An Investigation of the Mediating Role of Student Mental Health on COVID-19 Stress and Substance Use

    No full text
Research suggests that as a result of the pandemic, substance use may either decrease due to the closing of on-site consumption locations and financial difficulties or increase as a method of coping with added psychological distress (Rhem et al., 2020). Further, literature suggests that Canadian’s mental health states have deteriorated since the pandemic began (Statistics Canada, 2020a). It is thus possible that COVID-19 stress is associated with poor mental health outcomes, and that university students are using alcohol/cannabis to cope. This study measured COVID-19 related stress, anxiety, depression, alcohol harms and cannabis harms in a sample of first- and second-year university students (n= 1318; % female = 79.4). It was hypothesized that elevated levels of COVID-19 stress would be associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression, which would then be associated with more substance related harms, and that this relationship would be more pronounced in women, given that women are more likely to report symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression than men (Pieh et al., 2020). It was found that both anxiety and depression mediated associations between COVID danger and contamination fears, COVID traumatic stress symptoms and cannabis harms in women only. Depression also mediated relationships between COVID economic fears, COVID xenophobia, and cannabis use in women. Further sex differences in COVID-19 stress, mental health outcomes, and cannabis harm were also identified. Females reported higher levels of danger and contamination fears, economic fears, total COVID stress, anxiety and depression, while males reported more cannabis related harms. These findings suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted student mental health and that students may be using cannabis as a coping mechanism, highlighting the critical importance of prioritizing mental health during public health crises to reduce immediate and long-term harms, specifically relating to substance misuse problems

Critical leadership: Three elementary school principals’ approaches to equity and inclusion for students with exceptionalities

    No full text
This critical qualitative study examines inclusive school leadership and its impact on students with exceptionalities within one school board in Ottawa, Ontario. Three recently retired elementary school principals, who were recognized for their outstanding leadership with students with exceptionalities, were interviewed. The data were collected and analyzed using an inductive comparative analysis strategy. Themes emerged and the findings indicated that early socialization, role models, mentors, and lived experiences of these school principals impacted their approach to leadership and desire to advocate for students with exceptionalities. The research findings led to the development of a critical leadership framework that challenges existing ableist attitudes in schools. The framework centered on five key tenets: surfacing and critically examining values and beliefs; articulating a clear moral leadership purpose; developing core leadership traits of courageous vulnerability, strong work ethic, high expectations for students and reflective practice; and enacting sound leadership practices; and deepening critical consciousness. These school leaders embodied all five tenets of this critical school leadership framework despite the varied attitudinal, institutional, and systemic barriers faced by students with exceptionalities This study recommends that leadership preparation programs include efforts to enhance principals’ awareness of equity and inclusion by developing their social justice literacy, applying humanistic and critical approaches to leadership practices, and examining the institutional structures that currently exist for principal wellness
