Comparing the vibration of effects due to model, data pre-processing and sampling uncertainty on a large data set in personality psychology
No full textResearchers have great flexibility in the analysis of observational data. If combined with selective reporting and pressure to publish, this flexibility can have devastating consequences on the validity of research findings. We extend the recently proposed vibration of effects approach to provide a framework comparing three main sources of uncertainty which lead to instability in empirical findings, namely data pre-processing, model, and sampling uncertainty. We analyze the behavior of these sources for varying sample sizes for two associations in personality psychology. Through the joint investigation of model and data pre-processing vibration, we can compare the relative impact of these two types of uncertainty and identify the most influential analytical choices. While all types of vibration show a decrease for increasing sample sizes, data pre-processing and model vibration remain non-negligible, even for a sample of over 80000 participants. The increasing availability of large data sets that are not initially recorded for research purposes can make data pre-processing and model choices very influential. We therefore recommend the framework as a tool for transparent reporting of the stability of research findings

No full textResearchers have pointed out the need for longitudinal studies of development efforts, but a problem that occurs when you only have the opportunity to participate in the change for a short time is that projects and initiatives that are canceled shortly after the start mean that we lack sufficient information about the reasons for this and what happens / does not happen after the investment in skills development has ended. A follow-up of various initiatives and projects after they have been completed could provide interesting knowledge as a complement to previous studies, "what happens next?". Can the municipalities direct their interest towards this and perhaps use those among the school's staff who have different forms of scientific training (lecturers, first teachers, etc.) given the interest that exists in practice-based research (preferably in collaboration with partners within the universities). And such work could also provide thoughts on how we develop the work with teachers' competence development and learning.Forskare har påtalat behovet av longitudinella studier av utvecklingsinsatser men ett problem som inträffar när man enbart har möjlighet att delta i förändringen under kort tid är att projekt och satsningar som avbryts kort tid efter start innebär att vi saknar tillräcklig information om orsakerna till detta och vad som händer/inte händer efter ”projektslutet”.
En uppföljning av olika satsningar och projekt efter att de avslutats skulle kunna ge intressant kunskap som komplettering till tidigare studier, ”vad händer sedan?”. Kan kommunerna rikta sitt intresse mot detta och kanske utnyttja de bland skolans personal som har olika former av vetenskaplig skolning (lektorer, förstelärare m fl) med tanke på det intresse som finns kring praktiknära forskning (gärna i samarbete med parter inom universiteten). Och ett sådant arbete skulle också kunna ge tankar kring hur vi utvecklar arbetet med lärares kompetensutveckling och lärande
