Thermal Reduction Synthesis of Antibiotic Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles for Bacterial Detection and Photoactivated Antimicrobial Activity
Given the persistence of waterborne diseases, especially within Indigenous communities throughout Canada, it is paramount that a rapid bacterial detection system be developed. This research study utilized gold nanoparticles, tethered with antibiotics, to create a rapid, colorimetric bacterial detection and antimicrobial activity system. Gold nanoparticles (AuNP) were tagged with penicillin, cephalexin, ciprofloxacin and ethambutol. The antibiotic tagged AuNP were placed in the presence of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and Ultraviolet-Visible spectrophotometer measurements were taken to determine whether a detectable color change occurred. Additionally, antibiotic functionalized AuNP were placed in the presence of bacteria and exposed to either a light-emitting diode, or darkness, for 30 minutes. Samples were then plated to determine the antimicrobial activity of the functionalized AuNP. It was concluded that all versions of AuNP are antimicrobial and exhibit colorimetric bacterial detection properties. Penicillin and ciprofloxacin exhibit the most effective antimicrobial activity
