In comics, similar to theatre or film, props play a crucial role in storytelling. However, in the comic medium, the function of a prop as a meaningful element takes on a distinct character. Cartoons not only depict objects but also give them specific significance through artistic representation. The article aims to explore this phenomenon by examining the graphic novel The Book Tour by Andi Watson. The analysis draws upon the insights of renowned comics scholars but also refers to broader conceptual frameworks.  Thus additional links to theoretical proposals on the semiotics of visual representations and semiotics of the stage. Throughout the discussion, the paper presents artistic techniques used by Andi Watson that contribute to the unique nature and the way of functioning of comic props. In comics, similar to theatre or film, props play a crucial role in storytelling. The study deals with the subject of a specific type of crisis i.e. trauma in translation of literary texts. The field of Trauma Studies seems to have a huge research potential if juxtaposed with the discipline of Translation Studies. Many contemporary novels can be analysed from the perspective of traumatic experiences and their representation in works of fiction with special focus on the psychological aspect. Translation process has to make allowances for the hybridity of trauma fiction to recreate it in the target text. The analysis of the rendition of Kosmos by Witold Gombrowicz and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad (works being apt illustrations of the inescapable interfaces of trauma) illustrate the triplicity of mediation of trauma which has to be considered during the translation process: 1. the performative recreation of the original traumatic event, 2. literary texts as inherently traumatic due to the inescapable entry into the symbolic order of linguistic codes, 3. the double bind of the translation process i.e. the trauma of the impossibility of translation. The study deals with the subject of a specific type of crisis i.e. trauma in translation of literary texts. Homoerotyzm a homoestetyka w dziełach literackich Ołesia Ulianenki

The article is devoted to the literary heritage of Oles Ulianenko, who was virtually the only national author addressing LGBTQIA+ subject matter. The corporal-mimetic method was applied to analyze fiction works, which enabled us to draw a number of meaningful conclusions. On the one hand, LGBTQIA+ themes are typologically represented by a variety of images which are characterized by both an ironic dimension and dramatic pathos, interpreted not in ethical but in aesthetic terms. On the other hand, Oles Ulianenko was the first to shift homosexuality into the visible realm, and to represent the “splendors and miseries” (H. de Balzac) of homoeroticism to Ukrainian society; who, with his sexualized, homosexualized and lesbian narrative of his literary works attempted to speak of a future when his country would overcome the lack of social and sexual freedom. The article is devoted to the literary heritage of Oles Ulianenko, who was virtually the only national author addressing LGBTQIA+ subject matter. The article presents the performance Kronos, directed by Krzysztof Garbaczewski in 2013. The performance was an immediate reaction to the extremely intimate work of art written by Witold Gombrowicz. Garbaczewski is involved in reading and staging Gombrowicz’s work since 2008. The article highlights how the creative method presented in Kronos is portrayed by actors during the performance. Moreover, the author shows the phenomenon of poetry epiphany in the play, the coexistence of corporeality and the mind, the processes of tabooisation of the body and mediatization in the play. The author points to common points in the works of Gombrowicz and Garbaczewski. She also draws attention to how the writer’s authority is invoked, a process through which the director legitimises the theatrical exploration. The article presents the performance Kronos, directed by Krzysztof Garbaczewski in 2013. Tone Pretnar, in the translation of Jan Nepomucen Kamiński’s sonnets, created the illusion of the original by using his own poetic talent and a foreign word. Just as Kamiński used the word of Mickiewicz, so he used the word of Prešeren. However, he changed the communication purpose of the original text. Apart from the pastiche aspect, he gave the original a high poetic value, while revealing the aporia of the original’s autonomy.Tone Pretnar, in the translation of Jan Nepomucen Kamiński’s sonnets, created the illusion of the original by using his own poetic talent and a foreign word. „Ciało wiersza” – corpus (alter) ego poety – artefaktualizacja tekstu. Psyche lirycznej persony Eugeniusza Tkaczyszyna-Dyckiego

    Get PDF
The article is an analysis of Ciało wiersza [The Body of the Poem], a poetic volume by Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki, in the light of psychoanalysis, somatopoetics and philosophy of the body. The author juxtaposes the category of the “body of the poem” with Jean-Luc Nancy’s Corpus. In this context he presents Ciało wiersza as a collection of texts describing the situation of a subject embodying the content of its psyche, transgressing and being on the verge of mental entropy or schizophrenia. Close to Freud’s cathartic method, Tkaczyszyn-Dycki treats the poem as a reservoir of psychogenic material and a projection instrument. The somatext, as embodied unconsciousness, analyzed through the prism of basic Freudian tools (defense mechanisms, regressive shifts), appears as a resultant of the dialectic of repression and the imperative of commemoration, which channels libidinal energy through imaginative displacements. Referring to the recurring leitmotifs of Tkaczyszyn-Dycki’s imagination in Ciało wiersza, the author traces how the poet reflects in the poetic text the workings of the psychic apparatus and the “multiple names” of schizophrenia. The article is an analysis of Ciało wiersza [The Body of the Poem], a poetic volume by Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki, in the light of psychoanalysis, somatopoetics and philosophy of the body. Nie tylko biurko i pióro – rekwizyty w filmach biograficznych o życiu Jane Austen

The following text begins with an introduction that discusses (relevant for the subsequent argument) issues related to biotopic and the role of props in the context of the discussed films. The subsequent part of the argument focuses on the significance of props (such as a desk, a quill, a letter, and a book) in Becoming Jane (2007, dir. Julian Jarrold) and Miss Austen Regrets (2008, dir. Jeremy Lovering). The analysis explores the situation where these objects convey specific information encrypted by the directors, while also allowing for viewer interpretations regarding their functions. The text argues that although it is not possible to present the “truth” about the writer’s life, one can still attempt to know and understand her world, and the props depicted in the films play a significant role in this process. The following text begins with an introduction that discusses (relevant for the subsequent argument) issues related to biotopic and the role of props in the context of the discussed films. Barbie, the doll-symbol, the pop culture icon and significant prop on the artistic, political, social and business scenes, has been arousing emotions in subsequent generations for several decades. It is worth noting, however, that today Barbie is no longer just a passive instrument illustrating desired ideas, but has become a factor creating reality independent of her creators. In the present discussion, the author focuses on the interpretation of the phenomenon of Barbie perceived as an object and a thing in the sense of the Italian philosopher Remo Bodei. The article attempts to trace the transformation of the image of the Barbie doll from its creation to modern times, when its popularity peaked thanks to the excellent marketing strategy accompanying the distribution of Greta Gerwing’s 2023 film Barbie.Barbie, the doll-symbol, the pop culture icon and significant prop on the artistic, political, social and business scenes, has been arousing emotions in subsequent generations for several decades.
