Using RS and AI GIS in land management and urban planning in Mosul, Iraq for sustainable development
The importance of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) comes from the fact that they are means that have been proven effective in supporting and developing the decision-making process in the field of urban control. The city of Mosul in Iraq has been subjected to a tremendous change in the dynamics of land use due to the wars. This study aims to use RS techniques and Artificial Intelligence Geographic Information Systems (AI GIS), as the study relies on Sentinel-2 images and online data sources to evaluate the changes that occurred in the natural environment by comparing the years during and after the destruction. Four classification methods were used in this study; Support Vector Machine (SVM) learning, Scene Classification technique (SC), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI). High classifications accuracies were obtained ranging between (92%–97%). The residential area had decreased, followed by vegetation, which was converted to bare land by 64% in the year 2017 due to the war effect. In 2023 some recovery of settlement and increasing in other sectors was observed. The approach highlights the capability of spatial technologies and the role of RS and GIS in sustainable development
BIM-based digital twin for the management of a railway station
Building Information Modelling (BIM) has positioned as one of the main project methodologies into the AECO (Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations) sector. However, its implementation entails important barriers such as hardware and software requirements or BIM skills and education. The main aim of this research was to overcome those implementation barriers providing full accessibility to BIM benefits, especially in the infrastructure management phase leading to a digital twin (DT) of the built environment. Furthermore, the paper shows the technical aspects of the implementation of BIM information as well as the external functionalities, i.e., real time information or data queries, which are commonly define in BIM-IoT topic rather than BIM-FM interoperability. The research is based on the project for the northern covering and new building of the Bidebieta-Basauri passenger station, located on the Bilbao-Orduña commuter line in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, Spain. The final result is a BIM-based online web platform with Full access to the BIM model of the infrastructure, linked with other functionalities based on technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Bigdata or Cloud Computing
Barriers and facilitators of promoting work-related injury insurance in the construction industry: lessons from China
Work-related injury insurance (WRII) is essential for protecting workers’ rights and enhancing workplace safety, yet its promotion in construction faces challenges. This study investigates WRII adoption barriers and facilitators in China’s construction sector using a mixed-methods approach. Semi-structured interviews with 14 industry experts were conducted, followed by thematic analysis to identify key barriers. An analytic hierarchy process was then applied to prioritize these barriers. The findings reveal six main barriers: (1) cumbersome claim process, (2) incomplete law and regulation system, (3) weak right-protection awareness of construction workers, (4) weak legal consciousness of contractors, (5) unreasonable compensation treatment and fund management, and (6) difficulties in employment relationship identification. To address these challenges, the study proposes five targeted measures: (1) simplifying the claim process, (2) promulgating authoritative and detailed laws and regulations, (3) strengthening supervision and law enforcement, (4) strengthening advocacy, and (5) improving insurance compensation and fund management. These findings offer practical guidance for policymakers to enhance WRII effectiveness in China’s construction industry and provide insights applicable to other developing countries. Despite limitations related to expert judgment and sector focus, the study offers valuable recommendations for future research on cross-industry comparisons and digital solutions for WRII
Spatial pattern and its driving forces analysis of soil available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in semi-arid grassland surface coal mining areas
