This thesis focuses on the specific stylings of Ahmad JamaTs trio arranging and performing. This will cover his famous piece “Poinciana” on his 1958 album Ahmad Jamal trio At the Pershing: But Not for Me, and “Wave” from his 1970 album The Awakening to study his trio style. Along with a trio analysis, this will cover an analysis of Jamal’s solo playing and a comparison between his trio and solo techniques and sound. This thesis will also cover comparisons between Ahmad Jamal and those he’s influenced with comparisons between Jamal’s version of “Billy Boy” from Ahmad Jamal At the Pershing Volume Two and Miles Davis’ “Billy Boy” from his album Milestones, Ahmad Jamal’s “Poinciana” compared to Jacky Terrasson’s “The Call” from his album 53, and finally comparing Jamal’s “Wave” to Ramsey Lewis’ “The Spark” off his album Songs from the Heart: Ramsey Plays Ramsey. There will also a biographical section to review Ahmad Jamal’s influences and a short section on other genres he’s influenced
