Anderberg, Forkby & Thelin 2020).
An exploration of multimodal method for digital game analysis
Ever since Mitchell put into words the famous idea that “All media are, from the standpoint of sensory modality, 'mixed media'” (2005), and allegedly long before that, studies of media products have dealt with mediation as a multimodal phenomenon or function in the process of meaning-making. In today’s digitalized world, the modes of communication have shifted somewhat even though the smallest constituent parts of communication stay the same. Digital games, as they have evolved exponentially in the past half-century make use of new affordances of the digital mode to convey stories that are in dialogue with the person interacting with them. This presentation will focus on how an experimental multimodal toolbox building on and expanding the framework presented by Hawreliak (2018) can be used to analyze digital games, taking the 2022 game Stray as an example. Through the motif of decentralizing the human, it is explored how the focalizer’s perspective, a stray cat, is enhanced in the game design through the different modes of the game by looking at the visual aspects, as well as the sounds, the narrative, the haptic feedback and the gameplay mechanics and design. The field of multimodality historically focused on communication and linguistics but does today incorporate studies of a broad range of communication forms. Social semiotics and discourse analysis have shifted the focus from the media product as a separate entity and highlighted the importance of the socio-cultural context and power hierarchies in communication. Games are naturally not excepted from this, and the role of the player as interpreter in meaning-making is crucial
Text Messaging in Narrative Film: Intermedial Intertemporalities
For over a century narrative film has always adopted new technologies, while also fluidly establishing visual conventions for representing new technology’s interfaces with embodied experience. Text messaging on mobile devices is a remarkable exception in this history. 31 years after Nokia introduced phone SMS, texting has become a ubiquitous mediation in every aspect of embodied and mediated experience, but narrative film has yet to learn how to represent this activity with the fluidity in which film represents every other human activity. This text/film dissonance stands out starkly in our age in which intermediality has been normalized and we so fluidly move between, and through, multimedialities – which are now seamlessly integrated with embodied life. Film’s inadequacy in this matter represents a visual challenge, but arises from a temporal challenge. Both film and texting are media temporalities operating profoundly differently from embodied temporalities. More significantly, film and texting temporalities differ radically from each other. Hence, in addition to proposing a study in intermediality I am offering a study in intertemporality. With this I hope to develop dimensions of intermedial studies as intertemporal studies. Texts are generally expected to be read and replied to ASAP, introducing a mediated temporal anxiousness here-to-for nonexistent. Of course, face-to-face encounters also demand temporal immediacy, but this challenge is supported by bodily presence congruous with millions of years of evolution. In the blink of an eye, historically speaking, social media has compelled instantaneity in contexts of non-physical presence. Texts – so simple to compose, send, receive, and resend – are the most temporally anxious aspect of social media. In this paper I briefly contextualize texts as media relative to somatic life, and then examen how this temporally-most-anxious media is represented in the first temporal media form, film. Examining how texting is, and is not, represented in film we find increasingly complicated layers of intertextualities, multimodalities, and inevitably contradictory reader/reception dynamics and interfaces. Now that digital intermediality has been completely integrated into somatic life, what can the misfit of text messaging within narrative film’s representations of embodied life tell us about the limits of our supposedly normalized experience within intermediality
Film music and media literacy: case Captain America
Hollywood, with its global influence, has a long history of wielding of soft power (see e.g. Laderman 2018), with digitalisation facilitating the reaching of ever-wider audiences and forming of complex media ecosystems. Several mechanisms through which music might participate in the communication of ideas and ideology have been found, for example “narrative cueing” (Gorbman 1987; Herget 2021) and influencing identification to film characters (Hoeckner et al. 2011), identification being a mechanism for narrative persuasion (Graaf et al. 2012). In the digital age, understanding these mechanisms of influence, in which film music and the auditory mode in general play a part, is a part of our critical media literacy.
The Marvel superhero character Captain America has been seen as the embodiment of the idea of U.S. exceptionalism, legitimizing the use of U.S. military force (Gruenewald 2018) and depicting it as a global force for good (Griffin 2018). In the aforementioned ways, the music of the 21st century Captain America films factors into these portrayals.
Aims
A part of an ongoing PhD work, this presentation zooms in on the influence of music in film in forming and contextualizing the depictions of ideas, values and ideology. It explores the conceptualisations and theoretical viewpoints from which these topics as well as ideology in specifically U.S. mainstream film and have previously been approached. The case of the aforementioned themes in the 21st century Captain America films is examined to demonstrate these relations.
