It's Not Just Black and White: The Effect of Race on the Coach-Athlete Relationship in Minority Adolescents
The coach-athlete relationship refers to all interactions between an athlete and their coach, including both coach and athlete’s feelings, thoughts and behaviors. This relationship has the power to influence multiple outcomes in sports. There is a lack of research on race in the coach-athlete relationship, particularly for the minority adolescent population in Canada. This study explores the impact of race on the coach-athlete relationship in minority adolescents. Ten athletes aged 18 to 21 who identified as Black and had experience being coached by coaches of the same and different races participated in online semi-structured interviews (M= 49 minutes) to share their experiences. The interview guide consisted of 17 questions based on the 3+1CCoaching Model created by Sophia Jowett in 2017, and race. Interview transcripts were analyzed through narrative thematic analysis. Six themes were created through the narrative thematic analysis, these included: pressure as a minority athlete, personal versus professional coach-athlete relationships, the power of relatability, the understanding of racial experiences, the importance of family approval and sport as an institution. Following this, four narratives were created from the analysis including the Connection Seeker, Understanding Striver, Family Valuer and Opportunity Aspirant. The Connection Seeker, values a coach they can relate to. The Understanding Striver values a coach who understands the challenges of being a Black athlete. The Family Valuer values their family's relationship with their coach. The Opportunity Aspirant values a coach that can lead them to the elite level. Each narrative demonstrated internal or external influences that impacted the coach-athlete relationship. Internal influences refer to onlythe coach and athlete. External influences refer to extrinsic factors that may influence the coach and athlete, such as one’s family and using sport for business means. These narratives can be used to better understand the impact of race on coach-athlete relationships in minority adolescents in Canada

I'm Not Your Mom: The Gendered Distribution of Emotional Labour in the Community Advisor Role
St. Francis Xavier University (StFX) relies on the employment of undergraduate students as Community Advisors (CA) in university residence buildings. This honours thesis explores how gender influences the distribution of work and responsibilities in the Community Advisor role at St. Francis Xavier University. Specifically, this research investigates how women CAs balance the responsibility of the role with their academic commitments. Drawing on the existing literature on undergraduate residence staff (Cousineau and Chambers 2015; England 1988), this research analyzes the ways in which women Community Advisors are responsible for more emotional labour in their work in residence at StFX. Following data collection, three emergent themes in this work are: women in the CA role feeling as though they are mother figures to students, the degree to which a given CA’s personality impacts the distribution of roles and responsibilities, and the lack of support from both the institution and supervisors. This thesis reflects the implications of the gendered distribution of the CA role on women’s academic performance and personal lives
