Malay identity in the exploration of miniature creation as souvenirs: contextual miniature of Malay architecture of North Sumatra, Indonesia

    Get PDF
As a testament to the past Malay glory, there are monumental architectures in Medan (North Sumatra, Indonesia), Langkat (North Sumatra, Indonesia) and Batubara Regencies (North Sumatra, Indonesia) that have become Malay icons. The city of Medan and several areas in North Sumatra are known as tourist destinations since the early 20th century. The tourism has strong potential but it has not been supported by representative souvenir products. This article discusses the preservation of Malay identity through research into the manufacture of miniatures as souvenirs. The aim is to explore the potential of Malay architectural forms to be explored in the production of miniature souvenirs to revitalize North Sumatra’s Malay identity. The replicated research methods are survey, creation (creative experiment), and conservation methods in the socio-cultural approach. Research data was collected from various sources and analyzed using an interactive model. The results of the study explain that the potential identity of Malay architecture can be mapped based on its type (function) and structure. Its exploratory potential, both technically and aesthetically, lies in the dynamic visualization of roof forms and architectural facades. As it is researched based on the iconic Malay architectural figures, the miniature products are exclusive in the form of unique souvenirs with a strong Malay identity

Communicate to engage: storytelling, content creation, and promoting the idea of sustainability and intercultural dialogue in travel videoblogs

    Get PDF
In the area of digital media narratives, an important communication role is played by influencers who, thanks to original media messages, become creative gatekeepers of specific ideas. Travel videoblogs are often underestimated as pure entertainment, whereas they can be seen as important tools for public discourse creators. The research uses methods of compositional and content analysis, supplemented with narratology and netnography. In the space of popular travel videoblogs, the main ideas promoted include the ideas of sustainable development and intercultural dialogue. Bloggers create and stimulate the existence of online communities, express specific ideas, concepts and worldviews that partly come from the area of scientific discourse, particularly anthropological, cultural and ethical ones. The research highlights the serious public role played by the digital nomads as influencers and new kind of friendly authority and presents case study of successful communication strategies, narrative skills and technical competences of authors. The online travel narratives can be seen as marketing of ideas and thus used as practical tool of communication for institutions, non-governmental organizations and other actors of communication. The paper analyses new material (new genres of communication, new channels, new strategies) and topic of high importance in the context of intercultural conflicts and ecological problems. One of the most influential Polish travel vlogs, Globstory by Kaja Kraska (initiated in August, 2014), serves here as a case study. It was chosen because its content is typical for this genre and because of creative and engaging practices of the vlogger who successfully influences the public and its understanding of specific ideas and problems

An analysis of intrinsic motivators about the effect of social media usage on artistic creativity in university in China

    Get PDF
With the development of the information age, social media has become an important channel for students to communicate, interact and obtain information online. This research combines analyses of social media use and factors linked to intrinsic motivation to examine the influence of these factors on university students’ creativity through the Internet. The discussion presented here starts from the viewpoint that intrinsic motivation plays an important role in the correlation between social media and students’ creativity. This study randomly surveyed 416 students from Chinese universities majoring in art to investigate the impact of social media on their levels of creativity. The analysis focused on understanding these students’ intrinsic motivation to engage in Internet use. The conclusions show that social media has a considerable impact on their creativity. Under the influence of intrinsic motivation, students’ creativity can be considerably boosted. Furthermore, it also shows that different intrinsic motivations have different effects on creativity levels. Therefore, the study is suggested that the education sector in China still needs to pay more attention to the development of students’ creative approaches to achieve better educational outcomes

Alleviating surveyor bias in real estate: An application to vacancy and property prices

    Get PDF
Although vacancies in the real estate market have always been of key interest to both private and public stakeholders, measuring the impact of vacancy rates on property prices is challenging. This study attempts to quantify the extent of the influence of vacancy rates on the price decline of commercial properties. The dataset used in this study was collected and collated by valuation experts. We attempt to alleviate the bias inherent in the price estimates provided by the surveyors. A Bayesian multilevel estimation model was employed, and the results revealed that while some experts do not show deviations from the standard tendency of a peer group, others do diverge from this norm. Based on these findings, a bias-controlling price decline rate was derived. As many real estate statistics are produced based on survey data compiled by experts, the approach adopted in this study is expected to be applied to various real estate practices to mitigate the inherent and inevitable surveyor bias

The incentive effects of project governance elements on agents in agent-led construction of social security housing projects

