Śląsk nieoczywisty – literacki obraz górnośląskiego krajobrazu w Kajś. Opowieści o Górnym Śląsku Zbigniewa Rokity
The article is dedicated to an analysis of the Upper Silesian landscape, which becomes, for the author of Kajś. Opowieść o Górnym Śląsku, one of the elements that shaped his – previously lost – Silesian identity. Zbigniew Rokita’s mission, which he undertakes in his reportage, is to ‘disenchant’ the stereotypical image of industrial Silesia. The primary aim of this article is therefore to show how the reporter builds his narrative in order to achieve his goal. The analysis focuses primarily on those places on the map of Upper Silesia that Rokita uses to build the titular unobvious image of the region. These are: Hałda Szarlota, the image of which is constructed in opposition to St. Anne’s Mountain, Bytom as a symbol of Polish colonialism in Silesia, and Camp Zgoda as one of Upper Silesia’s ‘non-places of memory’. The article also discusses the role of the media’s exclusive focus on the industrial part of Upper Silesia, while completely ignoring its agricultural, and incidentally older, part
Kosmobraz jako narracja. Przypadek space docs koncernu BBC
The article deals with the variability and dynamics of spacescapes understood as narratives encoded in cosmic views. Starting from the definition formulated by Alice Gorman, the author analyses three BBC series devoted to the exploration of the Solar System: The Planets (1999), Wonders of the Solar System (2010) and The Planets (2019), proving that spacescapes appear in all of them, but their roles differ. In The Planets from 1999, we encounter a narrative of technological sublimity; in Wonders of the Solar System – an Arcadian tale; and in the 2019 series – a narrative of terraforming other worlds. In the first part of the article, the author discusses selected issues of practices of space-making and studying cosmic landscapes. Then, using the example of three series produced by the BBC, she shows the dominant narratives embedded in the cosmogenic images present in contemporary high-budget space docs. Importantly, the narratives of technological sublimity, terraforming and Arcadianism are not mutually exclusive, but are closely related. In their evolution, they seem to follow the direction set by Gorman’s definition: while The Planets from 1999 primarily emphasise the ‘terrestrial’ elements of the vertical landscape, Wonders of the Solar System emphasise orbital shots in the style of The Blue Marble, and The Planets from 2019 show us places that have so far only been visited by unmanned space probes
Pejzaże melancholii. Intelektualne podróże W.G. Sebalda i Andrzeja Stasiuka w perspektywie postkolonialnej
This article presents a comparative analysis of two intellectual journeys: The Rings of Saturn: An English Pilgrimage by W.G. Sebald and On the Road to Babadag by Andrzej Stasiuk. The starting point for this discussion is Emil Cioran’s philosophy of history, which situates Sebald’s and Stasiuk’s works within the context of postcolonial and postmemory narratives. The analysis of memory mechanisms takes into account the role of photography in both texts, drawing on Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida and his concept of punctum as a theoretical framework. The author of the article interprets these works as contemporary realizations of the Romantic wandering, characterized by melancholy and the aestheticization of reality. In Sebald’s and Stasiuk’s prose the experience of landscape is not merely aesthetic but also leads to epiphanies of the past. Based on Pierre Nora’s theory of lieux de mémoire, the article examines how, in both authors’ perspectives, landscape becomes a reflection of their respective visions of history and social concepts

Karykatura jugosłowiańskiej rzeczywistości – Nowe szaty cesarza Ante Babai
This article aims to analyze The Emperor’s New Clothes (1961), the first feature movie by Ante Babaja. The director employed his vivid literary imagination to retell the classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. Babaja’s theoretical self-awareness, his deep understanding of the very process of adapting literature, enabled him to create a layered allegory of Yugoslavia under the rule of Josip Broz-Tito.This article aims to analyze The Emperor’s New Clothes (1961), the first feature movie by Ante Babaja. O nieznanych kulisach „Życia Chopina” (w świetle korespondencji Ka- zimierza Wierzyńskiego)
The article recalls the history of Kazimierz Wierzyński’s friendship with conductor Artur Rodziński, who inspired the poet to write a biography of Chopin, addressed to foreign readers, for the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death, which fell in 1949. Based on archival correspondence, it shows the meanders of Wierzyński’s discussions with Jerzy Giedroyc about publishing excerpts in the Parisian “Kultura”; it poses the question of the real authorship of the translation of the book’s text into English, as the translator seems to have been Ludwik Krzyżanowski and not Norbert Guterman; it proves that the author of the preface to the biography was in fact Wierzyński himself, and not Artur Rubinstein. The article recalls the history of Kazimierz Wierzyński’s friendship with conductor Artur Rodziński, who inspired the poet to write a biography of Chopin, addressed to foreign readers, for the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death, which fell in 1949.
