An Examination of the Sex-Specific Effects of THC on Sleep Quality in Young Adults
The recent legalization of cannabis in Canada has led to a simultaneous surge in its use in young adult populations. Although there is a lot that is known surrounding cannabis education, there are gaps in the knowledge pertaining to cannabis and its effects on sleep quality for both short-term and long-term users. The young adult population is especially susceptible to the negative consequences of cannabis use, as this period of time is critical for development. Much of the work that has been done thus far on cannabis and sleep is derived from studies with either qualitative or quantitative data, but both are rarely examined within the scope of a study. In turn, results often rely too heavily on the subjective experiences of users, or the aspects of sleep architecture without a personal aspect to the experience. Failure to integrate both qualitative and quantitative approaches has culminated a narrow view on the ways in which cannabis use affects the quality of sleep in young adults. In this study, daily sleep diaries, in conjunction with Fitbit data will seek to understand how cannabis (THC in particular) affects sleep quality in young adults. In specific, the physiological differences in sleep quality will be investigated between men and women after cannabis use. Another area of particular interest is the prevalence of cannabis as a sleep aid. This data will be used as a harm reduction strategy in cannabis education to inform young adults of the risks associated with short-term use

Fitting into the Intersection of Aesthetics and Athletics: The Influence of Sport on Female Athlete Body Image
Athletes who participate in aesthetic sports have been found to be at higher risk for developing negative body image. As a result, the athletes experience adverse effects such as but not limited to decreased participation in sport and disordered eating. The objective of this study was to determine what are the influential themes of cheerleading that influence body image in university athletes. Five participants from the St. Francis Xavier University cheerleading team agreed to participate in one-on-one, semi-structured interviews. Following verbatim transcriptions and a thematic analysis, four key themes emerged: sporting background the stereotype of the cheerleader, comparing to teammates, and coaching. The interviewees predominantly shared positive testimonies of body image while cheerleading at StFX which supports claims that environments that emphasize performance over aesthetics fosters healthier body image beliefs. The research therefore shows that body image is not influenced through one singular aspect of the sport, rather negative attitudes and beliefs about body image are perpetuated through misinformation which open opportunity to intercept this miscommunication and insert positive messaging