    Get PDF
The agent-led construction system is a construction mode that emphasizes the introduction of professional management teams instead of government departments to develop public projects in China, including social security housing. In reality, the problem in practice is that the government owners’ management system of the agent market is not sound enough, and it cannot effectively motivate the agents. Existing research has not paid enough attention to this agent construction market. To reveal the effective incentives of agent developers, using the stimulus–organism–response theory, this study constructed a structural equation model and proposed a research hypothesis about the effect of project governance elements on project performance. The study found that governance elements including internal contractual governance, external contractual governance, and relational governance, had a positive incentivizing effect on the project performance. The psychology and behavior of the construction agent played a partial mediating role. The results provide a policy implication for city government to improve the incentive system for agent construction of security housing projects

Subsidence analysis of hydroelectric dam using the Kalman filter – a case study in Hoa Binh hydropower plant, Vietnam

    Get PDF
Hydroelectric dams have a great influence on the safety of the downstream area. Therefore, deformation monitoring for assessing the safety of dam should be carried out regularly. In order to improve efficiency of the dam management, it is necessary to analyse the displacement values in space, over time to assess overally the displacement of dam. In this purpose, an attempt was conducted to analyse the subsidence of hydroelectric dams located in Hoa Binh, Vietnam using one of the most useful method – Kalman filter. Kalman filter is the unique method that can determine influence of external factors (particularly, elevation of water level in the reservoir) on dams, simultaneously forecast the displacement values of dam in the future. Moreover, Kalman filter allows to predict subsidence accurately in about 6 months that is longer prediction time than other static models. These are clearly presented and discussed in the article. The obtained results demonstrate the high applicability of Kalman filter method in analysing and forecasting the subsidence of the Hoa Binh hydroelectric dam

Analyzing new ventures’ innovation generation and adoption: a configurational analysis from the optimal distinctiveness perspective

    Get PDF
The institutional theory literature focuses on the legitimization of new ventures’ innovative behaviors, while the entrepreneurial orientation literature emphasizes differentiation of the pursuit of innovation by new ventures. We apply the optimal distinctiveness perspective to examine how the institutional environment and entrepreneurial orientation jointly influence two modes of innovation – innovation generation and innovation adoption – in new ventures. We employ fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) based on country-level data obtained from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) project. Our findings reveal that there are five equifinal optima of distinctiveness rather than a one-size-fits-all optimal distinctiveness for high innovation generation and high innovation adoption, respectively. Moreover, the orchestrating mechanisms of the two modes of innovation are different: that of innovation generation is threshold orchestration and that of innovation adoption is compensatory orchestration. Furthermore, except for the difference, we also identify something similar shared by mechanisms of innovation generation and innovation adoption. These results extend the optimal distinctiveness theory by empirically verifying equifinality in optimal distinctiveness and articulating different practices of threshold orchestration and compensatory orchestration, and also contribute to the innovation literature by examining the differences and similarities of the mechanisms of innovation generation and innovation adoption

The impact of executive team competency-sharing degree on firm innovation performance

    Get PDF
In China’s high-quality development context, the key role of executive teams in corporate innovation is increasingly prominent. However, effectively utilizing the synergistic effect of competencies within these teams to boost innovation performance remains a crucial research issue. A sample of 2,350 companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen A-shares from 2010 to 2022 was used to examine the impact of the executive team’s capability-sharing degree on firm innovation performance. The study indicates that the degree of managerial competence sharing, entrepreneurial competence sharing, and technological competence sharing within the executive team positively impacts firm innovation performance. These findings remain robust in the face of variations in dependent variable measures, lagged independent variables, and the propensity score matching method. Environmental dynamism is identified as playing a positive moderating role in the relationship between the influence of managerial, entrepreneurial, and technological capability-sharing degrees and firm innovation performance. Further analysis of heterogeneity reveals that the impact of the executive team’s capability-sharing degree on firms’ innovation performance varies based on the nature of property rights, firm size, and industry competitiveness. This study, grounded in top-level ladder theory, offers a framework for enhancing team capabilities and overcoming growth obstacles through executive team competence sharing

Investigating the impact of time allocation on family well-being in China

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyze the relationship between family time allocation patterns and subjective well-being of Chinese married women. Using the fixed-effect ordered logit model and data from CFPS 2014–2018, this study empirically explores the impact mechanism and heterogeneity of family time allocation patterns on married women’s well-being. The results indicate that the mode of working full-time and handling the majority of housework is an impact negatively for women, and this result is robust. Further heterogeneity analysis reveals that market work has a weaker impact on low-educated women’s well-being than housework, but this is reversed for high-educated women. In particular, the single-time poverty brought on by housework specifically reduces women’s well-being, more than that of dual-time poverty of work time and housework time. Also, the happiness efficiency resulting from women reducing housework time will increase with the rise in happiness levels. Accordingly, this paper highlights three policy implications: enhancing happiness effectiveness, optimizing family time allocation patterns, and raising women’s status. The conclusion clarifies the path to gender equality in family labor division and provides new recommendations for relevant nations on how to promote the equalized gender division of labor and enhance the standard of living for women