Main Contribution and implications
This work relates of the role of music as a basic media type with semiotic capabilities in film, an audiovisual narrative, and musicological research within the wider topic of the impact of entertainment on beliefs and attitudes. As the topics of effects of music in film, narrative persuasion, identification, and the political-cultural functions of mainstream fiction film (and entertainment more broadly) are spread across many different fields and non-related studies, their systematic evaluation becomes necessary to understand the power that music in film has in shaping the beliefs and attitudes of the audience. Producing knowledge on the mechanisms of influence in mainstream film is critical to our cultural media literacy
More than play: Videogames as platforms of agency
The role of online gaming and videogames with features enabling online interactivity have been increasing in popularity when their presence on the internet is observed. Videogame titles such as Helldivers 2, Baldur’s gate 3, Elden Ring, and Lethal Company which have sparked and initiated trends and online sensations on social media by means of the forums and communities established around them, have induced an impact on how the gaming market is handled digitally and from the developers’ perspective. The approach of the studios behind these titles in terms of fan engagement and the way the gaming industry and companies handle backlash, criticism and demand from the playerbase highlight the players’ reception of monetisation and marketing in the gaming industry. The memes that are created by the players and fans of these games and how they act both as promotional or subversive standing points online show that the gaming industry substantially influences and is influenced by social media representation and reception. This, in a way, could both make or break the game’s success. It is crucial to examine how the player communities also dictate and influence the way popular media operates, such as advertisements and how the companies that makes these games utilise online media to garner more incentive toward their products. Furthermore, the way the game design and features change based on the target audience and the concerns voiced by the gaming community also are suggestive of the concept that videogames are becoming much more of online platforms that bring communities together and maybe even endorse particular moral, ethical or environmental agendas. On the other hand, the fact that there are modding communities that directly interact with how a game operates or gets added features entirely made by players shows that videogames are progressive forms of media that directly enable audience participation, not solely through gameplay, but also through game creation/game design. Specifically on the marketing aspect and payment features in a videogame, another commonly voiced yet widely dismissed issue with contemporary gaming is also monetisation and how a lot of gaming companies exploit and abuse the player engagement via microtransactions or paid features that can completely alter one’s gaming experience, which can be observed in the reception of the title Dragon’s Dogma 2. It is also important to address these “features” in terms of their psychological aspects for the experientiality of a videogame. Ultimately, videogames present a field of research that offers more than ludic and narrative foci, and pose an intermedial surge due to the medium’s virtual presence on other forms of media. Thus, the aim of this study is to examine and deliberate on the conveyance and experientiality of agency in the stated videogames within the scope of their virtual presence through memes, online communities, the gaming industry’s approach and their intermedial significance through other forms of media

“Oi! Dét skal jeg gjøre”: Choosing Sámi as second language in upper secondary school
Through official language policy, schools in Norway have been given an important role in the process of language revitalization of Sami, and students have the option of having Sámi as first language or as second language. The aim of this presentation is to discuss which role the school subject Sámi as second language plays in this process. This school subject was first introduced in 1987, so it is a recent option for students in primary and secondary school. Politically it is framed as part of language revitalization aiming for increasing the numbers of Sámi language users, and there is a special attention on transitions from Sami as second language to Sámi as first language in primary or lower secondary school. However, we know little about the students’ perspectives, and we know especially little about students beginning with Sámi as second language in upper secondary school. In this presentation I zoom in on this latter category of Sámi language students and ask which social and historical discourses circulate in students’ choices to start studying Sami as second language at this stage of their educational trajectory. The data is from an ongoing discourse ethnographic project within the framework of nexus analysis (Scollon & Scollon, 2004), and I will analyse interview data from six students. The analysis will show that rather than taking responsibility of increasing the numbers of Sámi language users, the students’ investment in Sámi language learning is linked to relations with family, identity and curiosity. Choosing Sámi as second language is thus better understood considering Leonard’s (2017) concept of language reclamation
An early intervention raised knowledge and inspired to increase language stimulating activities
The benefits of early shared reading and interaction with caregivers in supporting children’s early language and literacy skill are well known. Studies show that interventions promoting early shared reading positively affects parents’ attitudes towards reading, as well as children’s home literacy environment and language skills. The Swedish early intervention Språkstart Halland enhances shared reading but also supports early language stimulating activities like descriptive talk, responsive communication and Key Word Signs. The intervention targets children aged 0–3 years. The present study considers intervention points at 6 and 11 months. During home visits at these ages, library staff deliver gift-packs containing books, toys, songs, and rhymes to promote early language stimulation. Parents are encouraged to engage in ‘talk, play, sing, read’ activities to support language development. Interactive demonstrations of language-stimulating strategies are provided. To explore parents’ experiences of the 6- and 11-month visits and develop an understanding of their thoughts regarding the impact of the intervention, fifteen parents were interviewed. Four semi-structured focusgroup interviews were performed, and due to attrition also two single subject interviews. Interviews were carried out at a local library and online. Data was analysed using qualitative content analysis.
Findings show that the intervention changed parents’ mindset and increased their knowledge regarding early language stimulation. Tools and strategies benefitting the parent-child interaction were gained. Motivation to continue performing the activities was generated by a positive experience during the intervention as well as an increased understanding regarding the activities’ supportive effect on children’s further language development. The relationship formed to the library staff was described to be important. Social gains were described from the intervention and the guidance towards library activities. For parents who had previous knowledge, awareness regarding early language stimulation increased. To conclude, parents reported enhanced knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours regarding early language stimulation as a result of the intervention. This suggests a promising contribution to the enrichment of children's home language and literacy environment. Findings are coherent with previous studies and implies usefulness of the intervention in supporting children’s language development
