No full textThis book [Mediatized power and the return of the political] describes Finnish decision-makers’ relationship with the media. It is based on surveys in 2009 and 2019. In 2009 there were 419 and in 2019 484 respondents, all of them having an influential position in some of the eight societal sectors covered in the study. The results show a moderate change from a consensus-oriented and networking decision-making culture towards a more ideologic and power-based way of negotiating.
However, it seems that this has not affected how open or transparent the negotiation-processes are or how prone the decision-makers are to leak confidential information. The decision-makers’ relationship with media publicity has become more professional and strategic.
The results point to an increased role of social media in communications management while the role of the news media seems to be diminishing. Even though the decision-makers view publicity as an even more risky and strategic arena of political struggle than they did before, they also seem now acknowledge more clearly the rational aspects of journalism. The self-reported role of media publicity as a source of personal authority has somewhat diminished while there seems to be no change in how prone the decision-makers think they are for the impacts of media publicity.

Kyselyihin vastasi vaikuttaja-asemassa olevia henkilöitä kahdeksalta eri yhteiskuntasektorilta. Vuonna 2009 vastaajia oli 419 ja vuonna 2019 heitä oli 484. Tulokset kuvaavat pientä mutta selvää muutosta konsensushakuisesta ja verkostomaisesta päätöksentekotavasta kohti ideologisempaa ja enemmän valtakamppailuihin nojaavaa päätöksentekotapaa. Tämä ei kuitenkaan näytä juuri vaikuttaneen neuvotteluprosessien avoimuuteen tai haluun rikkoa niiden luottamuksellisuutta. Päättäjien suhde julkisuuteen on kuitenkin muuttunut aiempaa ammattimaisemmaksi ja harkitummaksi. Myös sosiaalisen median merkityksen kasvu julkisuudenhallinnassa näkyy tuloksissa selvästi samoin kuin journalistisen uutismedian painoarvon lasku. Julkisuus mielletään aiempaakin riskialttiimmaksi ja tarkoitushakuisemmaksi poliittisen kamppailun areenaksi, mutta arviot journalismin rationaalisuudesta ovat muuttuneet myönteisemmiksi. Mediajulkisuuden koettu merkitys henkilökohtaisen vaikutusvallan lähteenä on heikentynyt hieman, mutta päättäjien käsitykset heidän alttiudestaan mediavaikutuksille eivät juuri ole muuttuneet.

practical overview of the Finnish health and social care sector trends
in the 2020s. The health and social care reform is again current as new
ways of organising the sector are being developed on the foundation of
the reform that fell through in spring 2019.
The book introduces the Finnish health and social care services
reform from three perspectives. The first part of the book looks at the
sector from a macro perspective, that is, from the perspective of the
service system reform. The articles deal with a historical overview of
previous reforms, integration, and research on effectiveness and
cost-effectiveness. The second part focuses on the organisational level
issues such as reform of management and know-how and the challenges
digitalisation poses for the health and social services. The third part
of the book centres on the perspective of the people who implement the
changes. The themes of the articles include care workers’ multi-actor
collaboration, person-centred case management and client
involvement.
The book is based on research done at the University of Eastern
Finland as well as Finnish and international research literature. The
authors represent various disciplines: health and social management,
social work, social psychology and other social sciences and law. The
book is aimed at managers and professionals, experts, decision makers,
researchers and teachers in the field of health and social care. It is
also suitable as a textbook for management studies at the university

No full textAccording to this study, the relation between media and politics in the field of environmental politics is defined by the increasing cultural significance of environmental protection from the 1970s to the present. In the newspaper coverage of the three environmental conflicts studied, changes on the frames, narration and opinion-giving of journalism resonated with this cultural change. However, the significance of environmental protection in the framing, narration and opinion-giving of journalism was greater in the national newspaper studied compared to the local newspapers selected based on their proximity to the conflict sites. Styles of argumentation appeared to be more case dependent. The increasing cultural significance of environmental protection did not have a clear effect on how arguments were legitimated.Tutkimuksen perusteella median ja politiikan välisen suhteen rakentumista ympäristöpolitiikan toimintakentällä määrittelee ympäristönsuojelun kulttuurisen painoarvon merkittävä vahvistuminen 1970-luvulta nykypäivään. Tutkituissa tapauksissa journalismin kehykset, kerronta ja mielipiteenilmaisu virittyivät pitkälti tämän kulttuurisen muutoksen mukaisesti. Ympäristökiistojen tapahtumapaikkoihin kiinnittyvän paikallisjulkisuuden ja valtakunnallisen julkisuuden välillä vaikuttaisi tässä suhteessa olevan kuitenkin myös selkeitä eroja. Toimijoiden näkökulmasta ympäristön pilaamisen oikeuttamisesta journalistisessa julkisuudessa on tullut hankalampaa ja ympäristönsuojelun merkityksen suorasta kiistämisestä riskialtista. Järkeilyn tyylissä ei tutkituissa tapauksissa havaittu vastaavanlaisia eroja. Julkisuus ei muuttunut konfliktihakuisemmaksi. Ympäristöön liittyvän tiedon, ympäristönsuojelun arvon tai vilpillisyyteen liittyvien epäilysten merkitys kiistoperusteena vaihteli tapauksittain.