Mining activities not only provide a large amount of material basis for socio-economic development but also cause great damage to the environment. It is of great significance to study the spatial variation characteristics of soil Available Nitrogen (AN), Available Phosphorus (AP), and Available potassium (AK) in mining areas for land reclamation and ecological protection. Currently, research on soil AN, AP, and AK in mining areas is lacking in large-scale survey, sampling, spatial pattern, and driving force research for surface coal mines in semi-arid grassland areas, and it is not possible to comprehensively grasp the distribution characteristics and driving forces of soil AN, AP, and AK in surface coal mines. Given this, this study took the Shengli Coal Field in Xilinhot City, the hinterland of Xilingol Grassland, as an example to study the spatial pattern and driving forces of soil AN, AP, and AK in the semi-arid grassland surface coal mining areas. The results showed that: (1) There was no strong spatial correlation among AN, AP, and AK in the soil of the study area, and the spatial pattern heterogeneity was strong. The content of AN, AP, and AK in southeast soil was relatively low. (2) The influence degree of each factor on the spatial pattern of AN was ranked as follows: NDVI > Agriculture > Water > Town > Mining > Industry; (3) The influence degree of each factor on the spatial pattern of soil AP was ranked as follows: NDVI > Mining > Water > Industry > Town > Agriculture; (4) The influence degree of each factor on the spatial pattern of soil AK was ranked as follows: NDVI > Town > Agriculture > Water > Mining > Industry; (5) The interaction between two factors presented two relationships: nonlinear enhancement and dual-factor enhancement. The interaction between various factors was higher than that of a single factor
Modeling soil retention, erosion potential, and sedimentation risk using the InVEST SDR model
This study conducts an examination of the Ilam watershed, utilizing the InVEST and SDR models to assess soil retention, erosion, and transport. It incorporates factors like rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility, DEM, land use, vegetation, and conservation practices to explore the complex interplay between ecosystem services (ES) and disservices. The study found that the average soil retention in the watershed is 94.5 tons/ha/year, the average erosion potential is 62.8 tons/ha/year, and the average sediment transport is 10.5 tons/ha/year. Forest areas retain a significant portion of sediment (60%) with low discharge (13%), while agricultural and urban regions contribute more to erosion. This highlights the importance of integrating ES into land management strategies to mitigate environmental degradation. The study highlights the crucial role of ES in maintaining ecological balance and supporting human well-being. It advocates for innovative policies and customized solutions to mitigate land use impacts on soil conservation and sediment retention, thereby fostering awareness among managers and decision-makers for more sustainable land use planning
Deflection analysis of composite reinforced concrete elements
This article examines the deflections of layered reinforced concrete bending elements, which are influenced by interlayer slip. Also, the study shows the work stages of such elements and methods for calculating their deflections. The experimental part analyzes composite reinforced concrete beam stiffness, depending on the shape of reinforcement lattice girders. Based on analytical deflection calculation methods, the deflections of tested beams under various loads are found. The obtained analytical results are compared with experimental data. After analyzing the discrepancies, an analytical method for calculating the deflection of double-layer reinforced concrete elements is developed using regression analysis. The proposed calculation method is applied to both the author’s own and other researchers’ experimental specimens, and a comparison of experimental and analytical results is carried out.

Sluoksniuotųjų gelžbetoninių elementų su erdviniu tinkleliu įlinkio tyrimai

Straipsnyje nagrinėjami sluoksniuotųjų lenkiamų gelžbetoninių elementų įlinkiai, kurie priklausomi nuo sluoksnių prasislinkimo. Taip pat analizuojami sluoksniuotųjų gelžbetoninių elementų darbo etapai ir jų įlinkių skaičiavimo metodai. Eksperimentinėje dalyje tiriama dvisluoksnio gelžbetoninio elemento erdvinio tinklelio pavidalo įtaka konstrukcijos standumui. Pasirėmus analitiniais įlinkio skaičiavimo metodais, apskaičiuojami išbandytų sijų įlinkiai esant skirtingoms apkrovoms. Gauti analitiniai duomenys palyginami su eksperimentiniais rezultatais. Išanalizavus skirtumus, kuriamas analitinis dvisluoksnių lenkiamų gelžbetoninių elementų įlinkio skaičiavimo metodas, atliekant regresinę analizę. Skaičiavimo metodas pritaikomas asmeniniams ir kitų autorių eksperimentinių tyrimų bandiniams ir atliekamas eksperimentinių ir analitinių rezultatų palyginimas.

