Nieistniejący mur? Problemy z opisem Muranowa
Get PDFThe article presents the problem of recovering the memory of the Warsaw district of Muranów, the site of the WW2 ghetto in recent literature. Referring to one of the first works devoted to this subject (Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz’s Umschlagplatz), the author reveals subsequent changes in the treatment Jacek Leociak, Beata Chomątowska and Elżbieta Janicka’s of the issue in their books. Indicating the oscillation between remembrance and forgetting about the ghetto, the authors adopt different perspectives to touch upon the ambiguous presence of the area\u27s former inhabitants in the consciousness of today’s Varsovians. Their ways of focusing attention on this question may be termed a commemorative perspective, focused on the psychology of space and critical discourse. Though signaling the problem differently, the authors are united in emphasising the problems related to the Polish memory of the Warsaw ghetto

Get PDFThe aim of this article is to discuss Mirosław Loba’s book titled Wokół narracyjnego zwrotu. Szkice krytyczne [Around the Narrative Turn: Critical Essays]. The book is a reconstruction of the main trends in contemporary French thought on narrative (the psychoanalytic approach and Paul Ricoeur’s concept are particularly emphasized). Loba’s theoretical perspective is complemented by analytical attempts – the researcher interprets Andrea Camilleri’s and Donna Leon’s criminal novels and he also proposes one of the most interesting Polish interpretations of Jonathan Little’s The Kindly Ones.The aim of this article is to discuss Mirosław Loba’s book titled Wokół narracyjnego zwrotu. Get PDFIn this article I try to interpret the music aspect of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s famous movie The Double Life of Véronique (1991, music: Z. Preisner). The director, whose works are full of allusions to music and generally to art, always paid special attention to the sound of his movies. The Double Life of Véronique, though not the last “fruit” of the cooperation between Kieslowski and Zbigniew Preisner, is the best illustration of this fact. The musical elements permeate almost all aspects of this work, from the plot to the structure of the movie (the use of the leitmotif technique), and correspond closely to the action. The key importance of music is illustrated by a description of what I consider to be the film’s three most significant scenes: two from the “Polish” and one from the “French” part of this work

Get PDFThis article is devoted to the concept of an artifact, as derived from older methodological knowledge (J. Białostocki and E. Panofsky), which has been broadened to include new indicators, such as changes of the virtual era as well as the categories of experience and reflections on narration. By reconstructing the phenomenon of artifacts, the author refers to the category of ‘reality’ accordingto Heidegger and W. Toporow as well as the ideas of a ‘sign’ and ‘theme’, and Polish artistic practice (T. Kantor and Z. Herbert). “Formalituri te salutant!” 100 lat formalizmu rosyjskiego (1913– 2013)
Get PDFThis paper focuses on reconstructing the history of the so-called Russian Formalism and the avantgarde context of OPOYAZ’s inception in Petersburg in 1914. Victor Shklovsky’s lecture-manifesto titled “The resurrection of the word”, which he presented in the café “Brodyacha Sobaka” (“The Stray Dog”) in Petersburg, marked the symbolic beginning of this movement. The anniversary of the foundation of the Russian Formal School as well as the international congress commemorating this anniversary, which was organized in Moscow in 2013 (titled “The 100th Anniversary of Russian Formalism: 1913–2013”) provide a starting point for discussing the legacy and topicality of the Russian Formalism in contemporary literary studies.This paper focuses on reconstructing the history of the so-called Russian Formalism and the avantgarde context of OPOYAZ’s inception in Petersburg in 1914. Get PDFThe 1990s saw significant political changes in countries like South African or Northern Ireland. Prior to the revolutionary transformation, the structure of those societies was marked by a rigid bipolar configuration. However, after the political watersheds, what could be observed in the public domain was a turn towards reconciliation. Regardless of its traumatic character, the past was to yield to ‘prospect for the future’. It quickly transpired, however, that the key to deconstruct- ing the walls dividing the societies lay nowhere else but in the past. And it was the local literary field where a discussion on the weight of remembering what has seemingly come to an end was initiated. This paper tries to illustrate that debate by a comparative analysis of two novels represen- tative of the respective cultural contexts: Playing in the Light (2006) by Z. Wicomb and Where They Were Missed (2006) by L. Caldwell