Shaping and Re-shaping the Boundaries of Working Life
No full textThis edited book offers a series of short essay-type chapters covering a broad variety of topics related to how labour markets, work and working life are continuously changing. The book has a strong cross-national approach and stresses the importance of studying both microlevel changes within macrolevel contexts as well as the microlevel mechanisms of changes at the macrolevel.
The chapters are grouped in four parts. Part I deals with how life courses have changed, with special focus on the entry of women to the labour market and the determinants of their economic contribution. Part II discusses two circuits of labour migration: that of mostly high-skilled and regulated work and that of mostly low-skilled and unregulated work. However, it also shows that the boundaries between those two are not always clear. Part III focuses on how work itself is changing, using the examples of women attorneys’ pro-bono work in Finland and Poland and the use of lean management in the Nordic public sector. Finally, in Part IV the authors explore the power of institutions and ideas in reshaping the way we work while labour markets are under pressure.

Ludwig Mühlhausen, Séamus Ó Caiside and Scéal Rí na Gréige: The Tale of ‘Three Golden Children’ (ATU 707) in 1937 Donegal
No full textOn 25 August 1937, a strange-looking man appeared in the fishing hamlet of Teelin in Donegal, Ireland, wearing a gentleman’s suit and a pair of round glasses. He spoke Irish, albeit with a foreign, Kerry accent. After a month there, he asked a local storyteller, Séamus Ó Caiside, if he could relate a few stories for him. Between 24 September and 13 October 1937, the two men recorded 12 tales and two songs across 24 storytelling sessions.
The visitor’s name was Ludwig Mühlhausen, Professor of Celtic Studies at the University of Berlin. On his return to Germany, ten tales collected from Ó Caiside were published as Zehn irische Volkserzählungen aus Süd-Donegal. Of the tales the scholar chose not to publish, one called ‘Scéal Rí na Gréige’ (‘The Tale of the King of Greece’) falls within the focus of this study.
‘Scéal Rí na Gréige’ presents a version of the well-known international folktale type ATU 707: ‘Three Golden Children’. The author examines the type’s dissemination in Ireland, and provides its classification into four ecotypes. Despite its wide distribution in the Irish oral tradition, the author suggests that the story known to Ó Caiside came from the printed medium – from a popular version of The Arabian Nights Entertainments.
To be understood by the Irish-speaking audience, the story was rendered in the vernacular; yet, its key elements were articulated in English, embellishing the plot with a flavour of exoticism and of the faraway lands. ‘Scéal Rí na Gréige’, a unique folklore product, marries the Irish vernacular to the European print culture. It represents a true testimony to Séamus Ó Caiside’s inquisitive mind and creative genius, and signifies an innovative step in the development of the Irish oral tradition.

And there is much folklore data buried in dictionaries, whether compiled by those who were folklorists or by those who were not. Thus dictionaries represent a notable source of folklore data supplementary to the already familiar field, archival and monographic sources. This book attempts to take the measure of such data with a set of studies ranging from Greece to England, and from Newfoundland to Trinidad and Tobago.
An introductory essay discusses the location of folklore within dictionaries. Then the first of the three main sections of the book deals with the role folklore has played in the formation of certain remarkable dictionaries. This is followed by a series of case studies of the folklore content of particular dictionaries. And the book closes with a set of studies that address the methodological issues that using dictionaries as folklore sources raises

No full textVoting advice applications (VAA) have supported Finnish voters for over 20 years in their voting decisions in general elections. Most Finnish VAAs are planned and provided by the media, and they are based on matching opinions of individual candidates with an individual VAA users before elections. Nowadays, in Finland, VAAs are important for almost all age groups. Among the youngest voters VAAs are viewed as the most important source of information to support voting decisions.Vaalikoneilla on Suomessa yli 20 vuoden historia. Suurin osa suomalaisista vaalikoneista on median toteuttamia ehdokasvaalikoneita. Niiden merkitys vaalitiedon lähteenä on kohonnut maassamme merkittäväksi lähes kaikissa äänioikeutettujen ikäryhmissä. Nuorimmille äänestäjille vaalikoneet ovat jo merkittävin äänestyspäätösten tietolähde.
Teos tarjoaa ajantasaisen ja kattavan kuvan vaalikoneiden nykyisestä asemasta suomalaisessa poliittisessa järjestelmässä ja viestintäkentässä. Uusia tutkimuksellisia näkökulmia ovat vaalikonejournalismi sekä ehdokkaiden näkemykset vaalikoneista. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu valitsijakyselyistä, vaalikoneiden analyysista, vaalikoneita koskevista uutisista sekä ehdokkaiden, kampanjavastaavien ja vaalikoneiden tekijöiden haastatteluista. The articles also show how important it is to study these themes in order to understand challenges in times of global threats, such as the climate crisis.
The main themes of the book are approached from various theoretical perspectives as related to their literary and cultural representations. Recent trends in research, such as affect and risk theory, serve as the basis for the discussion. Many of the articles in the volume discuss apocalyptic and dystopian narratives that currently permeate the entire cultural landscape. Dystopian narratives do not only deal with future threats, such as totalitarianism, technocracy, or environmental disasters, but also suggest alternative ways of being and new hopes in the form of political resistance.
The articles in the volume also draw from disciplines such as gender studies and trauma studies to examine the threats posed by collective fears and aggression on individuals’ lives and propose ways of coping with fear. These themes are addressed also in articles analysing new adaptations of old myths that retell stories of the past.
