Exploring food waste reduction efforts in Canada
Across the food supply chain, Canada produces 50 million tonnes of food waste annually of which 60% of wasted food is considered avoidable. At the retail level, 12% of food waste can be avoided by redistribution, which has the potential to address food insecurity. This initiative aligns with actionable areas of the federal Food Policy for Canada. There are two methods used to answer the central research question of the study is to explore, "How does the redistribution of food waste from the retail level to individuals align with the actionable areas of the Food Policy for Canada?” A scoping review is the first method to explore the link between food waste and food security the within Canadian-context research. A comparative public policy analysis is the second method to enhance our understanding of food waste reduction efforts across three Canadian provincial jurisdictions. This study demonstrates the academic and provincial policy gaps in addressing food waste and its relationship to food security. There is a call for more detailed academic reporting to guide future research that focuses on equity-deserving groups in Canada
