The 15-minute city model, a visionary approach to urban planning, envisions neighbourhoods where residents can access all essential daily needs – work, education, healthcare, shopping, and leisure –within a 15-minute walk or bike ride. This study assesses the challenges and opportunities of implementing the 15-minute city model in Downtown Cairo, Egypt. The study examines the current state of public spaces, transportation, and walkability in the area through ethnographic research, including extensive field observations and frequent attendance at design workshops with developers, as well as numerous site visits and in-depth semi-structured interviews with diverse stakeholders. Stakeholders included the developer of the Cairo House project, the Cairo Bike project manager, urban researchers, tourists, residents and business owners within the study area. Data were analysed using thematic coding to identify recurring patterns and conflicting perspectives. The findings reveal significant challenges, including traffic congestion, limited public spaces, and inadequate pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. The study explores potential solutions, including enhancing public transportation, creating safe and accessible environments for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting mixed-use development, and developing vibrant and accessible public spaces. The main findings underscore the significance of community engagement and participatory planning in ensuring the successful and equitable implementation of the 15-minute city model within this unique and historic urban context

    Get PDF
The public sector has made significant innovations in its contemporary operations. Beyond digitisation, enhancing the processes involving public servants is necessary to provide effective service to citizens. This study examines the connection between internal marketing strategies and job satisfaction among public sector employees in Romania. Through quantitative analysis and a questionnaire-based approach, the research explores various internal marketing dimensions such as communication, training, rewards, and empowerment. Using robust statistical methods, particularly partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM), the study explores the complex relationships between these dimensions and job satisfaction. Aligned with the principles of new public management (NPM), this research pioneers the investigation of internal marketing in the public sector. The findings reveal nuanced dynamics, demonstrating that while internal communication indirectly influences job satisfaction by empowering employees, training has a direct impact. Additionally, fair reward systems directly contribute to satisfaction, while empowerment emerges as a significant standalone factor. The study emphasises the importance of strategic programme design in communication, training and rewards, recognizing empowerment as a key driver of job satisfaction among public sector employees

    Get PDF
This study employs Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to evaluate the efficiency of the top 20 smart cities in converting Research and Development (R&D) investments into desired outcomes. Using national R&D expenditure (2015–2022) as input and ten criteria from the IMD 2024 Smart City Index report as outputs, the analysis reveals varying levels of efficiency among leading smart cities. Seven cities achieved perfect efficiency scores, while others, including some high-ranking cities, showed unexpected inefficiencies. This study provides valuable insights into resource utilization and identifies specific areas for improvement across structural and technological dimensions. The limitations include the focus on top-performing cities and the use of national R&D data as a proxy for city-specific investments. The findings of this study offer a foundation for policymakers and urban planners to optimize resource allocation and improve smart city initiatives, contributing to the ongoing development of sustainable urban environments in the face of technological advancements and urban challenges

With the rapid advancement of digitization, the duty of the digital economic climate in advertising regional economic growth is ending up being progressively noticeable. Nonetheless, there is relatively little research study on how the digital economic situation specifically impacts regional environment-friendly and high-quality financial growth (RGED). This study utilizes provincial panel data from 2013 to 2020 in China to empirically assess the effect of the digital economic environment and validates its effect with a fixed impacts model. The study has produced four unique and important findings for: firstly, the effect of the digital economic climate on RGED exhibits nonlinear qualities; Second of all, RGED is significantly influenced by the “∩ - formed” effect of the advancement of the digital economic situation and the degree of industrial digitization; Finally, the influence of digital framework and digital industrialization on RGED exhibits a considerable “U-shaped” pattern; Fourth, the digital economic situation indirectly advertises the growth of RGED by enhancing human funding and updating commercial structure. These conclusions offer beneficial plan support for relevant financial entities to achieve RGED. First published online 05 June 202

The role of education and digitalization in tourism development: evidence for the European Union

