    No full text
221 p. : ill.

Removal of Amoxicillin From Wastewater Onto Activated Carbon: Optimization of Analytical Parameters by Response Surface Methodology

    No full text
Antibiotics are widely used in veterinary and human medicine, but these compounds, when released into the aquatic environment, present potential risks to living organisms. In the present study, the activated carbon (AC) used for their removals is characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, BET analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to determine the physicochemical characteristics. Response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken statistical design (BBD) were used to optimize important parameters including pH (2-12), temperature (20-45°C), and AC dose (0.05-0.20 g). The experimental data were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and fitted to second-order polynomial using multiple regression analysis. The optimal conditions for maximum elimination of Amoxicillin (Amox) are (Dose: 0.124 g, pH 5.03 and 45°C) by applying the desirability function (df). A confirmation experiment was carried out to evaluate the accuracy of the optimization model and maximum removal efficiency (R = 89.999%) was obtained under the optimized conditions. Several error analysis equations were used to measure goodness of fit. Pareto analysis suggests the importance of the relative order of factors: pH > Temperature > AC dose in optimized situations. The equilibrium adsorption data of Amox on Activated Carbone were analyzed by Freundlich, Elovich, Temkin and Langmuir models. The latter gave the best correlation with qmax capacities of 142.85 mg/g (R2 = 0.999) at 25°C is removed from solution. The adsorption process is dominated by chemisorption and the kinetic model obeys a pseudo-second order model (R2 = 0.999)

Wideband Endfire Antenna Array for 5G mmWave Mobile Terminals

    No full text
In this paper, a compact endfire antenna array with low-profile, small clearance, and wideband operation is proposed for millimeter-wave (mmWave) fifth-generation (5G) mobile terminals. The wideband operation is achieved by exciting two identical bow-tie dipoles inserted on both sides of a multilayer substrate fed by an asymmetric open-end stripline to slotline transition. The antenna performance is significantly improved by introducing a set of vertical metallic vias. The proposed antenna element can achieve 29 % from 24.2 GHz to 32.4 GHz with a peak realized gain that varies from 3.5 dBi to 4.5 dBi. A linear 4-element antenna array is arranged and fabricated to verify the proposed antenna beamforming capabilities. The simulated and measured bandwidth achieves a wide range of 34.4 % (24-34 GHz) to support 26, 28, and 30 GHz 5G mmWave bands with an isolation level better than 20 dB and a peak realized gain over the interested bands ranging from 7.56 to 8.14 dBi. The simulated array scanning angle is ± 68° at 28 GHz within 3-dB gain deterioration. Furthermore, the simulated spherical coverage has met the requirements of 3GPP standards which make the proposed antenna array a promising candidate to be integrated within mmWave 5G mobile device

Hybrid whale optimization algorithm with simulated annealing for the UAV placement problem

    No full text
This chapter suggests a hybrid algorithm based on the combination of whale optimization algorithm (WOA) with simulated annealing (SA), called WOA-SA, for solving the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) placement problem. WOA-SA combines WOA’s global search functionality with SA’s local search functionality. The main objective of our work is to determine the optimal position of the UAV in order to maximize the total throughput, depending on a given set of user locations and traffic demands. The WOA-SA algorithm is validated in terms of the total throughput using 18 distinct instances with various numbers of users, taking into account the effect of the distribution of user positions. The results of simulation using Matlab demonstrated that the WOA-SA algorithm obtains better results than WOA, SA, Particle Swam Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Bat Algorithm (BA)

    No full text
74 p . : ill.

Geological context and thermo-economic study of an indirect heat ORC geothermal power plant for the northeast region of Algeria

    No full text
This article presents a study of the electricity generation potential using ORC systems of the most important geothermal sites in northeastern Algeria, combining geological, thermodynamic and economic analysis. The results highlight that geothermal electricity is technically feasible with the selected indirect heat ORC geothermal plant. Such production can present an interesting economic profitability when considering the international electricity price. The best economic performance was obtained for the geothermal site of Meskhoutine leading to a depreciated payback period of 10.8 years. The electricity production cost was evaluated at 0.21$/kWh for an electricity production capacity of 498 kW. Such performance is completely breakdown when considering Algerian subsidised electricity prices. These subsidies must be revised. Otherwise, it will harm the profitability of renewable energy systems, limit their development, and constrain seriously the Algerian energy transition road map. In addition, this study highlights that the selected indirect ORC configuration presents an important internal auxiliary consumption, especially for the Air Condenser (AC) unit, and was not suitable for geothermal temperatures below 117 °C. Other configurations, especially hybridisation and combined heating and power production are prioritized for future investigation

Synthesis and functionalization of carbon nanospheres from asphaltene fraction for crude oil upgrading and viscosity reduction

    No full text
Nanoparticles provide a promising, cost-effective eco-friendly solution to the challenges posed by heavy-oil reservoirs, significantly enhancing oil recovery rates by reducing viscosity without requiring extensive thermal inputs. In this study, carbon nanospheres (CNSs) and functionalized-CNSs nanofluids were prepared by incorporating surfactants (T80 or BMIMCl). These nanofluids were evaluated for their efficacy in upgrading crude oil, particularly focusing on viscosity-reduction. Rheological tests were conducted across varying shear rates (60–300 s−1) and concentrations (0.02–3 wt.%) to comprehensively assess the impact of these additives on the crude oil’s proprieties. The results showed a notable enhancement in crude oil viscosity reduction, with the following order observed: CNS-TiO2 < CNS-TiO2/DMIMCl < CNS-TiO2/T80, yielding reduction rates of 95%, 95.83%, and 97.08%, respectively, at an optimal dosage of 2.75 wt.% and a shear rate of 300 s−1. The surface functionalization of CNS particles and their crystallinity are the main mechanisms driving the reduction in oil viscosity. Moreover, the properties of the crude oil were investigated upon the utilization of CNS-TiO2/T80 nanofluid. It was found that this nanofluid led to a substantial reduction in sulfur content by 78.32% and a significant decrease in the percentage of heavier molecules, ranging from C12 to C35 and up to C36, with 47.76% and 97.98%, respectively

Robustness Enhancement of Fractionalized Order Proportional Integral Controller for Speed Control of Indirect Field-Oriented Control Induction Motor

    No full text
This article presents a novel approach for controlling an induction motor (IM) drive using a fractionalized order proportional integral (FrOPI) controller within an indirect field-oriented control (IFOC) scheme. In contrast to the conventional Integer Order PI controllers (IOPI), the FrOPI controllers demonstrate enhanced performance owing to their nonlinear characteristics and the inherent iso-damping property of fractional-order operators. The performance of the induction motor is thoroughly assessed under various conditions, including starting, running, speed reversal, and sudden changes in load torque. Simulation results are then presented to confirm the effectiveness of the induction motor drive when utilizing the FrOPI controlle
