correlated with ODHA. This study also exhibited significant alignment disruption associated with increased abdominal volume, with compensatory hip extension.     Source apportionment of PM2.5 using organic/inorganic markers and emission inventory evaluation in the East Mediterranean-Middle East city of Beirut

    International audienceSource contributions to PM2.5 concentrations were evaluated in Greater Beirut (Lebanon), a typical East Mediterranean-Middle East (EMME) city, using Positive Matrix Factorization with two approaches. The first approach included only inorganic species (PMF-trad) and the other approach added organic markers (PMF-org). PMF-org identified 4 additional sources, and large discrepancies in contributions were observed for some major sources found in both approaches, highlighting the importance of including organic markers. The traffic factor was underestimated in PMF-trad by 2 to 7 folds. Moreover, results showed that this city is prone to high desert dust concentrations originating from uncontrollable dust storm events, like all cities in the Middle East. A PM2.5 mitigation plan taking into account the potency of the identified sources was developed. Sources like diesel generators or traffic presented smaller contributions in term of mass compared to desert dust, however the health impact of the latter is relatively small and actions should target sources with the highest potency. Local emission inventories in the EMME region are scarce and studies typically rely on global emission inventories for local air quality management plans, but these inventories significantly underestimate Beirut's road transport emissions by more than an order of magnitude

    Three reasons why parental burnout is more prevalent in individualistic countries: a mediation study in 36 countries

    International audiencePurpose The prevalence of parental burnout, a condition that has severe consequences for both parents and children, varies dramatically across countries and is highest in Western countries characterized by high individualism.Method In this study, we examined the mediators of the relationship between individualism measured at the country level and parental burnout measured at the individual level in 36 countries (16,059 parents). Results The results revealed three mediating mechanisms, that is, self-discrepancies between socially prescribed and actual parental selves, high agency and self-directed socialization goals, and low parental task sharing, by which individualism leads to an increased risk of burnout among parents.Conclusion The results confirm that the three mediators under consideration are all involved, and that mediation was higher for self-discrepancies between socially prescribed and actual parental selves, then parental task sharing, and lastly selfdirected socialization goals. The results provide some important indications of how to prevent parental burnout at the societal level in Western countries

    Peptides in Dentistry: A Scoping Review

    Currently, it remains unclear which specific peptides could be appropriate for applications in different fields of dentistry. The aim of this scoping review was to scan the contemporary scientific papers related to the types, uses and applications of peptides in dentistry at the moment. Literature database searches were performed in the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Scielo. A total of 133 articles involving the use of peptides in dentistry-related applications were included. The studies involved experimental designs in animals, microorganisms, or cells; clinical trials were also identified within this review. Most of the applications of peptides included caries management, implant osseointegration, guided tissue regeneration, vital pulp therapy, antimicrobial activity, enamel remineralization, periodontal therapy, the surface modification of tooth implants, and the modification of other restorative materials such as dental adhesives and denture base resins. The in vitro and in vivo studies included in this review suggested that peptides may have beneficial effects for treating early carious lesions, promoting cell adhesion, enhancing the adhesion strength of dental implants, and in tissue engineering as healthy promotors of the periodontium and antimicrobial agents. The lack of clinical trials should be highlighted, leaving a wide space available for the investigation of peptides in dentistry.
