The article describes a forgotten work of Daniel Naborowski – “De temperamentis disputatio medica” (1593). Naborowski was a poet who lived at the turn of the 17th century and the work considered here is the result of his medical studies in Switzerland. The article addresses the poet’s scholarly interests, but first and foremost, it focuses on the subject of the research – the theory of temperaments. With ancient lineage and extremely popular in the sixteenth century, the theory was most frequently presented in the contexts of physiognomy, astrology and the lesions that were conditioned by the theory, yet in Naborowski’s work, it gained a new, solely theoretical perspec-tive. It was also concerned with the meticulous consideration of the systematics of temperaments (e.g. their differentiation – one was moderate and eight were merged, as well as their detailed division). The style of these considerations is characteristic for medical works of that period, and they constitute an interesting example of how practical issues in 16th and 17th century medicine were systematized. Furthermore, Naborowski’s considerations are a vivid example of permeable nature of disciplines – philosophy and medicine, and medicine with the broadly understood field of the humanities

This paper focuses on the influence of the semiotic organization of the digital message on the creation of aesthetic meanings in digital art. It presents  modifications in the sphere of text presen-tation and focuses on functions that it play in creation of literary meanings. Moving, sound created, changing shape and color texture is the place of creation of meanings as well as the inter- action of the semantic of the texture and the semantic of words. New digital tools, e.g. program-ming, the interface are important part of new semiotic code that shapes literature (e.g. linking facilitates the creation of new forms of plots, the interface is a part of literary discourse, the cursor is both the medium of meanings and the tool of text working). The paper concludes that digital technologies redefine the ontology of the literary text and art discourse

Sposoby ukazywania obozów nazistowskich w sztuce zwanej naiwną

The paper presents the realizations of the theme of concentration camps in folk art, i.e. the sculptures made by Władysław Chajec, Zygmunt Skrętowicz, Franciszek Skocz, and Jan Staszak. Chajec and Staszak tried to present the most drastic moments in the history of the Nazi death factories. These sculptors drew inspiration from the popular iconography of the Holocaust, i.e. pictures showing the liberation of the camps. Skocz carved a cycle of figures that represent members of the SS and prisoners who are doing labor and who are being subjected to punishment, whereas Staszak decided to create his works by using wood from the trees growing on the borders of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, thus treating these plants as witnesses of suffering. This article presents the aforementioned works against the background of the crisis of representation, which permeates culture after the Holocaust. The paper presents the realizations of the theme of concentration camps in folk art, i.e. the sculptures made by Władysław Chajec, Zygmunt Skrętowicz, Franciszek Skocz, and Jan Staszak. Skandal na kampusie. Dietrich Schwanitz czyta teorię systemów Niklasa Luhmanna

Niklas Luhmann (1927–1998) is one of the most distinguished sociologists of the twentieth cen-tury and the author of systems theory, which to a great extent has been accommodated into lin-guistics. Dietrich Schwanitz (1940–2004), an anglicist, is one of the most interesting interpreters of Luhmann on the basis of literary studies. Schwanitz is also known as a writer and author of the novel Campus (Der Campus, 1995). The main character, a sociologist, Hanno Hackmann, is wrongly accused of the sexual harassment and rape of a student. His reckless romance is exploited by various people in the university milieu to achieve their own goals. In fact, these people are, however, only the representatives of various social systems, especially politics and the media. Striving for re-election, the university rector needs this matter for his campaign, and the media are only interested in a scandalous story to be exploited for some time. Social communication does not reflect reality, and, at the same time, can be described as based on the “reduction of complexi-ty” (“Komplexitätsreduktion”). This is one of the most important concepts in Niklas Luhmann’s work. It turns out that systems theory provides the specific key to interpret the novel