    Get PDF
The investigation of the relationship between tourism, digitalization, education, and economic growth is increasingly significant in the context of sustainable development and technological transformation. This study examines the long run and short run impacts of digitalization (measured through internet usage and broadband subscriptions), education (reflected in tertiary enrollment and public expenditure), and macroeconomic factors (including GDP per capita, employment in services, and urbanization) on international tourism performance, as indicated by arrivals and receipts across clusters of European Union countries. Methodologically, the study adopts a two-stage approach. Hierarchical cluster analysis is first applied to classify European Union countries according to key tourism characteristics, followed by the estimation of panel ARDL models for each resulting cluster to examine both long-run equilibrium relationships and short-run dynamics. Employing panel ARDL models applied to four distinct groups of countries, the analysis highlights differentiated dynamics, strong long-run effects in high-income tourism economies and more pronounced short-run responsiveness in structurally varied countries. Cointegration tests affirm the existence of long-run relationships in most clusters, reinforcing the validity of an error correction framework. Therefore, the empirical findings indicate that digitalization exerts a consistently positive influence on tourism performance in the long-run, while the effects of education are more heterogeneous across clusters. In the short-run, the impact of macroeconomic variables and digital infrastructure is more pronounced, underscoring the relevance of structural and contextual factors in shaping tourism dynamics. The findings emphasize the importance of aligning digital and educational policies with tourism development strategies while considering the structural differences among regions. This research provides a comparative framework that enhances the understanding of tourism as both an economic and social phenomenon

    Get PDF
Purpose – is to provide evidence of how social networks act as an indispensable channel in the cryptocurrency phenomenon and its public perception, analysing the context in which it occurs, as well as the patterns followed and the most commonly used channels. Research methodology – this article explores and provides evidence on the relationship between cryptocurrencies and social networks through the use of digital social listening tools, exploring data retrieved from the most prominent social networks, as well as websites, forums and blogs. Findings – the urgent need to provide an adequate level of financial education in the digital economy.  Research limitations – the study should be carried out by age segments to assess whether it is only a problem of the younger population, which are the habitual users of social networks.  Practical implications – the cryptocurrency user or investor is aware of the existing risks associated with cryptocurrencies, especially among the young population, without underestimating the influence that social networks have had and continue to have on the perception and acceptance of digital currencies, and even on their popularity. Originality/Value – investing in cryptocurrencies requires social responsibility on the part of institutions, demanding adequate legislation and financial training for potential investors

Dreaming, insomnia, and choreographic creativity of young female dancers: a cross-sectional preliminary study

    Get PDF
Human creative activities have been postulated to be related to insomnia and dreaming during sleep. The current preliminary cross-sectional study investigated the associations between insomnia, dreaming, and creativity of choreography in young female dancers. Forty-six female contemporary dancers were included in the present online study and divided into two groups, creative choreographic dancers and non-choreographers, according to their experienced professional roles. The frequency and contents of dreams and nightmares were collected from the participants. In the choreographer group, the frequency of nightmares was significantly correlated with sleep duration and quality among Athens insomnia scale variables. Choreographers also exhibited a significant correlation between the frequency of nightmares and positive thinking tendencies. The non-choreographer group similarly revealed a significant correlation between the frequency of nightmares and Athens insomnia scale variables. The present results suggest that creativity in dance choreography is related to dream frequency, although it is less associated with dream content. Nightmare is less associated with subjective insomnia in creative choreographic dancers than in non-creative dancers, implying the involvement of neuro-psychological mechanisms related to the resilience process. Future research should explore the characteristics of creativity and regular sleep quality and could benefit from including external physiological measures to evaluate sleep propensities

The impact of liquidity constraints on the effectiveness of fiscal policy: evidence from Poland

    Get PDF
The aim of the paper is to estimate the impact of the rapid worsening of households’ access to credit in Poland on the effects of fiscal policy. The novelty of our study is that it extends the analysis of liquidity constrained households’ impact on fiscal multipliers to Central and Eastern European country, where households access to credit is relatively limited and therefore the potential impact of liquidity constrained households on fiscal multipliers is stronger than the existing literature for highly developed economies indicates. The empirical analysis is based on the theoretical model with heterogenous households. We found that the increase in the percentage of liquidity constrained households led to the substantial rise in fiscal multipliers, and thus the increase of effectiveness of Polish fiscal policy. The study indicates that before the worsening of households’ access to loans, the contemporaneous government spending multiplier was relatively low, whereas after a sharp increase in interest rates, contemporaneous government multiplier exceeded one. What is more, our study shows that a sharp increase in interest rates also strengthens medium term fiscal policy impact on GDP in Central and Eastern European economy.