Construction development and prospects in Lithuania: a review
The paper examines the development and current state of the Lithuanian construction sector, focusing on the impact of legal, economic, and technological factors. The aim of the research is to evaluate the dynamics of sectoral growth and to identify possible future changes in line with national priorities and European Union regulations. The applied methods include legal analysis, statistical data review, and comparative analysis. The results revealed key challenges such as workforce shortages, rising costs, and uneven levels of digitalization. The paper presents proposals to promote sustainability, competitiveness, and innovation in the construction sector in the near future and summarizes the Lithuanian construction sector challenge.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama Lietuvos statybos sektoriaus raida ir dabartinė būklė, daugiausia dėmesio skiriant teisinių, ekonominių ir technologinių veiksnių poveikiui. Tyrimo tikslas – pagilinti statybos sektoriaus raidos suvokimą, įvertinant jo augimo dinamiką ir nustatant galimus būsimus pokyčius, atsižvelgiant į nacionalinius prioritetus ir Europos Sąjungos reglamentus. Tyrime taikyti metodai apima teisinę analizę, statistinių duomenų apžvalgą ir lyginamąją analizę. Rezultatai atskleidė pagrindinius sektoriaus iššūkius: darbo jėgos trūkumas, didėjančios išlaidos ir netolygus skaitmeninimo lygis. Straipsnyje pateikiamos rekomendacijos, kaip artimiausiu metu skatinti statybų sektoriaus tvarumą, konkurencingumą ir inovacijas, taip pat apibendrinami pagrindiniai Lietuvos statybų sektoriaus iššūkiai.

Specific features of social development of territorial communities in Ukraine under martial law
The article presents the results from a study on the social development of specific communities in the Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions of Ukraine under martial law. The purpose of the article is to present the results from an analysis of the current state of social protection for residents in territorial communities across the Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions. The object of the article is the system of providing social services to citizens by municipal social institutions at the local level. The main provisions of the article are based on a survey of more than two hundred experienced employees of social institutions and facilities. It is shown that despite the military operations, local self-government bodies manage to fulfil the social obligations that the state has to its citizens. The article describes the main problems in the implementation of social policy at the local level: the devastating impact of war, professional burnout of specialists due to staff shortages and an increase in the volume of responsibilities, and an increase in the number of those who can apply for social assistance. It is proved that in the near future, the problems of protecting orphans, families in difficult life circumstances, and military personnel who will be dismissed from the Defence Forces of Ukraine will become more acute
Assessment of service quality of wholesale construction and finishing materials sales companies: case of Lithuania
Customer service is one of the main factors influencing the success of a company’s operations, as it directly determines customer satisfaction, loyalty and the company’s image. High-quality service encourages customers to return and strengthens long-term cooperation. This article analyses customer service principles and their significance, and service quality assessment methods that identify problem areas and ensure high service standards. The main criteria for assessing service quality are discussed, such as employee professionalism, speed of service, clear and polite communication, understanding customer needs and problem-solving effectiveness. The importance of feedback in improving service quality is emphasised, and customer satisfaction measurement methods are discussed, including surveys, feedback analysis and service quality methodologies. The article also underlines that continuous assessment of service quality and customer service improvement is essential to achieving long-term business growth, customer loyalty and competitive advantage. Therefore, this article aims to determine how customers assess the quality of service of wholesale construction and finishing materials sales companies, i.e., their expectations and the actual situation. A systematic analysis of scientific literature and the SERVQUAL method is used to achieve this goal. The results obtained show that companies in this sector, due to the specifics of their activities, pay little attention to meeting customer expectations. However, they still have to assess and consider customer expectations to achieve a high-quality service standard. This is the only way to adapt to market changes and ensure long-term success more effectively
A boundary value problem with an integral condition for a certain fractional differential equation
The aim of this work is to prove the existence and the uniqueness of the solution of one dimensional initial boundary value problem for a parabolic equation with a Caputo time fractional differential operator supplemented by periodic nonlocal boundary condition and integral condition. First, an a priori estimate is established for the associated problem. Secondly, the density of the operator range generated by the considered problem is proved by using the functional analysis method
